1 Burgoyne News I S S U E 2 T H U R S D A Y 2 3 R D O C T O B E R Welcome to the 2nd issue of our Newsletter Things to do in the holidays The school web site has a page of activities in which pupils can take part during the holidays. There is a lot you can do this coming half term break. Just go to our web site: click on: Home > Parents > School term and holidays information > Things to do in the holidays or scan this QR Code with your smartphone or tablet. Macmillan Coffee Morning and cake sales Once more we hope you will find it both helpful and entertaining TOTAL RAISED Our Macmillan Coffee Morning was a huge success this year. Coffee and cakes were served by year 8 pupils in the school library and ran from o clock until o clock on the 26th September, it was non stop! At the same time cakes were being sold to the children. I must express my sincere thanks to every child, parent and friend of Burgoyne Middle School who bought, baked and donated cakes for this important annual event. We were delighted and very slightly overwhelmed with both the quantity and quality of your donations. Every child was able to buy cake and we had enough to have a cake sale the following week. How do you feel when you do something that s really kind or helpful?
2 P A G E 2 The average person in the UK spends around 3 hours 45 minutes a day watching telly (ofcom.org.uk) That s almost 2 non-stop telly watching months a year! A lot of time. Before our Macmillan event I had shared with the children how important raising money for Macmillan is and how the money that we have raised might be used: 25 pays for a Macmillan nurse to support a family affected by cancer for one hour. 138 pays for 3 hours of confidential support and information for anyone with questions or concerns about cancer 61 pays for 4 hours for a Macmillan benefits adviser to help someone struggling with the costs of cancer could 181 pay for a Macmillan social worker or family support worker for a day, helping people manage the social and practical problems of living with cancer. 278 could keep a Macmillan information and support centre stocked for a month with all the resources it needs to support people affected by cancer 370 could pay for the hire of a room for a year so a self-help and support group could hold regular meetings. Ms Harvey VERY WELL DONE EVERYONE! Dodgeball In this annual Bedfordshire tournament Year 6 were runners up, winning four games out of five. Year 8 finished fourth out of five. Well done to all those who took part: KS2 - Benji Adams, Eddie Arnold, Megan Zammit (Captain), Kacper Plachecki, Kacper Kobus, Annie Safford and Alfie Smith. KS3 - Alex Arnold, Danny Butler (Captain), Scott Grummitt, Michael Hinds, Oliver Kirton, Caitlin Thomas and Charlotte Watts.
3 ADVERT P A G E 3 Next to Potton Lower School, Everton Road, Potton, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 2QF Telephone: Next to Potton Lower School, Everton Road, Potton, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 2QF Telephone: Now Under New Management We offer fun, stimulating and structured before and after school care for all children from the age of 4 up to middle school age. We provide a balanced breakfast and a home cooked evening meal from our purpose built setting. Monday to Friday: 7.45am to 8.40am and 3.20pm to 6.00pm Come along and see us during our Open Week starting Monday 10 th November for more information Girls' Football The Year 7 & 8 girls put up a fine display in the Play Station Cup against Simon Balle School from Hertford, unfortunately we lost 3-0. A magnificent effort from all players: Hannah Chapman, Katie Alexander-Smith, Alex Arnold (Vice Captain), Lizzie Deans, Jessica Guest, Chloe Laver, Lucy Paget, Maia Rushton, Molly Starr, Caitlin Thomas (Captain), Mirette Shaalan, Charlotte Watts and Jessica Woodward. Netball Edward Peake came to Burgoyne for a friendly game of netball playing their year 8s against our 7s and their Year 7s against a mixed year 6 and 7 from Burgoyne. Both games were played in a tremendous spirit. Well done to Charlotte Morgan for scoring eight goals! Car parking in Mill Lane and Everton Road If parking in Mill Lane or Everton Road when dropping off or picking up pupils, we ask parents to avoid parking across the driveways of our neighbouring residents.
4 P A G E 4 Boys Football After huge effort from all of our year 7 boys they lost both their games in the Bedfordshire and Playstation Cups. Daniel Broadwith (Captain) was fantastic in both games as was the rest of the team: Benji Adams, Niall Baker (Vice Captain), Nathaniel Gurumani, Morgan Dean, Kacper Kobus, Nathan Fuller, Joshua McDonald, Alfie Smith and Joshua Neville. Year 6 Boys played an exciting friendly football match at Sandye Place repeating the same score line as last year losing 5-4 despite two magnificent goals from Benji Adams (Vice Captain). Well done to Eddie Arnold, Dylan Fraser (Goalkeeper), James Staplehurst, Kacper Kobus (Captain), Kacper Plachecki, Rhys Williams, Adam Russell, Alfie Smith, and Rhys-Jon Williams. We would like to send, Celia Smith of Wrestlingworth, a huge thank you for donating a large amount of paper to the school. It will come in extremely useful and benefit all of our pupils. Reminders Year 8 parents, please note that applications for transfer to upper school need to be completed by Friday 31st October. After half term, pupils will need to wear their winter uniform. 6 P A G E 6 Burgoyne Middle School wish to recruit new governors The role of a school governor is extremely interesting and rewarding, however, it requires a high level of commitment, the ability to read and digest a range of school documentation, from school policies to the budget and an understanding of what would be expected of you as a public servant. We are most fortunate, at Burgoyne, to have a committed and experienced governing body but we recognise the importance of ensuring that we have a variety of skills, experience and expertise to draw on from governors. If you would like to support the school, at the heart of your local community and have a clear understanding of the complexities of leading a large organisation and would like to know more, please contact Mrs Pauline Norris on , who will arrange for an informal conversation about your interest. Yours sincerely Ms Harvey Interim Headteacher Mr Ball Chair of Governors
