1 Instructions for Importing & Publishing Questions from Respondus to Canvas Respondus (Windows, only) can be used to transfer questions or surveys in text, richtext or MS Word format to Canvas. Respondus allows you to import multiple-choice, true-false, paragraph, short answer, matching, and multiple response questions from a file that can be published into ELMS. 1. Before you get started, make sure the file must be stored in one of the following formats: plain text (.txt), rich-text (.rtf), MS Word (.doc and.docx), tab/comma delimited (.csv) format. 2. Make sure the questions in the plain text, rich-text, or MS Word file is organized in a "Standard Format" required by Respondus. Watch this demo to see how to format questions 3. Make sure you are running the latest version of Respondus (go to Help>Check for Update to see if a more current version is available). Or you can download the current version of Respondus via Prepare Your Questions for Importing The first thing you will need to do is to prepare a file containing the questions you want to import. Instructions for doing this and then importing them into Respondus are available in Respondus Help. Follow the steps below to locate them: 1. Open Respondus. 2. Make sure the Current Personality is set to Instructure Canvas. Copyright Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland 1

2 3. Click the Import Questions button; then click the Help button. This will take you to the Importing Questions instructions. Here, you will see a complete set of instructions for Importing Questions. Questions will need to be formatted using the Respondus simple "standard format." You can access the standard format instructions by clicking on the Standard Format link. Scroll through the page to locate the question format you need (e.g., multiple-choice, true/false, etc). We suggest printing this page as a reference. Importing Questions 1. Once you have prepared your questions, click Import questions via Start tab to import questions from a text file. 2. The Importing Question window opens. Select the type of file that will be imported. The "Standard Format" for organizing questions is the same for Plain Text (.txt), Rich Text (.rtf) files, and Microsoft Word (.doc and.docx) files. Click the Preview button to preview the file being imported and to see if there are any warning messages. Copyright Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland 2

3 After the questions have imported, you will see them listed at the bottom on the screen. You will be in the Edit mode (the Edit tab is selected). You can edit Questions in Respondus (optional). If you wish to edit your questions, you may read about the available Edit features under Help > Help Topics (under Contents tab) > Editing a File. Yet, if you are satisfied with your questions, you may skip directly to the Previewing and Publishing step. Publish Exam/Quiz/Survey Questions to Canvas When you are ready to publish your questions to Canvas, follow the steps below: 1. Select the Preview & Publish tab along the top. 4 2. Select the Publish to Canvas tab on the left. 3. Click the Publish Wizard button. The Publish Wizard window appears. 4. Next, you will need to set-up the Canvas Connection (You only have to do this one time per computer!). From Canvas Server drop box menu, choose Add a new server. Then select Yes, check for preconfigured server settings. Click Next. Copyright Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland 4

5 5. In the Preconfigured Sever Settings Wizard box (below): Next to item 1. Enter a name for the connection (that s up to you). Next to item 2. Enter your login information. Under item 3. Select Run connection test. Click Next, and the connection test will begin. Once the connection is successful, click Finish. Next time when you use Respondus, just select the Canvas server name you entered and it will be connected automatically. Now, you are ready to use the Publish Wizard to publish your quiz to Canvas. Click Next to go through the different options for publishing to Canvas. 6. You are able to choose your destination Canvas course space and the exact location to publish the quiz. 6 7. Click Next and Respondus will start to publish the exam and settings. You will know that the publish process is complete when the hourglass disappears and the phrase "Completed successfully" appears in the "status" window. Once the process has completed, click the Finish button. 8. The exam, quiz, survey, or question bank is now in your Canvas course space.
