3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY - CANADA As the current secretariat for ISTMA Americas Region I am very pleased to report on the increased membership of Argentina & Brazil in 2012 and the participation of Brazil with data into our survey for the very first time. As participation grows we can look forward to an increased awareness of business conditions by all four of the major tooling producing countries within the Americas continent. Business conditions for the 35 Canadian Tooling & Machining Association member companies that reported to this survey covering 1,877 employees are at extremely good trading levels. As 14 % reported fair trading conditions which in itself is good and all other members reported better conditions, thus making 100 % of the reporting companies doing very well indeed. Going forward the outlook is a little more negative for the next period with a decline in future work on the Order books from over 11 weeks down to under 9 weeks. A recent 2 decline in housing starts here in Canada is a concern for the general economy; however, with a 37% increase in housing starts within the USA this year and as they are our largest trading partner it should help to mitigate any future decline for Canadian manufacturing. Sincerely, Les Payne Executive Director Canadian Tooling & Machining Association EXECUTIVE SUMMARY USA Business conditions during the last six months of the year remained the same for the majority of NTMA member companies compared to the previous reporting period. U.S. manufacturers continue to feel that business conditions will remain the same or improve slightly over the next 6 months. Of our reporting companies, 7 reported current business conditions as good, very good, or excellent for the last half of 2012 a downward trend from 76% for the first half of 2012 and 74% from the same period a year prior. 87% of survey respondents projected business conditions will either remain the same or improve during the first half of this year, with only 4% optimistic about a substantial increase in business. The remaining 13% project a moderate to substantial decrease in the coming months. Quoting, Shipping, Order,, and have all remained the same or decreased slightly over the prior quarter. however, increased 1 during that period. 4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BRAZIL PORTUGUESE VERSION A adesão do Brasil como membro da ISTMA é um marco histórico e orgulho para nós ferramenteiros. O horizonte que se abre com a rede de relacionamentos, as oportunidades de negócios e o entendimento das relações de mercado internacional é importante para a consolidação do setor brasileiro. E a participação na pesquisa, pela primeira vez, denota pontos cruciais para medir a temperatura dos negócios. Enquanto tivemos um crescimento do indicador do nível de emprego de 8% no Canadá e 10,3% nos EUA no último semestre, esse número foi de -2,7% no Brasil. No fator condições atuais de negócios na faixa de excelente e muito boas, os números foram de 37% para o Canadá, 3 para os EUA e para o Brasil. Por outro lado, identifica-se um descompasso de entendimento da realidade uma vez que 6 responderam como bos a condição de negócios e 4 como péssima. Já para a perspective de negócios nos próximos 6 meses, 8 assinalaram crescimento moderado, indicando confiança na recuperação. A participação de um número maior de empresas na próxima pesquisa nos dará ainda mais credibilidade e representatividade nos dados e informações. Conto com isso. Estes dados nos permitem trabalhar as estratégias macro para o setor, com intervenção junto aos órgãos públicos e entidades privadas para melhoria das condições de negócios. ISTMA membership opens the window to networking, business opportunities and understanding international market relationships which is important for the consolidation of the Brazilian sector. Brazil s participation for the first time in the ISTMA survey shows very important points that make it possible to evaluate business conditions. While there was an increase of employment of 8% in Canada and 10.3% in the USA in the last six months, Brazil showed a market decrease of 2.7%. In "current business conditions," the range of excellent and very good answers was 37% for Canada, 3 for the United States, and for Brazil. On the other hand, it is possible to identify a mismatch of understanding of market reality since 6 indicated good business condition and 4 answered poor. For the business perspective in the next 6 months, 8 indicated "moderate increase," showing trust in the recovery. The participation of a larger number of companies in the next survey will give us even more credibility and representation in the results. I hope so. These data allow us to work the macro strategies for the sector, with intervention at public authorities and private entities to improve business conditions.
