1 Information Sheet How to Become an Driving Instructor This document provides a guideline for applicants wishing to provide professional driving tuition on behalf of Safer Driving School in NSW and ACT. In order to become an Driving Instructor you must hold an Instructor Licence and undertake an application and interview process. The Instructor Licence is provided by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) and requires the applicant to complete a series of documents, checks and tests. The application process will differ according to whether applicants are a licenced or unlicenced Driving Instructor. Licenced Driving Instructors Licenced Driving Instructors must apply for positions online, undertake an interview process and attend the Drivers Instructor Induction. Licenced Driving Instructors are not required to submit a Letter of Eligibility, undertake the Instructor Training course or complete the Impart Knowledge Test. Please note that licenced Driving Instructors, at the discretion of, may be required to undertake additional training in order to meet Safer Driving School quality standards. Procedure for becoming an Driving Instructor The following procedure outlines the application process to obtain a Driving Instructor Licence and to become an Driving Instructor. 1. Letter of Eligibility If you do not have an existing Driving Instructor License you must obtain a Letter of Eligibility from the RTA. You can not apply for an Driving Instructor position if you do not hold a current Letter of Eligibility. 1

2 The Letter of Eligibility is provided by the RTA and requires all applicants to complete a series of documents, checks and tests. Information regarding the Letter of Eligibility can be found on the RTA website: 2. Online Process Once you obtain the Letter of Eligibility please apply online for Driving Instructor positions. The online Form enables candidates to attach their resume and indicate whether they are either a licenced or unlicenced Driving Instructor. Please find below the online Form on the Careers Website: 3. Interview Process will contact all applicants who apply online for Driving Instructor roles. If you have the requisite skills and experience you may be contacted to undertake an interview with Safer Driving School management. A second interview may also take place with the Franchise Driving School. As part of the interview process you will also be required to undertake a practical driving assessment and complete a Working with Children Check. The Working with Children Check is a legislative requirement. 4. Instructor Training Course To become a licenced Driving Instructor you must undertake an Instructor Training Course and pass Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics with an approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO). This is a legislative requirement for anyone wishing to become a licenced Driving Instructor. A list of Approved RTO s that provide the Driving Instructor course can be found by visiting the website The Driving Instructor course is offered to all applicants who successfully complete the interview process. The course cost with the approved RTO provider is approximately $3,000 and includes a combination of theory and practical assessments. Flexible repayment options of qualification costs may be offered to successful candidates under certain conditions. The course is full-time and is held over a two-week period. 2

3 5. Impart Knowledge Test After successful completion of Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics you are required to complete a practical Impart Knowledge Test, conducted by the RTA. During the test you are required to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and driving behaviours expected of a professional Driving Instructor. After passing the Impart Knowledge Test and paying the RTA licence fee, you will be issued with a Driving Instructor licence, which is valid for 5 years. 6. Induction All applicants will be required to undertake a formal Induction with. The Induction course will differ depending on whether the applicant is a licenced or unlicenced Driving Instructor. Licenced Driving Instructors will attend a three-day induction course held by the. Unlicenced Driving Instructors will undertake a formal Induction, which is included as part of the Instructor Training Course. 3

4 Process for Unlicenced Driving Instructors Applicants must hold a Letter of Eligibility from RTA taken on line If NO vacancy is available in your area, Resume will be held on file until a position becomes available received by HR department Not Unsuccessful Not 1 st Interview with Safer Driving School including a practical driving evaluation Working with Children Check commenced Unsuccessful Applicant will be Safer Driving School Franchisee Not 2 nd Interview with Franchisee & representative References and background checks Successful Applicant to complete Instructor Training course, Impart 4 knowledge Test and induction
