1 Guide to RefWorks In order to simplify the management of references and bibliographies, there are several different tools, so-called reference management software. With them you can collect, organize and present your references. You do not have to write reference lists by hand, this is done by the program, which saves you a lot of time. This guide will help you get started with RefWorks. It goes through creating an account, importing various kinds of references to RefWorks as well as how to cite & refer and how to create a reference list in MS Word. More information about RefWorks, others reference management software and how to refer can be found at Linköping University Library's web pages. Create a RefWorks account 1. Go to the library website about RefWorks. 2. Click on Create an account/log in. 3. Select Sign up for an Individual Account and follow the instructions. Import references into RefWorks Import references into RefWorks is done differently depending on whether it is an article, a book or a web page. Follow the instructions below to learn how to import all three source types. First however, please log in to your RefWorks account. Import articles To configure the direct export to RefWorks, you must first click on the Scholar Preferences link in Google Scholar and as your Bibliography Manager select RefWorks. Conduct your search in Google Scholar. Each record displayed will have an Import into RefWorks link, Click on the link. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder. Articles can also be imported into RefWorks from library databases, to find the database you are using, see the following file. Import books WorldCat.org A good search tool to import bokreferenser. Conduct your search in WorldCat and click on the book title. Choose Cite/Export from the menu in the far-right upper corner. Select Export to RefWorks. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder in RefWorks.

2 It is also possible to import titles from the catalog Libris. Libris National library catalog for Swedish universities and colleges. Conduct your search and mark the records you want to import. Click on CITE at the bottom of the screen. Choose RefWorks from the FORMAT drop-down menu. Copy the text below. Log in to RefWorks. Select References>Import from the toolbar. Select RefWorks Tagged Format as the data source and database. Mark the alternative Import data from the following text. Paste the text in the field below. Click Import. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder in RefWorks. Importing websites with RefGrab IT to RefWorks Start in RefWorks (first time using RefGrab-it): Go to Tools in the main menu and click on RefGrab-it in the menu. Go to the headline RefGrab-It Bookmarklet and right click on the underlined text RefGrab-it and save as a bookmark in your web browser. Go in to the relevant page in your web browser: Start your web browser, search out a relevant website. Once you have the web page in front of you on the screen, activate RefGrab-it via your saved bookmark in your web browser. RefGrab-it will then start and put itself in front of the web page. RefGrab-it now shows the web page as a reference. Mark the reference and click on Import to RefWorks, the web page is exported directly to RefWorks. The reference is now in the Last Imported Folder in RefWorks. Note: Keep in mind that this does not work on all web pages, sometimes, an error message appears when you try to start RefGrab-it. If you are using Internet Explorer try to switch to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. If that does not work, you need to add the reference manually into RefWorks.

3 Add a reference manually into RefWorks Sometimes you cannot import a reference to RefWorks, it is most common with websites. Then you add the reference manually instead. In RefWorks select New Reference. Select the reference style you want to use, e.g. "Liu Oxford ". Field Used by: LIU Oxford Select the Reference Type: Webpage Then fill in the fields as follows. Authors: Alexandersson, Anna (If author is missing this field can be omitted entirely). Title: "Generation squeamishness" knocks out the medical care Last uppdated, year: (the date on which the Web page was published or alternatively last updated). Acessed, Year: 2014 (the date when you were inside and read the article) Acessed, Month/Day: 08/15 URL: Publisher: Aftonbladet Add to folder: Choose the folder where you want to save the reference. Click on Save Reference. In the reference list: Alexandersson, Anna, "Generation squeamishness" knocks out the medical care", Aftonbladet, (08/15, 2014).

4 Write-N-Cite 4: cite and create a reference list Write-N-Cite 4 is a free plugin that connects RefWorks and Word. The program makes it easy to insert references in your text, and to create a reference list of all references used. Write-N-Cite 4 works best with Windows operating system and word processing program MS Word. To install the program. This is done from within RefWorks, go to the Tools menu. From here you can download and install the program. When the program is installed, it will be available from the Word toolbar. To use the program. 1. Start Word and click on RefWorks in the toolbar menu. 2. Sign in to your RefWorks account by clicking on the Log In icon. 3. Choose the RefWorks alternative and login with your username and password or with a Login Code. It can be found below Tools, Write-N-Cite in RefWorks. The code is unique and is valid for 4 hours.

5 4. Select the output style you want to use by clicking on the Style drop-down menu and select the desired style (e.g. LiU Oxford ). All in-text citations and in the bibliography will be displayed in the chosen output style. You can anytime change the output style. 5. To add an in-text citation in your report, select Insert Citation from the toolbar and then Insert New to gain access to all your references, the last used references are displayed above the Insert New option.

6 6. In the new menu, Insert/Edit Citation, you can choose to display the references together or by folder. 7. Click on the reference you want to insert in your report. A preview of how the reference will appear in the text is displayed according to your output style. 8. Click OK to insert the reference in your text. 9. You may at any time insert your reference list in your text. Select Bibliography Options, Insert Bibliography. The reference list will turn up in the location in the text where the cursor is. To move the reference list, click on Remove Bibliography and insert it again on the desired position. 10. Be sure to save your document when you have created your reference list.

7 Cite and create a reference list without Write-N-Cite You can refer and create reference lists without Write-N-Cite with the OneLine/Citeview function. This is necessary when you write your text in Google Docs or Open Office. In RefWorks: click on Cite next to the relevant reference. 1. A new window will open, copy the reference from here and paste it in your document. 2. Before creating a reference list, save your Google docs document on your computer in.docx or.odt format. 3. In RefWorks: to create a reference list, choose Bibliograhpy. 4. Choose Output Style (e.g. LiU Oxford ). 5. Choose Format Paper and Bibliography. 6. Upload your document. 7. Create Bibliography. 8. A new document with the name Final-(document name) will be created. You still use the original document to add new references and to create new reference lists.
