2 Gifted Program Philosophy The Green Local School District is committed to academic excellence and meeting the educational needs of all students. Gifted and talented students are among these students. Because of their unique abilities, they require differentiated educational programs and services that extend and enrich the regular curriculum. In keeping with the district philosophy which states, It is the ultimate goal of The Green Local School District to help each child develop into a critically thinking citizen who can act independently at a personal optimum level within the bounds of social acceptance, we believe that these services must take into account the cognitive, affective and social aspects of the student. Thus, we wish to make provision to work with these students in accordance with their needs and to provide an appropriate education for them so they can reach their greatest potential. This development will benefit both the student themselves, as well as society, since they have much to contribute. 3 GREENWOOD EARLY LEARNING CENTER Grades PK - K The enrichment program at Greenwood School provides the following services: Opportunities for testing for services as follows: *Individual testing of kindergarten students by a psychologist or trained teacher based on referral from classroom teacher and/or parent in the academic areas as well as the arts. Kindergarten enrichment or acceleration options for students based on testing results Differentiated instruction in the kindergarten classroom to meet the needs of the identified students Parent Conferences to discuss student needs and services Computer Instruction in each classroom for enrichment activities and a computer lab for additional instruction After-School Enrichment classes on various topics may be provided for a small fee GREEN PRIMARY SCHOOL Grades 1-2 The Grades One and Two Primary Enrichment Program provides differentiated instruction for identified gifted students in math and/or reading through cluster grouping of high ability grades 1 & 2 math and reading students with classroom teachers who are trained to provide classroom differentiation. The following enrichment and gifted services are offered: Six Hats Thinking Skills Program provides for cluster grouped students in grades 1 and 2 Social/Emotional Services provided in cooperation with the school guidance counselor as needed Testing of students for gifted services each year on an individual and/or group basis. After-school enrichment programs for an additional fee may be provided by classroom teachers, enrichment teachers, or outside presenters

4 KLECKNER ELEMENTARY Grade 3-4 Grades 3 and 4 Enrichment Program consists of cluster grouping of gifted students based on their identified area with teachers who team and who are trained to work with gifted students. Additional services are also provided by certified gifted personnel as follows: Acceleration and enrichment of identified math students in math replacement classes at grades three and four with a gifted math teacher who is trained to meet the students needs in the resource room on a daily basis for one hour each day Reading differentiation in the classroom with additional enrichment programs and services provided one period per week, in grade 3, by the gifted teacher in the resource room such as: Treasure Tree - Grade 3 Social Skills/Reading Program Primary Thinking Skills - Grade 3 Junior Great Books - Grade 3 The gifted specialist at grade 4 who teaches the math replacement classes also teaches the cluster grouped reading classes at grade 4 and provides reading differentiation for those students accordingly Testing for enrichment services based on teacher and parent referrals in the academic areas as well as the arts & creativity Use of technology in the classroom and in computer labs Development of Written Education Plans (WEPs) for those students who are identified as gifted and receiving services according to the State Gifted Standards Parent Conferences to review WEPs and approve gifted services Social/Emotional Services and Programs provided as needed in cooperation with the school guidance counselor Opportunities to participate in contests and competitions such as: Ohio Math League at grade 4 After-School Enrichment Programs for an additional fee may be provided by teachers, enrichment teachers, parents, and/or outside presenters

5 GREEN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL Grades 5-6 The Grades 5 & 6 Gifted Program consists of the following: Enrichment/Accelerated math class and advanced language arts for identified students (Grade 5) Advanced classes in Grade 6 to include: Pre-Algebra and Advanced Math as well as Advanced Language Arts Opportunities to participate in contests and competitions such as the following that have been offered previously: Ohio Math League (Grades 5 & 6) Geography Bee (Grade 6) PTA Reflections Contest (Grades 5 & 6) Art, Music, Drama Contests & Programs (Grades 5 & 6) Computer training and use of technology in the classroom and in computer labs (Grades 5 & 6) Testing for gifted services to include all students in grade 5 and recommended students in grade 6 in the academic areas as well as the arts and creativity Social/emotional programs provided in cooperation with the school guidance counselor as needed (Grades 5 & 6) Development of Written Education Plans for those students who are receiving services according to the State Gifted Standards (Grades 5 & 6) Parent/Teacher Conferences to review WEPs and approve services (Grades 5 & 6) After-School Enrichment Programs for an additional fee may be provided by classroom teachers, gifted teachers, parents, and/or outside presenters.

6 GREEN MIDDLE SCHOOL Grades 7-8 GMS Enrichment Program provides an accelerated and enriched curriculum for identified students. Grade 7 - Algebra, Advanced Math (Pre-Algebra), Advanced Language Arts Grade 8 - Geometry, Algebra, Advanced Language Arts Development of WEPs and conferencing with parents for those students who are receiving services according to the State Gifted Standards Continuous referral and identification of students in math and reading as well as art, vocal/instrumental music, drama, and dance audition for gifted identification. Guidance Services and Programs Use of Technology, through computers in the classroom and labs The following enrichment options are available for grades 7 & 8 unless otherwise noted. Math contests GCCTM Math Tournament grade 7 Math Counts Ohio Math League Laws of Life & Reflections Writing Contest, grade 8 Reading /Writing Festival French and Spanish classes Women in Science Program Drama, Art and Music Enrichment opportunities in Band, Choir/Vocal Music, and Drama Club Geography Bee Junior Mock Trial Summer Camp Invention Jr. Academic Challenge Jr. National Honor Society Award Destination Imagination

7 GREEN HIGH SCHOOL Grades 9-12 Advanced and Honors classes, grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Advanced Placement Courses American History, grade 11 Chemistry, grades Calculus, grade 12 European History, grades Literature and Composition, grade 12 Government, grade 12 Spanish and French Freshman Scholars Program Junior seminar (Assistance with college aid planning and financial aid) Post Secondary Enrollment Options at local colleges and universities, grades 9-12 Seniors to Sophomores Program Guidance Programs and Services Drama, Art, and Music Enrichment Opportunities Career Mentorship Program, grade 11-12, is an educational option offered to all gifted students at GHS to enable them to explore career options and spend time with an area mentor in their chosen field Award & Recognition Programs - Local, State, and National Laws of Life writing contest, grade 11 Academic Challenge, grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Mock Trial Program Bridge Building contest, sponsored by the Summit County Engineers office Polymer Engineering Program
