7 NATURE Total area: km² - seventh largest in Europe Boundary with Sweden, Norway and Russia Mostly lowland; 70% covered with forest, 19% with lakes lakes, isles Europe s largest archipelago; south-western Turku and Ahvenanmaa (Åland) Arctic fells and wild areas in Lapland ( reindeer)

8 CLIMATE In summer time the temperature quite often rises to +20 Celsius and occasionally goes over to +30 in southern and eastern parts of Finland. In winter, temperatures of -20 Celsius are not uncommon in many areas. In southern Finland the sun does not set for about 73 days in summer, in winter the sun remains below the horizon for 51 days. Finland has four distinctive seasons, which are clearly reflected in the Finnish rhythm of life.
