Introduction First Impressions: Wow Your Portuguese Friends! Portuguese English Vocabulary Phrase Usage 3 Grammar Points 3 Cultural Insight 4

Portuguese Oi. Meu nome é. Oi. Meu nome é. Prazer em conhecê-la. Prazer em conhecê-lo. English Hi. My name is. Hi. My name is. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Vocabulary Portuguese English Class oi hello, hi interjection meu my, mine possessive nome name noun prazer pleasure noun em in, on, at preposition Vocabulary Sample Sentences Oi Dona Rita! Oi Andréia! Este é meu carro. Meu amigo. Meu amigo é americano. Esses são meus sapatos. Meu nome é Ricardo. Meu nome é Carol. "Hi, Miss Rita!" "Hello, Andréia!" "This is my car." "my friend" "My friend is American." "Those are my shoes." "My name is Ricardo." "My name is Carol."

Seu nome é...? Qual seu nome? O nome oficial é Os Estados Unidos da América. Meu nome é Ricardo. Meu nome é Carol. Prazer em te conhecer. Foi um grande prazer. Eu sou Sarah Jones. Prazer em conhecê-lo. Eu sou João Ferreira. Prazer em conhecê-la. Ele está em casa. Como se diz computer em português? Prazer em conhecê-lo. Eu sou João Ferreira. Prazer em conhecê-la. "I am Sarah Jones. Nice to meet you." "I am John Ferreira. Nice to meet you." "He is at home." "How do you say 'computer' in Portuguese?" "Nice to meet you." / "Pleasure to meet you." "I am John Ferreira. Nice to meet you." Vocabulary Phrase Usage 3 In our Vocabulary and Phrases section, we'll talk about the phrase Prazer em conhecê-lo, which means "Nice to meet you." We use this phrase in the exact same way and situations as the English version: when you first meet someone. Grammar Points What's Going On? The grammar point is often the focus of each lesson. Most lessons build upon each other, and understanding the structure of a language is one of the fastest ways to acquire a language. We don't just throw grammar terms at you, and tell you to write sentences. We take a practical approach to explaining the grammar, and we use normal English to explain how the grammar works and how to use it. Our goal is for you to learn Brazilian Portuguese in a fun and easy way. There is no impression like the first. In today's lesson, we'll work on leaving a first impression that will last. Our dialogue for this lesson takes place in São Paulo. The Focus of This Lesson is the Phrase Prazer em conhecê-lo(la). Prazer em conhecê-lo(la) "Nice to meet you."

In Portuguese, "Nice to meet you." is Prazer em conhecê-lo. Portuguese is gender-aware, which means that certain words may change depending on the gender of the individuals involved. In this case, the -la or -lo at the end of the sentence is what changes. says Prazer em conhecê-la to because is a female and -la indicates femininity. says Prazer em conhecê-lo to because is male and -lo indicates masculinity. The rest of the grammar in this phrase is surprisingly complex and quite beyond an introductory lesson. We'll explain more about this in great detail in later lessons. The Site On our site, you can find bonus audio tracks, lesson notes, grammar resources, our voice-recording tool, and a wonderful Portuguese learning community. Brazilians are very community oriented, so a great first step to learning to interact with Brazilians is to participate in the online community. Plus, we're in there every day. 4 To see the key phrases on your ipod, click the center button, or if you're using an iphone, tap the album art. Come by PortuguesePod101.com and sign up for a free Lifetime account! Be sure to pick up the Lesson Notes for this lesson, and you can even take a tour of our website! Cultural Insight Difficult Pronunciation is a Two-Way Street Lastly, we have the cultural insight section where we explain living in Brazil, interacting with the culture, simple ways to avoid misunderstandings, and tips on using Portuguese that you won't find in any textbook. Understanding Brazilian culture is very important because there's much more to communication in Portuguese than just the words. Vocal tone, facial expressions, word choice, and even grammar itself are often governed by culture. English pronunciation is very difficult for most Brazilians. Derek Tucker is a common name in

English, but few Brazilians have been able to say this name correctly the first time. Derek isn't too hard but "chucky," "chacker," and "toockeh" were some of the more common attempts at this last name, Tucker. 5
