1 Pasadena I.S.D. School Health Advisory Council Parent Forum April 21, 2015 MINUTES Members and Guests Present: Please see sign in sheets. Karen Taylor, SHAC Parent Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:04pm. Old Business Minutes from February 17, 2015 were included in handout and were reviewed individually. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Angela Rubio and seconded by Hugo Amaro. New Business RECOGNIZING COMMUNITY PARTNERS: Karen Taylor started the meeting by recognizing community partners who have made a significant contribution to the P.I.S.D. SHAC and the school district s efforts to create a healthy, active community. Chick-fil-A: Belinda Ellis/Marketing Director Joined us in promoting health and wellness to PISD employees by partnering in our district Employee Wellness Challenges Provided healthy incentives including grilled chicken sandwich and salad cards. In addition providing door prize incentives for use at our SHAC meetings to encourage parent attendance. Dairy Max/Fuel Up to Play 60: Chaun Vaughn PISD received a $10,000 Houston Texans Hometown grant award through Fuel Up to Play 60, Dairy Max, and the Houston Texans to implement a stencil project on seven campuses (Gardens, Red Bluff, South Belt, South Shaver, Sparks, Turner and Williams). In addition, $48,000 was given to PISD Nutrition Services to support a Breakfast Expansion program

2 Gulfgate Dodge: Nick Montoya Gulfgate dodged teamed up with PISD to support the Kick Off to Good Health campaign Fall Selected students had a chance to attempt a field goal prior to a varsity game. If the student made the goal, he/she received $100 for their campus to use for the Coordinated School Health program. Supported our PE program by generously donating $4,500 to purchase over 1,200 Get Fit Jog shirts for students in grades 3-6 th who earned the right to participate in the run on April 25. Healthy Living Matters Pasadena: Katie Chennisi HLM-Pasadena is dedicated to increasing active living and healthy eating opportunities that aim to reduce childhood obesity in our community. Works with the Pasadena Community by increasing access to healthier foods via supporting local corner stores and restaurants. Increases opportunities for physical activity by providing resources to local schools and city planners, Increases opportunities for health education and public awareness by encouraging policies that create healthier environments. Several of our SHAC members have had the opportunity to be part of the HLM Pasadena Community Task force. Katie and HLM have provided resources and information at many of our district health and wellness events including our Healthy Living Family series, additionally, provided child bike helmets, lights, and healthy cook books to many of our families at these events. HLM has also helped support our School Health Advisory Council by providing SHAC information cards and a SHAC banner for marketing. Katie has been an active community member on our SHAC for the past two years Pasadena H-E-B (no one present): Joined P.I.S.D. in promoting healthy eating and exercise to our employees by partnering with us for the Move More and Eat Smart Employee Wellness Challenges Provided healthy baskets for challenge winners as well as a healthy fruit baskets to give away at the Ad Council meeting to kick off the challenge. HEB has also been a part of our Healthy Living Events, providing resources and information on healthy eating to our families

3 Pasadena Health Center (no one present): John Sweitzer with the Pasadena Health Center has been an active community partner on our SHAC for several years As part of the Health Education committee, John and the Pasadena Health Center have given support to PISD complying with various legislative items including mandated CPR training and oral hygiene lessons. John donated CPR mannequins to the district to use year round for CPR instruction as well as support yearly mass trainings like the one at Pasadena High School He also facilitated the development of an instructional video, Dr. Dan and the Dental Explorer, and lesson plan to be used on the Elementary campuses to educate students on oral hygiene. San Jacinto YMCA/Hugo Amaro-Membership and Healthy Living Director: Hugo Amaro with the YMCA is an active community partner on our SHAC Hugo has spearheaded the collaboration for a Healthy Living Family Cooking series we hope to see next year through our High School Culinary programs In addition, the YMCA has participated in many of our Healthy Living Family events providing Health and Wellness information and opportunities to our families. The YMCA has supported our Employee Wellness program in PISD by providing incentives for our Employee Wellness Challenges Vickie Morgan, PISD Board of Trustees Member addressed the audience. She thanked the audience for their continued support in helping make PISD and the community healthy. She thanked parents for the hard work they put in at home supporting their children. DISTRICT INITIATIVES: Mass CPR Training (HE) Jeremy Jackson- Day Athletic Trainer Pasadena HS Showed video of mass CPR training conducted on April 1, 2015 at Pasadena HS with 750 freshman It is required by law students in grades 7-12 have the 30 minute training, Jeremy felt it would be more valuable to have the hands on training He credited the incredible community support, especially from John Sweitzer, CEO of the Pasadena Health Center, and Pam Tevis from PISD for helping to get it started His hope is to expand this program to all High Schools in PISD with the possibility of getting all freshman to the Pasadena Civic Center and have them all trained.

4 One to One updates (PE, HE, F&C) Steve Wentz- PISD Chief Technology Officer Steve Wentz explained the one to one roll out to parents. He highlighted the district plan to provide wireless students to all students who do not have WiFi. There will be a small annual fee, no monthly billing. District will construct 15 towers across the district District will provide a router to each student who currently does not have internet access. There will be a small fee which has yet to be determined. Students and parents will have access to the health and wellness apps Students internet usage will be filtered to the same extent they would if they were sitting in their classroom. Filters vary by age group (elementary, middle, etc). Parent Center Update (F&C) Gloria Gallegos Assoc. Superintendent, Special Programs Gloria was not able to attend. She was scheduled to give an update on the addition of a new Parent Center located next to Mae Smythe on Pasadena Blvd. The center is designed to focus on supporting parents and to give more of an opportunity for parents to be engaged with the school district. Online Physical Education and Health (PE, HE) Amber MacNeish- Physical Education Instructor/Red Bluff Elementary Amber handles the PISD online health and physical education class and presented on the course content of each The goal for online PE is to make exercise enjoyable and accessible with students developing their own fitness plan The goal for online health is to become health literate The advantage to the online class is it fits the needs of the students by allowing more individualization. It also prepares them for college by teaching them how to do online courses Amber asked for the support of the SHAC to encourage students to opt for the online classes Amber was excited to hear that all students will have access to the internet allowing more opportunities for students to take online classes and provide more rigorous checks for completing the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) HS Culinary Healthy Cooking Event (F&C, NS) Hugo Amaro-San Jacinto YMCA/Membership and Healthy Living Director Hugo presented his plan, as the co-chair for the Family & Community Engagement Committee, to have Healthy Cooking events for students and parents conducted by the high school culinary classes Angela Rubio mentioned that it might include feeder patter schools Hugo said the initiative would start small so it could be tweaked before the full roll out

5 Angela requsted parents think about what would encourage them to attend an event like this Electronic Resources for Health and Wellness (PE, F&C) Angela Rubio Coordinated School Health Specialist Angela Rubio gave an overview of the updated SHAC website showing parents how to navigate and find information The website continues to grow and information will be added on a consistent basis Parents were encouraged to visit the website to find out more information about the SHAC and submit an application to Join if so desired. COUNTY INITIATIVES: Healthy Living Matters Initiative Updates Katie Chennisi/ HCPHES Project Coordinator HLM Pasadena Katie highlighted the initiatives HLM is currently working on in Pasadena HLM came into existence through a grant with the focus on creating access to healthy foods and places to promote active living as well as raise awareness about creating a healthy community The community task force, made up of community partners, the City of Pasadena, and PISD has created programs such as the Healthy Corner Store Initiative. This initiative consists of three Pasadena corner stores who now offer healthier options for snacks. In addition, they host a weekly taste testing of new fruits or vegetables to promote healthy eating choices. The Healthy Dining Matters Initiative currently consists of Richey s Country Cookin who is now offering healthier menu items. Katie also provided and overview a project with the City of Pasadena and a major funder to create a community garden and farmers market in the North Pasadena area. The goal is to create nutrition equality in North Pasadena. There was a video shown which was submitted for a grant. Katie also mentioned the bike helmets and bike racks that were given to PISD through Healthy Living Matters. HCPHES Built Environment Unit Ellen Schwaller/Community Health & Design Coordinator Ellen reviewed resources and explained part of her role was to help create policy that will affect infrastructure, taking into account health and safety for any future long range plans for the city. She appealed to the group for their input and support STATE INITIATIVES Office of the Attorney General Child Support Division- Mercedes Santillanes/Houston Regional Outreach Coordinator Mercedes offered her expertise as a resource (areas examples include P.A.P.A training, assisting with parenting issues)

6 She is willing to speak to groups who would like more information She has presented at Tegeler and also various Health Fairs, including Keller MS.
