3 Basic Facts Tromso is the northernmost city of the world and is situated at 69 North. It is about 1800 kilometres to Oslo and 350 kilometres to the Arctic Circle. With about inhabitants, it is the biggest city in Northern Norway and the small island of Tromso itself offers everything one could possibly need from restaurants, cafes and hotels to cinemas, bars, pubs, a university and hospital and countless sights and attractions! Copyright: Google Maps Tromso was founded in the 18 th century, although Norwegians and Sami people (the indigenous people of Scandinavia) have been living there for much longer. The city became known as the Gateway to the Arctic in the 20 th century as the famous polar expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen started here. It was also at that time that the city got the nickname Paris of the North apparently people coming to Tromso expected Barbarians but the people of Tromso were nothing like that. They were quite cultivated and well educated and their fashion was in line with what people were wearing in Paris at that time.

4 Today Tromso is the most important city in Northern Norway as it is a centre for education, health, tourism and industry. The University of Tromso is the northernmost of the world and attracts people from every continent. The University Hospital is responsible for the treatment of patients in all over Northern Norway which is possible through so called telemedicine treating the patient and helping in surgeries via Skype basically. Tromso has gained more and more attention recently as Northern Lights and whale safaris gained in popularity. Now people from all over the world come to Tromso to see both and l have some tips for you later on if that is why you are interested in Tromso too! Quick Facts: Country/District: Norway/Troms Official Languages: Norwegian and Northern Sami // English is understood by almost everyone though Time Zone: Central European Time (CET) between October and March // Central European Summer Time (CEST) between March and October Currency: NOK (Norwegian Kroner) // 1 USD = ~ 9 NOK Climate: Subarctic // An average of 2 C (28 F) in January and +15 C (59 F) in July. Contrary to common belief, Tromso is not as cold as you would expect the Arctic to be thanks to the Gulf Stream. Usually, there are only a couple of days in January or February with temperatures around -10 C and there is a lot of rain and ice from November to December. The months with the highest amount of snow are March and April. Natural Phenomena: Northern Lights // The Northern Lights appear between October and March and usually occur at some time between 6pm and 1am. The sky needs to be clear though and they can best be seen and photographed as far away from artificial light as possible.

5 Polar Night // Tromso experiences polar night from 21 November to 21 January. This means that there will be no sunlight during that period as the sun simply does not make it above the horizon. There however is a sort of daylight or twilight between about 9am and 2pm. Midnight Sun // Since it is dark for 2 months in winter, it is light for nearly the whole summer. Officially, midnight sun exists in Tromso between 21 May and 21 July. However technically there is no real darkness between late April and late August. Transportation The easiest way to get to Tromso is by plane. Tromso Airport is situated on Tromso Island about 5 kilometres from the city centre. There are direct connections to London, Stockholm and Oslo. Note: If you have to change planes in Oslo, remember to check in your luggage and go through security again! Once landed, there are three ways to get to the city centre from the airport: By Taxi, SAS Flight Bus and regular bus. A taxi will cost you about $25-30 while the SAS flight bus costs about $10-15 and the regular bus $5. Note: You can only pay with cash on the regular busses but there is an ATM at the airport where you can withdraw and exchange money. Busses number 40 and 42 will take you to the city centre. The bus stop is not situated right at the airport entrance though you can only find the taxis and SAS flight busses there. To get to the bus stop, take the elevator in the entrance hall to get to level -1 and then cross the parking lot and street. The city of Tromso is easily walkable and you can explore the main sights and attractions by foot. You only need to take the bus if you want to visit Tromso Museum (Bus 37), Fjellheisen and the Arctic Cathedral (Bus 26), the Science Centre, Planetarium, Ski Jump and University (Busses 20, 21, 34, 33) or Telegrafbukta, the beach (Busses 33 and 34).

6 Accommodation There are a lot of hotels in Tromso and you can find all of them on the website of Visit Tromso. Therefore it would not make sense to present each and every one to you but only those that I have actually stayed in and can recommend to you. Please note though: Norway is one of the most expensive countries in Europe and accommodation prices in Tromso can seem quite shocking at first. I will however provide some tips for budget travellers later on. ABC Hotell ABC Hotell is one of the cheaper options for accommodation in Tromso. They offer double rooms with a private bathroom for about $110 and double rooms with a shared bathroom for about $80. Breakfast is not included but can be added for $10 a day. The rooms are very clean, as are the shared bathroom facilities. Also, even though the hotel was fully booked during my stay, I never encountered a queue to the bathrooms. The staff is very helpful and nice and the hotel seems to be very popular among young travellers between 20 and 30. One small point of criticism though: Breakfast was not worth its price of $10. The buffet was pretty sparse and you could get a greater variety for the same price at one of the local coffee shops. Viking Hotell The Viking Hotel is situated very centrally, about 5 minutes from the Hurtigruten harbour. Rooms are spacious and clean and even have floor heating in the bathrooms. The breakfast room is quite small though breakfast itself was absolutely satisfying with a great variety of local products from fish and Norwegian brown cheese to crisp bread. ABC and Viking Hotell are part of the same company and thus, staff was very helpful and nice here as well and the hotel also serves a younger clientele. The best about it: You can get free coffee, tea and waffles in the lobby every afternoon and evening!

7 Prices range from $110 for a double room with private bathroom to $125 for a studio apartment with kitchen. They also offer apartments with 3 bedrooms, perfect for groups or families travelling together. Tromso Camping Tromso s camping site is not just for the camper with tent or caravan. If glamping is more your thing and you d like to stay in a cosy cabin in the nature, just a stone s throw from the city, this is the place to go! Tromso Camping offers cabins in different sizes and price categories with the cheapest ones being Economy Cottages which cost $70 to $85 per night, and the most expensive ones being Comfort+ Cabins which cost between $225 and $250. Tromso Camping is situated on the mainland of Norway and not on Tromso Island. That means, it s close to the Arctic Cathedral, the cable car and Tromso s biggest mountain Tromsdalstind which makes it perfect for some exploring. It s only 10 minutes by bus to the city centre and kind of a hidden gem in itself. I had a wonderful stay at the cabins in February and could even spot the Northern Lights there at night! Highly recommended! Clarion Hotel The Edge The Edge Hotel is one of the fanciest but also most expensive options in Tromso. It is a designer hotel and even though, I have not stayed there myself so far, I have visited its facilities and ate at their restaurant Kitchen & Table which I can absolutely recommend. The hotel is located right in the city centre next to the harbour and offers an amazing view on the ocean and the mountains on the mainland. For $160, you can stay in a double room with a private bathroom and breakfast included and $250 will get you a suite with one bedroom.

8 Restaurants Tromso has a lot of restaurants, many of which are specializing in Norwegian cuisine. To list them all would be as pointless as listing each and every hotel. Therefore, let me present you my three favourite restaurants in the city! Pastafabrikken Pastafabrikken is an Italian restaurant close to the main shopping street, Storgata, which offers pasta and pizza for moderate prices. Now, that is not the only reason I like this restaurant of course but having a pizza for $15 is not exactly expensive for Norwegian standards. Their food is fresh and delicious and you will be served within 15 minutes. Also the atmosphere in the restaurant itself is quite lovely with high tables, as well as couches and dimmed lights. Definitely a nice place to eat on an ordinary weekday. Egon Egon is a favourite of mine because they serve the best desserts I have ever tasted and because the atmosphere in the restaurant is just absolutely lovely. Situated in the heart of the city on Storgata, Egon is designed like a little fishermen s hut and offers lots of burgers, steaks, fish, sandwiches and even pizza. The desserts are the very best though so definitely try one of their milkshakes or the Oreo cake. Prices range from $15 to $20 for a lunch dish and $18 to $40 for dinner.

9 Casa Inferno Casa Inferno is by far the best Italian restaurant in town. Situated on a hilltop above the city centre, it offers the best pizzas in Tromso. The restaurant is the perfect place for a weekend or celebratory dinner. It is designed in a steam-punk style from bottom to top even some of the staff wears steam-punk goggles. The service is fast and friendly and the restaurant offers delicious wine and beer from a local microbrewery. They only offer antipasti and pizza but those are big and delicious. Prices range from $12 to $25 for a pizza. Top Sights & Activities Obviously, there is lots to do in the Arctic city of Tromso so as always, here are my favourites: Arctic Alpine Botanic Garden The Botanic Garden of Tromso is situated right next to the University and shows flowers and plants from the world s arctic and alpine regions. It makes for an amazing stroll during springtime or summer and if you visit it in early spring, you might even see flowers covered in ice!

10 Arctic Cathedral The Arctic Cathedral is the landmark of Tromso! Built in the 1960s, this church (yes it is an ordinary Lutheran church and not a cathedral) is supposed to resemble icebergs and Sami tents. If there is no ceremony, you can go inside and take pictures of the lovely, colourful glass front in the back. It makes a beautiful motif from outside though too and you will have an amazing view on the island of Tromso from there since the church is situated on the mainland. Dog-Sledding It is possible to go dog-sledding at the Wilderness Centre on the island Kvaloya between November and April (as long as there is snow). Prices range from $170 to $280 but it sure is an amazing experience. Fjellheisen Fjellheisen is the cable car in Tromso which brings you to the top of Mount Storsteinen in under 4 minutes. There you will have an amazing view on Tromso from above and can even start a hiking trip to Mount Floya or other mountain tops. The cable car station also has a restaurant where you can eat with a view on Tromso

11 Island from above definitely something you should not miss! Hurtigruten The Hurtigruten cruise ships are a vital part of Tromso s tourist industry. They started out as post and freight ships in the 1890s and since then, have cruised the Norwegian coast from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north every day. It is possible to go on board of the ships when they are at Tromso harbour between 2.30 pm and 6.30 pm just to see what it is like to be on board of the coastal steamer or to have lunch in the restaurant. Tromso Museum Tromso Museum is situated a bit outside the city centre but it is definitely worth the trip. The museum tells you all about the Sami (the indigenous people of Norway), the Vikings and medieval times, the Northern Lights, and last but not least, wildlife in Norway. There are also changing temporary exhibitions covering Norwegian topics,

12 such as life as a Sami in modern times or the relationship between Russia and Norway. Ølhallen Brewery and Pub Ølhallen is the oldest pub in Tromso and belongs to the former northernmost brewery of the world: the Mack Brewery. As far as I know, a brewery in Greenland has this title today but a tour around the brewery in Tromso and a beer-tasting of the over 60 different beers at Ølhallen pub afterwards should definitely be on your list! Perspektivet Museum Perspektivet Museum is situated at the end of the pedestrian street in Tromso and exhibits changing photographic exhibitions. So far, these have included exhibitions on the trade of Norwegians with Russians and about religious diversity in Tromso. Polaria Polaria is an Arctic experience centre situated 5 minutes from the city centre in a building that looks like ice floes. It offers a panoramic cinema where you can watch movies about the Northern Lights or the nature and wildlife of Spitsbergen and also hosts an aquarium where you can see and learn more about fish and sea mammals in Northern Norwegian waters. The highlight of Polaria though is the aquarium of bearded seals. There are 4 of them who are publicly fed during a show two times a day and during which they perform all sorts of tricks. Polar Museum The Polar Museum is part of Tromso Museum but situated in the city centre. It exhibits the history of Arctic expeditions and here you can learn all about the lives of Arctic explorers like Knud Rasmussen and Fridtjof Nansen and what is was like to be a trapper on Svalbard in the old days.

13 Whale Watching It is possible to see humpbacks and orcas near Tromso between November and January so if you have ever wanted to see whales, Tromso is a great place to do that. There are different boat trips of different companies ranging from $125 to $225 quite pricey but sure worth it should you spot a whale! Hidden Gems Lake Prestvannet Lake Prestvannet is situated on top of Tromso Island and is a beautiful area if you want to escape the city for a while. There is a 5 kilometre hiking trail leading around the lake and in winter you can even go ice-skating on it. Plus, the lake offers an incredible view on Mount Tromsdalstind, the highest mountain in Tromso, and is furthermore a nice spot to watch and photograph the Northern Lights. Ski Jumping Tower Gronnasen, the ski jumping tower, is situated on a hilltop above the university and offers an amazing and free view over Tromso from above! It also makes a nice hike to get there from the city centre as you only need to follow the so called Lysloypa hiking trail that connects the southern top of the island with the northern tip and is about 10 kilometres long.

14 Telegrafbukta and Sydspissen Tromso has a beach and you should absolutely check it out, no matter what the weather is like! Telegrafbukta as it is called is a popular place for people living in Tromso during the summertime and whenever temperatures rise above 15 degrees and the sun comes out, people meet at the beach to have a barbecue, sun-bathe or even swim! The beach is situated in the south of the island and there is a hiking trail that leads you from the beach to the very southernmost point of Tromso Island which you should absolutely have a stroll on. It offers you the most beautiful views over the ocean and on to the island Kvaloya in the distance. There also is an open-air museum near the beach, showing old wooden houses of the area. Kvaloya Kvaloya is the neighbouring island of Tromso and this so called whale island is the 5 th biggest island of Norway. In the summertime, you can watch reindeer there and in winter, you can see whales. The bus connections to the island are not exactly the best but it is definitely worth the money to rent a car for a day and explore the island it is full of hidden gems!

15 Grotfjord Grotfjord is one of those gems. It is a little village on Kvaloya situated at the coast but surrounded by huge mountains. It has the biggest and most beautiful beach in the area around Tromso and is a nice spot for hiking or sun-bathing. Hella Hella is an open air museum on Kvaloya with more old and colourful wooden houses. It is situated next to a bay which is perfect for fishing, picnicking or watching the Hurtigruten ship glide by at 2pm every day. Rock Carvings Near Hella and right next to the street, you can find rock carvings that are thousands of years old. Definitely a nice picture stop for your Kvaloya road trip. Sommaroya Sommaroya is an island off Kvaloya, about an hour away from Tromso but so worth the trip! I have never seen such a turquoise water anywhere else in the area and the bridge connecting Kvaloya with Sommaroya makes quite a nice motif for a picture. Sommaroya is only a little village but the perfect spot for spending a summer afternoon or even evening if you want to watch the sun wandering around but not going down.

16 Tips for the Budget Traveller Tromso, or Norway in general, is not exactly the cheapest destination but still, it is possible to visit the city on the cheap. You could sleep in the city s only hostel City Camp Tromso or try to find a room via Airbnb. Tromso also has a camping site, though it is pretty far off the city centre and you would want to save the money for a bus card as most of the sights in Tromso can be reached on foot. If you are staying at the hostel or an Airbnb, you have the opportunity to prepare your meals yourself which saves you a whole lot of money. When buying groceries, keep in mind that Rema 1000 generally is the cheapest supermarket while Eurospar always has a lot of special offers. The Coop supermarkets, especially those in the city centre, are rather expensive. Also, tap water is free, healthy and absolutely fresh and delicious so you save money when not buying bottled water. Tap water even is free in restaurants. When it comes to sights and activities, there is lots for you to do and see for free. Perspektivet Museum, the Art Museum, the Hurtigruten, the Botanic Garden and the Northern Norwegian Art Gallery can be visited free of charge. Also hiking, watching the Northern Lights, experiencing the Midnight Sun or going whale-watching so enjoying Norwegian nature is free and after all better than any museum or tourist attraction. Instead of going on a Northern Lights tour, you can search for a spot outside the city centre without much artificial light, yourself. And instead of booking a whale watching tour, you can take the bus to Kvaloya and hike along the fjord to try to spot them on your own. Equally, instead of taking the cable car, you can always hike up Mount Storsteinen to enjoy Tromso from above or go to the ski jumping tower for a less exhausting hike but equally nice views. Finally, come to Tromso with SAS if you are under 26 years of age to get a youth discount or fly with the budget airline Norwegian if you are older. Also take the regular bus from the airport to get to city centre instead of taking a cab or the SAS flight bus. Hopefully these tips will help you to enjoy everything Tromso has to offer even on a small budget!

17 Hunting the Northern Lights Seeing the Northern Lights is one of the highlights of Tromso. On most days, you can even see them from the city centre and maybe even from your hotel room! As already mentioned, the Northern Lights can be seen between October and March, mostly between 6pm and 1am. They mostly appear between 10pm and midnight though. Sometimes it can happen that the whole sky is full of them and sometimes you can only see them in the North. Anyway, to see them you do not necessary need to leave town. If the sky is clear, you can pretty much see them from everywhere around town. If you want to photograph them however, you need to get away from artificial lights, if possible. Of course it is possible to capture them right in the city centre but you will get much better pictures if you leave town all depending on what kind of camera you use, that is. Now you could of course go on a Northern Lights tour. There are several companies who offer such a tour with prices ranging from $95 to $225. They will usually drive you to a place in Kvaloya, the Lyngen Alps or the border to Finland to find a good spot to see and capture the lights. However as these tours are quite expensive, I can only recommend you to book them if the weather forecast is bad. As I said, if the sky

18 is clear, there is absolutely no need to leave Tromso. However if the weather is bad during your whole stay, a Northern Lights safari provides a better chance of seeing the lights as the companies will drive you to the spot with the least amount of clouds within a two hour drive. So check the forecast for your stay and book a safari if needed spontaneously (but at least 24 hours prior to when you want to go as these tours are quite popular). If the weather is good though and you do not want to pay for a safari, the best spots to capture the lights in Tromso are: Telegrafbukta, Lake Prestvannet, the Ski Jumping Tower and Mount Storsteinen. You need a camera which allows you to set the ISO manually or which at least has an automatic function to capture fireworks or stars. I personally use the Panasonic Lumix FZ 100 which is one of the cheaper (and therefore not best) cameras to shoot the Northern Lights. 24 Hours Itinerary I thought I would provide you with a couple of itineraries for your trip to Tromso just to give you an idea of what is realistic to see and do in a certain amount of time. Also, there are things you better not do in winter and things you should not miss out on during summertime, so I have a 24 hours itinerary for each season for you (and yes, there basically are only two seasons in Norway). Summer Morning: Start off your day in Tromso with a stroll around the city centre. Walk on Storgata and take pictures of the Old Town Hall, the main square, Tromso Cathedral (the wooden church in the city centre not to confuse with the Arctic Cathedral), and the harbour. Once you have reached the end of Storgata, you will pass by Olhallen the oldest pub of town. They open already at 9am and even though it might be too early for a beer, definitely head inside anyway to take a selfie with THE polar bear of Tromso and have a look at the 60 different kinds of beer at the counter.

19 Make your way on to Polaria afterwards, the Arctic experience centre just two minutes away from Olhallen. The feeding of the bearded seals starts at 12pm which gives you some time to walk around the aquariums first and maybe even watch one of the movies in the cinema. PRO TIP: Polaria has the best souvenir shop in town (in my opinion) so if you are looking for a gift for someone back home, this is the place to buy it. They even have some lovely mugs which show the Northern Lights once you have poured some tea or coffee in them and are otherwise simply black. Afternoon: From Polaria, take the bus to Tromso Museum and learn more about the Sami people, the Vikings or the Northern Lights whatever interests you most. You could of course visit every exhibition but there is so much more to see in the city so try to focus on what really interests you and skip the rest. Afterwards, instead of taking the bus back to town immediately, head to Telegrafbukta the beach of Tromso which is only a mere 5 minute walk away. From there, start walking towards the southernmost tip of Tromso Island, called Sydspissen and there wait for the arrival of the Hurtigruten cruise ship at about 2pm if it is still early or just enjoy the view over the ocean and the whale island before heading back to the city by bus. Back in the city centre, go on board of the Hurtigruten for some coffee and cake and

20 enjoy the view. Later on, head to Perspektivet Museum if you are a fan of photography or to Polar Museum if you want to learn more about Arctic explorers. You could also go shopping in the nearby mall Nerstranda or on Storgata. Evening: Once you are done with shopping or spending time at the museum, go and have some dinner at either Egon or Pastafabrikken which are both situated right in the city centre. The evening is not over yet so you want to eat more than just a salad. After dinner you see, it is time to see the highlights of the city: the Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen. The good thing about summer is that it is bright outside 24 hours a day which gives you so much more time for exploring. So take the bus to the main land and visit the Arctic Cathedral first. The Cathedral is open until 7pm so but do not worry if you arrive there later. The church makes for a beautiful picture from outside too and the thing with the colourful glass front is that you can only see the colours from inside if the weather is good. If it is grey and rainy, you can only see the colours from outside weird, right? Afterwards, take the bus or walk to the cable car station Fjellheisen. During the summer, the last cable car makes its way down again at around midnight which gives you more than enough time to enjoy the view on Tromso while the sun just does not want to set. You can have a beer at the restaurant while enjoying the view or you can go on a little stroll on the mountain top.

21 The southbound Hurtigruten makes its way to the harbour at around quarter to midnight, so you might still get a glimpse and a picture of it from above. Make sure to check the bus timetable though before heading back to the hotel as busses stop running at around midnight too. Otherwise you would need to walk back to the city centre though with the sun still shining, you will encounter a really nice view from Tromso Bridge which connects the city with the mainland so it might not be such a bad idea to walk after all. Winter If you are visiting Tromso during polar night, so between November and January, you only have about 4 hours of daylight to explore the city which means you cannot really use the summer itinerary. Instead you would have to be outside when it is bright, so between 9.30am and 1.30pm, and head inside to visit museums and such afterwards. You won t miss anything outside then as it is dark anyway. Morning: The perfect day in Tromso during polar night has to be spend outside to explore nature and wildlife. You could go on a whale watching tour in the morning or take the bus to Kvaloya to explore the island on your own. Chances are that you might even spot a whale from land if you hike along the fjords Ersfjord or Kaldfjord. If you do not want to spend so much money for a whale safari or you would rather spend the day on Tromso Island, you could either visit the Ski Jumping Tower or

22 Fjellheisen. If you follow the Lysloypa hiking trail to the north, you will eventually get to the Gronnasen ski jumping tower from where you have an incredible (and free) view over the city. The hike takes about one or two hours, depending on your pace but it sure is beautiful. Make sure to bring hiking boots that are suitable for snow though because the trail is also used for skiing in winter. Of course, if you are trained and you would rather go on ski, you can always rent a pair of skis in the city centre. Also, do not worry about starting early when it is still dark the trail is lit! If you are more of the non-athletic sort though, no worries, I can totally understand. In that case, take the bus to the Arctic Cathedral first thing in the morning and head to the cable car station afterwards. The view on Tromso from above is even more beautiful during polar night, especially if the sky is clear. You can hike to the top of Mount Fløya or just have a cup of tea in the restaurant to get warm again. Which of these options you end up choosing, they all guarantee you amazing views! Afternoon: In the afternoon, it is time for some culture after having already enjoyed what Tromso has to offer in nature. Head to Polaria and watch the feeding of the bearded seals at 3pm; visit Tromso Museum and learn all about the history and culture of Northern Norway; go to the Polar Museum and learn more about Arctic explorers or visit Perspektivet Museum for some beautiful photographs.

23 In winter, life in Norway is generally much slower so there is no need for you to hurry from one museum to the next. Choose one or two that interest you most and be sure to plan in some time for coffee and cake in between. Evening: As in summer though, have a good meal in the evening as the night is getting long. You could go on a Northern Lights safari if the weather forecast is not promising and you will not be back in the city until 1am. During those safaris, you can usually spend some time at a fireplace in a Sami tent to drink some coffee or eat biscuits before heading outside again to hopefully admire and capture the lights. Your tour guide is most likely experienced with photography and can give you some tips on capturing them or even shoots a portrait of you with the lights in the background. If you do not want to spend much money or if the forecast is great, make your way outside the city centre for even better chances to spot and capture the Northern Lights. That could for example be Lake Prestvannet, Telegrafbukta or Sydspissen, or the Gronnasen Ski Jumping Tower. You do not have to travel to see the lights of course but generally, they are much weaker in the city due to all the artificial lights. So if you want to see really bright green or even purple lights, those are the best spots! What to Pack As Tromso is situated in the Arctic of Norway, warm clothes are a must year round. Temperatures can reach 25 degrees in summer but it can also snow in June so you want to be prepared for everything. Bring layers, that is to say thermal underwear, a hat, scarf, gloves, wool socks and a good winter jacket in winter; shirts, pullovers, hiking shoes, a water resistant jacket and trousers as well as a fleece jacket year round. Wellies in summer as well as spikes and winter boots in winter are also necessary if you want to explore than just the city centre. If you want to take pictures of the Northern Lights, bring a DSLR or good bridge camera and a tripod.
