1 PALESTINE ISD Friday, October 26, 2012 Hello everyone, I hope you were able to attend a Fall Superintendent meeting this week. Notes from the meetings will be sent out next week. Some of the highlights were: Palestine ISD will provide each employee a turkey for Thanksgiving. Each employee will receive a free 8x10 family portrait for Christmas. Employees will receive a retention incentive this fall. All construction is nearing completion, the CTE Building renovation will be complete between Thanksgiving and Christmas and the softball field by softball season. CTE/Dual Credit enrollment at the high school has skyrocketed. CTE students have doubled and there are approximately 150 high school students taking 300 college classes through Wildcat University. Good luck to the Ladycat Basketball Team, as they start the season with their first scrimmage in New Summerfield this Saturday at 10 a.m. and to our Varsity Wildcat Football Team tonight in Groesbeck at 7:30 p.m. Jason Marshall 1 Superintendent

2 Congratulations to the Freshman and JV Football Teams! Freshman defeated Groesbeck making their record 6-1. JV defeated Groesbeck JV remains undefeated at 7-0. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Football - Varsity will play Groesbeck on tonight at 7:30 pm in Groesbeck. Football - PMS will play Mexia at Wildcat Stadium next Thursday, November 1st at 5:00 pm. Football - JV & Freshman will play Mexia next Thursday, November 1st at 5:30 pm in Mexia. Football - Varsity will play Mexia next Friday night, November 2nd, 7:30 pm at Wildcat Stadium (Senior Night). VOLLEYBALL The Varsity Volleyball season has ended. The girls defeated Rusk this past Friday. PMS Volleyball - The team will play Mexia on Monday, October 29th at 5:00 pm in Mexia. CROSS COUNTRY Boys & Girls teams competed at the district meet in Fairfield this week. Boys Varsity won the district title, 7 in a row! Girls Varsity and Girls JV were runner-ups in district behind Fairfield. Boys & Girls teams will advance to the regional meet for an opportunity to qualify in the state meet. 6 Brandon Jayroe, Principal Movie Time! Every Tuesday and Thursday, students will now practice reading while enjoying a movie with their lunch. The sound is removed and the subtitles play. Tonight at 6 pm (Friday, Oct 26th) in the Story Library, our piano class will host its first recital of the year. All are invited to come and listen to the students tickle the ivory. 6

7 Southside students truly are WILD about learning This week at Southside our students participated in Red Ribbon Week Being Drug and Bully Free! Coach Linda Paul and Mrs. Elaine Hazel worked extremely hard to create a particular theme for each day of the week to help promote participation and drug awareness. Thank you guys for making the week a huge success!! Monday: Shade out Drugs.Sunglasses Tuesday: Sock it to Drugs.Wear Crazy Socks Wednesday: Put a Lid on Drugs.Wear Hats Thursday: Be All You Can Be.Wear Camo Clothes Friday: Team Up Against Drugs..Wear Your Favorite Team Shirt Our students had the pleasure of participating in an interactive bullying presentation provided by D.A.R.E. Officer Green. Thank you Officer Green once again for your time. Mrs. Knott kicked off the start of our Book Fair on Thursday Oct. 25 and the kids were super excited! We are hosting our Parent Night for the Book Fair on Monday Oct. 29 from 5:00-7:00. Stephen Cooksey Principal 7

8 Our nurse completed the very important vision and hearing screening on 575 students this week. Picture retakes are Friday. We have the best smiles!! Kindergarten teachers are conducting RTI meetings to evaluate assessment and plan for accelerated learning of all students. 9 WASHINGTON EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Students are continuing to learn and grow at Washington. Students were busy this week working on phonological awareness, and letter knowledge, along with comparing attributes and heights and lengths. WECC First Parent Cooking Class was a GREAT SUCCESS! Parents met Thursday night at the Northside Primary kitchen to enjoy a cooking class demonstrated by Mimi Spreen, PISD (Chartwells) Food Service Director. Parents received an 18 Piece Cookware Set and all the food to prepare Beef Stroganoff, Green Beans, and Waldorf Salad at home for their family. We all had a great time and we are looking forward to our class in November, which vegetables from our school garden will be on our menu. Thank you to our parents, Mimi, Michelle Merryman and our PHS Culinary Arts Students. Clifford, the Big Red Dog came to visit Washington. Thank you to Librarian Victoria Campbell for helping to organize the event, along with Kristy Marcellus and Lee Loveless and of course Clifford.
