Erasmus Report Falun/Sweden Carmen Baumgartner SS
Sweden in general You always hear people saying that Sweden is a very expensive country. That isn t completely true. Groceries are about the same price than in Austria. The things that are more expensive are Alcohol and a place to live. About the second you can t get around, as you need somewhere to sleep. If you try to travel around see some parts of the country while your stay I would say that you need about 800 /month. For your stay in Sweden it isn t necessary to speak Swedish, as nearly everybody in Sweden speaks English as well. Even though I can recommend the Swedish course at the Högskolan Dalarna as you will not only learn simple grammar and vocabulary but also get to know more about the Swedish culture and customs. Falun Falun is a small town in the region of Dalarna. I completed my term as an Erasmus student at the Högskolan Dalarna, which I would like to present more precisely later on. Falun is a nice little town which look very Swedish, with all its red houses, a river running through the whole town and surrounded by many forests. If you like to live in big crowded cities you should probably think about Gothenburg or Stockholm. I really enjoyed my stay there as you can get everywhere by walking or (if you lucky enough) by bike. There are many lakes and small rivers in and around Falun which gives you the feeling that you life in the middle of the nature. Furthermore Falun has an old copper mine, which counts as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The colour for all the typical Swedish red houses comes also from the mine in Falun. Another thing what Falun is famous for 1
are the ski-jumping hills, where the 2015 ski world championships will take place. You will definitely not miss the ski-jumping hill, as it is located directly next to the campus of the Högskolan Dalarna. At the end of February 2014 we were lucky enough to see a FIS-Worldcup in Falun and we were supporting the Austrian eagles. You can also talk a walk up to the top of the ski-jumping hill from where you have a great view over Falun. ski-jumping hill main square centre with river lake next to residence copper mine (outside) copper mine (inside) 2
The famous landmark of the region Dalarna is the red Dalahäst, which you can find in nearly every town/city. Over the last few years it became more like a symbol for Sweden. Traditionally it is a handmade red wooden horse which gets colourfully painted. The original factory of those horses is in Nusnäs which is about 1 hour away from Falun. It is definitely worth a visit. Dalahäst in Falun Biggest wooden Dalahäst in Mora 100% handmade horses waiting to get painted 3
The accommodation I stayed in the student residence in Britsen. It s a big house with about 190 rooms for students. It also has four study rooms which you can book for free to have study groups in there. On the weekend those study rooms are mostly used for parties. As most of the Erasmus students stay in Britsen I would recommend that you try to get a room there. All 8 corridors have been renovated within the last few years, so it is quiet new and really nice. The sad thing is, that there is only one corridor left with a common kitchen (if you like to cook together try to get into G-up ). All the other rooms have their own kitchen. You also have free internet access, but you have to bring your own router/network cable to get it work. Furthermore there are three big laundry rooms with two washing machines and dryers each, which you can use for free five times a month. Britsen also has a sauna free of charge and a gym for 600SEK (~65 ) for six months. I payed 3319SEK/month (~360 ). my room my room - kitchen There are also some other places to stay in Fallun during your Erasmus time. Nearly all the apartments and houses belong to Kopparstaden. There is one really close to Britsen called Bojsenburg. There you normally share an apartment with two other students. You have your own room, but kitchen/bathroom is shared. The students you share the apartment with 4
don t necessarily have to be Erasmus students as well. So it can be a good way of meeting Swedish students. 5
Högskolan Dalarna My courses The Campus of the Högskolan Dalarna is divided into the neighbour citys Falun and Borlänge. You have the possibility to take courses in both places. I only took courses at the Högskolan in Falun. The campus in Falun is located in the Lugnet area, which you can t miss as the ski jumping hills are there as well. It takes about minutes to get to the university by walking. But I would suggest that you walk up to the university a few days before the start as you can get lost easily in all the small strets. There are about 2300 students at the Högskolan in Falun, but there are also about distance students who study online. The campus in Falun is not that big, but it offers a lot. In spring 2014 the new library opened. It is a beautiful, friendly and big library with literature for all you courses. It also has a lot of English literature which is perfect for the Erasmus students. There are many small and bigger studyrooms where you can study in groups, but there are also many really comfortable chairs all around the library. the library the library 6
I had four courses at the Högskolan Dalarna and all of them were held in English and nearly all the participants were Erasmus-Students. The Swedish Education System: I m really happy that I picked this course as it was really interesting for me as a future teacher. We got to know the Swedish School System and within the seminars we compared the school system of all the participants (German, Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian and Austrian). Furthermore we had the opportunity to visit a Swedish school for 10 days. I was in a primary school (4 th grade). Even though the lessons were in Swedish I could follow the teacher and I could see how children are taught in Sweden. At the end of the whole course we had to hand in an essay (about 10 pages) about a topic of our choice in the field of Education. Within the essay we had to make a comparison between Sweden and Austria. Outdoor Education in Science: This seminar had practical and theoretical parts. In the theoretical part we had to read some articles and books, which were discussed in the lecture then. And in the practical part we spent a lot of time outside the university, where we did some experiments. It was quite interesting and I got a lot of ideas how to teach outside. For our grade we had to hand in an essay about a topic which is related to Outdoor Education. Swedish I/ Swedish II I picked those two courses because I wanted to learn Swedish during my stay in Falun. The course was held in English mostly as it was too hard for beginners to understand only Swedish. Now, after this course I know basic vocabulary, grammar and I can have a simple conversation. Furthermore the teacher told us a lot about Swedish traditions and culture. For our grade we had an oral and a written exam in both of the seminars. 7
Travel around Sweden It is not necessary to have a car in Sweden, although there is a place in Falun, where you can rent cars (rent-a-wreck.se). If you would like to go to Stockholm, you can get the train from Falun and you ll be in Stockholm in about 2-3 hours (sj.se). You can get cheap tickets if you book your tickets about 2 weeks in advance. Kiruna/Lappland I made a weekend trip to Kiruna, which is the most northern city of Sweden. During the winter time it can get really cold up there (-30 C). If you are lucky enough you ll see the Northern Lights. In and around Kiruna there are many guided tours where you can ride a dog sledge or a snow mobile over a frozen river. I spent 2 days in a camp in the middle of nowhere. In this cam we had no running water and no hearing. That means, that we had to chop wood for the fire and carry up the water from the river, so we had something to drink. We were a group of 14 people in this camp, and I can say that it was a great experience and I would always do it again. hole for the water the camp 8
chopping wood the sledge to the camp Uppsala Uppsala is a nice city close to Stockholm. It has a big university and in the summer time there are some festivals with a lot of students. It is definitely worth to visit Uppsala Nusnäs / Rättvik As I mentioned before, you can find the factory of the wooden horses in Nusnäs. The best way to get there is by car, as the buses don t stop there that often. And if you are driving to Nusnäs already, you should make a stop in Rättvik. It is located at a big lake called Siljan. Furthermore Rättvik is home to the longest pier in Scandinavia. It is really nice to watch the sunset there. pier in Rättvik pier in Rättvik 9
Conclusion It takes some bravery to take the big step and go abroad for one term but at the end you will always be a winner. You gain a lot experiences during your Erasmus stay. You can meet new people and see some wonderful places. Mark Twain once said: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn t do, than by the things you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Finally I would like to say, that everybody who has the opportunity to be part of the Erasmus programme should definitely take that chance as you won t regret it. 10
