2 Getting started Back to Top 1. To begin, go to and select the icon for Downloadables. 2. From the main Downloadable Books screen, choose OMNI Libraries. 2

3 Searching for an ebook online Back to Top 1. From the main OMNI Libraries screen, choose Advanced Search. 2. Select format Kindle Book from the drop menu. To search within titles currently available for lending, check the box labeled Only show titles with copies available. 3

4 3. Once you ve found a title, double check that it is Kindle Book format and add to cart. 4. If you are done browsing, click Proceed to Checkout. 4

5 5. If you are not already logged in, a screen will prompt you for you to select your library and enter your library card number. Your PIN will be the last 4 digits of the barcode on your library card. 6. On the check out screen, double check again that your selection is a Kindle Book and click Confirm Check Out. *You have a choice among a 7 day, 14 day, or 21 day lending period, select the time frame you wish to keep the ebook and remember; after that time, the ebook will be automatically returned and inaccessible from your device. 7. Next you will begin the download process. 5

6 Downloading an ebook Back to Top 1. Select Get for Kindle. 2. You will be taken to amazon.com. Click on Get library book. 6

7 3. If you are not signed in to your Amazon account, it will now prompt you to do so. If you are already signed into your Amazon account, skip ahead a couple steps. 4. You are now given a choice on which device you would like this transferred to. If you want it transferred to your Kindle, make sure your Kindle s name is selected and click on Continue. 7

8 5. If your Kindle is automatically connected to a wireless network (WiFi), you should be able to see your book on your Kindle. However, if you are not connected, you will get a message like the one below. Don t panic we just need to do a few extra steps to transfer it onto your Kindle. Click on Download now to continue. 6. You will get a pop-up window. Select Save File. 8

9 7. The book should download. If you are using Firefox, there should be a popup downloads window, as shown below. 8. Keeping that popup window open, plug in your Kindle to your computer using its USB connector. A new window should pop up, which is your Kindle drive. Open up the drive. You should see a list of four folders. Open up the documents folder. 9. Minimize any open windows except for the download box and the Kindle documents window. Move the two windows so you can see both contents (see below). Click and 9

10 drag the downloaded book in the downloads window and drop it in the Kindle documents window. 10. The book should be now in your Kindle documents folder and viewable on your Kindle Returning an ebook early Back to Top 1. Go to amazon.com and sign in. Click on Your Digital Items which is located in the upper right side of the screen. 10

11 2. Select Manage your Kindle. 3. You should see the book you checked out. Click on the Actions button to the right and select Return this book. Once you click it, please be patient, it may take a few seconds to successfully return it. Once it is returned, you can select Actions again and Delete from library. This will remove the file. 11

12 FAQ s Back to Top Will I be notified before my public library book loan expires? Yes. Three days before the end of the loan period, we will send a courtesy reminder about the loan expiration. Once the loan period has ended, an additional notification will be sent. Availability of books and length of loan are determined by your local library. What Kindle devices can I read public library books on? You can read borrowed Kindle books on any generation Kindle device or all free Kindle apps, as well as in your web browser with Kindle Cloud Reader. Public library books require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection. If you are trying to send a library book to a Kindle device and you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you can load your library book via USB instead. Due to publisher restrictions, some titles may not be wirelessly delivered to your device and instead require USB transfer from your computer to your device. These restricted titles also may not be accessed on Kindle reading applications. How do I send library books to my Kindle device or reading app? Once a public library book has been redeemed, you can send it to any registered Kindle device or reading app from the Manage Your Kindle page. Public library books require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Library books will NOT be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection. If trying to send to a Kindle device and do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you may instead choose to load your library book via USB. 12

13 Due to publisher restrictions, some titles may not be wirelessly delivered to your device and instead require USB transfer from your computer to your device. These restricted titles also may not be accessed on Kindle reading applications. For more information, and to learn about transferring files to your Kindle, please visit the Kindle Help page at: Placing a hold on an ebook Digital copies of books work similar to that of books in the physical library. If someone else currently has the book checked out, then it is unavailable at that time. When you click place a hold you will be prompted to enter your address and you will be placed in queue for the hold just as you would if you were placing a hold at the library. When the title becomes available, you will be notified via and will have about three days to come in to the website to checkout your hold. How can I only see ebooks that I can check out today? When conducting a search, check the box at the bottom of the search fields that says Only show titles with copies available. This will ensure that you only receive search results for ebooks that can me immediately checked out.
