1 INVITATION TO SUBMIT WORKS FOR HANSEartWORKS 2016 In connection with The Hanseatic Days 2016, taking place in Bergen, Norway from June 9th - 12th, The City of Bergen will arrange the 10th edition of HANSEartWORKS. The exhibition will consist of works by artists from member cities, and will last from June 10th until the end of July. The exhibition will be hosted jointly by two venues; S12 Gallery and Open Access Studio, and KRAFT Bergen, both of which are known for their focus on material-based art. The City of Bergen together with KRAFT and S12 are inviting artists, craftsmen and designers to submit works coming from a material-based practice. A few simple rules have been created. The work submitted must be material-based (the art, the craft and the design presented) and must fit on a EUR pallet L120cm x W80cm x H100cm. The EUR Pallet s standardized size, material and rules for use, will play an important role and must be an integral part of the work submitted. The EUR Pallet should serve as both the platform for, and the means of transportation of, the work - within the city as well as in the gallery spaces. We will abide to the European Pallet Associations regulations. The EUR-pallet also Euro-pallet or EPAL-pallet is the standard European pallet as specified by the European Pallet Association (EPAL). Pallets conforming to the standardization are eligible for the European Pallet Pool (EPP) -the system allows for an exchange as "pallet for pallet". The EUR/EPAL-pallet is mm; it is a four-way pallet made of wood that is nailed with 78 special nails in a prescribed pattern. Wikipedia Rules both written and unwritten play important roles in our daily lives as well as in the way which we approach materials, tradition and the creative process. Igor Stravinsky once said: my freedom will be so much greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles. * Thus, the EUR pallet will affect both the format of the work, as well as its presentation. It will create borders, and challenge the artists, craftsmen and designers during both the creation of the work as well as during its presentation.

2 In many ways the pallet can be seen as a symbol for the obstructions and rules we construct and abide to artistically, personally and in society as a whole. Works can be exhibited both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor works need to be designed in such a way that they can be secured in place on the pallet and protected from the elements, both rain and wind in addition to human interaction. The two venues will function as container harbors during the exhibition. Collecting, mapping and organizing the consignments for distribution in the city. During The Hanseatic Days the pallets will be exhibited publicly at different locations outdoors and indoors in the city of Bergen. At the end of The Hanseatic Days most pallets will be transported back to the Galleries in S12 and KRAFT for an extended exhibition lasting throughout July We invite all Hanseatic cities to submit one to three artist. The artists/curators Æsa Björk and Martin Woll Godal will curate the exhibition based on the submitted material in dialogue with the international jury for HANSEartWORKS. PRACTICAL INFORMATION The process: Artists submit their proposals to the Hanseatic city closest to them The City selects 1-3 artists to participate The Hanseatic city submits their selection to Bergen by November 1st 2015 The Jury and the curators will select the works by mid-november 2015 Time for delivery of work in Bergen: To Be Announced Exhibition opening: June 10th 2016 The Conditions: The participating artists must arrive in Bergen no later than June 7th 2016 for mounting their work and to participate in the professional program. The participating cities cover for the artist: travel costs, accommodation, materials, transport of the artworks both ways as well as insurance during transport. The City of Bergen offers the participating artist a symbolic artist fee of Nok , one free meal a day, assistance with mounting of the work, insurance of the work while exhibited and helps find a centrally located apartments with access to kitchen and bathroom, each to be shared by 5-7 artists. Estimated price pr. person pr. day is between Information and marketing Presentation and marketing of the exhibition HANSEartWORKS 2016 will be taken care of by the host, and based on material received from the participating artists.
