2 IN early January 2004, the Queen Mary 2, the largest passenger ship ever built, set out on its maiden voyage. It is currently the only oceangoing giant to sail regularly between the old and new worlds across the Atlantic. On board, there are not only cabins and suites for up to 3,090 passengers, but also 45 elevators from Schindler Marine. Queen Mary 2 was built in France at the Chantiers de l Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire on the Loire estuary. This is where other legendary liners such as the Normandie and France (now Norway) originated. Between July 2002 and December 2003, there were an average of 48 engineers and technicians from Schindler Marine on board to install 45 elevators and four escalators. Partner for this project was Schindler Italy, which was in direct contact with Chantiers de l Atlantique shipyard, but delegated the entire technical support to Schindler France. The project coordinator was Jean- Pierre Bureau from Schindler Nantes, a man with great know-how in the marine business. The time schedule for installation was so tight that in the last four months there were five or six installation technicians working permanently on the ship every day. Collaboration between Schindler people from the two countries worked very well. The up to 3,090 passengers are served by 30 elevators. Eighteen of them are in the four stairways and travel between decks four and 11 or 12. Two panoramic elevators are in the Grand Atrium and two behind the bridge on the outside of the superstructure from where they afford spectacular views of the ocean. A further eight elevators are specially constructed for handicapped passengers. There are also 15 elevators designated for crew and service. 3 QUEEN MARY 2 - THE SHIP Designed by Stephen Payne (London), SMC London and Tillberg of Sweden, the new Cunard transatlantic flagship features classic hallmarks of the early 20th century, such as sweeping staircases and public spaces extending through several decks as in her predecessor and namesake, RMS Queen Mary of The Queen Mary 2 has an overall length of 345 meters and an overall height of 72 meters with 17 decks. The draft of the ship is 10 meters and she has a beam (greatest width) of 41 meters at waterline and 45 meters at bridge level. Propulsion comes from four pods rated at 21.5 megawatts each with a total of 157,000 horsepower. The Queen Mary 2 can cross the Atlantic at a speed of 30 knots (nautical miles per hour). Paneling of the conventional passenger elevators was made by fine Italian craftsmanship using cherry and pear tree wood, as well as briar root. Ceilings are of a special amber-colored glass diffusing a soft Art Deco lighting throughout. The doors are reminiscent of early 20th century Parisian design, blending into the classical interior atmosphere of the ship. Schindler Miconic controls simulate all possibilities of car-to-car assignments, deck-by-deck, and select the best user solution. The computing power allows the evaluation of more traffic and group status parameters than practically any other system. The vertical transportation units include 22 passenger elevators, 15 service and eight 360 kilograms Americans with Disability Act (ADA)-certified wheelchair-accessible elevators. Four Schindler SWE 35-60K service escalators have a rise of 3.32 meters between two decks. Prior to the final design and production, Schindler Italy prepared different mock-ups of the cars with interiors according to a series of specifications by Cunard s appointed architects Fredrik Johansson of Tillberg Design Sweden, Andy Collier of SMC London and Richard Dixon as project director. It took three visits to Concorezzo, Italy to finally give final approval and clear the way for manufacturing the units. 64 December 2004 Elevator World

The interior of a passenger elevator The four panoramic and the remaining passenger cars were fully assembled in Italy and transported over land to Chantiers de l Atlantique. Eleven service elevators were assembled on board by June 2003 and were used for logistical purposes by some 1,500 workers with their materials and equipment during the outfitting of the ship. 7 VERTICAL TRANSPORTATION Continued THE SCHINDLER TEAM Overall project management was carried out by Gaetano Conca, Schindler Italy, with site project coordination by Jean-Pierre Bureau of Schindler Nantes. The French escalator team brought the four SWE 35-60K units horizontally through the ship using four cranes simultaneously. V. Cimmino and Christophe Padiou of Schindler France were responsible for final tests and the commissioning of all 45 elevators. Claudio Serrandrei carried out the site supervision. He also oversees the work done by Schindler at the shipyards in Fincantieri, Italy. Kurt Ulrich is an outside writer who wrote this originally for the April 2004 Schindler employee magazine.
