1 LNDSKRON Densifying the street Österleden The main goal for this project is to show how Landskrona can grow within its borders. I have concentrated only on one part of the city, the stretch between the railway station and the new bus-terminal. Österleden is today a high speed road sweeping past the city centre. My intention is to integrate it with the city by changing its character from a road into a street. This is done by narrowing it down in size, increasing the number of streets it connects with and most important, building new buildings on both sides of it. EXISTING STREETS / CROSSINGS Streets The street grid comes to an abrupt stop when meeting the railroad. The connection between north and south is poor to say the least. Crossings Österleden has today relatively few crossings. This leads to high speed traffic on Österleden and also strengthens its role as a barrier in the city. 2 EXTENDED TROLLEY-US LINE Existing Trolley-bus line The existing trolley-bus line connects the railway-station with the new bus-terminal, streching through the alotment areas in the north and going through the city centre. Extended Trolley-bus line The first step in my proposal is to extend the trolley-bus line from the new bus-terminal back to the railwaystation along Österleden. This new route will be the spine in the development of this area. EXISTING TROLLEY-US LINE EXTENDED TROLLEY-US LINE NEW STREETS ND CROSSINGS / DENSIFIED RES New streets and crossings Some of the new streets are connecting the southern and northern parts, other completes the existing grid. The main idea is to increase the number of crossings with Österleden in order to integrate it with the existing street pattern. Densified areas The areas close to the bus stops are the first ones to develope, from here the development will spread. 3 LNDSKRON IN THE REGION / CONCEPT OF GROWTH Vision In my future vision of Landskrona the city will take advatage of its geographic position between Malmö and Helsingborg. These two cities are larger and have straight connections to Denmark, an opportunity that also Landskrona should benefit from. Landskrona could offer an attractive alternative to live and start companies in, with affordable living and good communications. Strategy Landskrona could use its position between these two nodes in two ways. First, with good commuting possibilities it can provide people with affordable living within reasonable distance from both cities. Second, and even more important, it could offer companies new office and business space right next to the railway station. With the good railway connections in Skåne these could be reached faster than an office in the outskirts of Malmö or Helsningborg. y creating new job-opportunities Landskrona would become more attractive for people to move to. COMMUTING FROM LNDSKRON COMMUTING TO LNDSKRON STRONG EXISTING COMMUTING ROUTS HELSINGÖR COPENHGEN HELSINGORG LNDSKRON The first task would be to develop the station area. dding both new office- and housing space close to the station would attract new companies and residents to Landskrona. n important result of this would also be connecting the station area with the city, today it feels alienated. LUND Growth The city could then continue to grow inwards by filling all the empty spaces inside the city borders. Growing within its existing borders is important for two reasons: First, higher density means better foundation for public transport. Second, the agricultural land surrounding Landskrona is of highest class, well too valuable to be used for low density housing. MLMÖ In this project I show how the ringroad from the station southwards along with Österleden could be densified and developed. This is just one small part of the city, but still it has a huge potential to develop into a more urban form, without lacking green areas, diversity and small town identity. CONCEPT OF GROWTH COMMUTING IN THE REGION Commuting This diagram shows the different movements in the region. The red ones are existing ones that Landskrona could benefit even more from than today. The blue ones will increase with Landskrona offering new attractive business spaces. The green ones will increase when more people move to Landskrona because of affordable housing, even if the familymembers still are able to work in other parts of the region. Landskrona today Landskrona today has a lot of empty spaces within the city. These areas could often be used in a more effective way. With Landskronas desire to grow there are still some pieces of the puzzle to be added Non sustainable growth llowing new low-density housing areas to spread outside the city border is not sustainable. It occupies valuable agricultural land, and makes effective public transport impossible. MIN RES OF DEVELOPMENT Sustainable growth Densifying the city by building within the existing city borders is more sustainable. This doesn t occupy agricultural land and makes public transport more effective. Densifying does not mean the end of greenor open spaces, it is more about using land in a more effective way. 1. The new ferry- and bus terminal The new terminal will form an important node in the city. 2. The former railroad area With the old railway station taken out of use the area formerly used for the tracks can be taken into more effective use. 3. The north side of Österleden etween Österleden and Tranchellsgatan is a strip of unused land, wide enough to use for housing. 4. The station area South of the station is a big undeveloped area. This is the perfect spot for new businesses, but also for new housing development. LUNDS TEKNISK HÖGSKOL SN15 SUSTINLE URN LNDSCPE THOMS HGSTRÖM
4 THE HROUR MEETING THE WTERFRONT The new Marina One of the keypoints in this project is the waterfront. This is the meetingpoint for several crucial systems. This is where the new Ven-terminal and bus-station will be situated. This is also where the new strip of housing meets the sea, along with the green corridor that runs along the former railroad track. This will be the place where people sit and enjoy warm summerdays, either on the sundecks or in front of the new cafeteria. From here you have a wonderful view over the new Marina and the island Gråen. You also have an unique possibility to watch the big ships sail by on their way to the dry dock, so close you can almost touch them. The new strip of housing streching along Österleden will have its worthy endpoint in a new terassed house facing the sea. The ground floor is reserved for commersial use such as restaurants, food store etc. The upper floors are unique appartments, all with their own terrace and sea view. The inner part of the deep building mass is used for car parking. 5 ÖSTERLEDEN DENSIFYING THE STREET SEE PLN 1:100 Österleden Österleden is today a very wide street. Not only is the street very wide, there is also an empty underdeveloped strip of land between Österleden and its parallel street Tranchellsgatan. It also has very few crossings. This leads to high speed traffic. ROW-HOUSE On this part of Österleden I propose densifying the street by a series of changes. On the southern side of the street new housing blocks are to be built. Towards the street shops, kiosks etc can be placed in the ground floor. The upper floors are used for housing and / or office use. These houses are 3-4 storeys high towards Österleden and two storeys high as you move deeper into the block. ROW-HOUSE ROW-HOUSE On the other side of the road, two storeys high rowhouses occupy the former empty strip. The frontside is more urban with entrances to the street and the buildings forming a wall towards the sidewalk. Small private gardens are placed on the backside, giving Tranchellsgatan a cosier touch suitable for this kind of residential street. MIXED USE ÖSTERLEDEN 1:500 MIXED USE MIXED USE ICYCLE PRK SECTION - 1:100 ENCHES SECTION - 1:500 TRNCHELLS SQURE 1:100 Tranchells square The node for this area and the starting point for the evolution of it is the bus stop. To celebrate this an opening in the facades is made giving access to Tranchellsgatan which creates a small public place where people can meet and talk while waiting for the bus. There is nothing fancy about this small square, it is just a calm place beside the Österleden providing people a place to park their bike, sit down and wait for the bus or just rest under the shading trees. The fact that it also serves as the entrance area for some of the appartments adds to the safety during evening- and night-time. In my vision the first thing that meets the visitor is an urban square in an inviting urban context. PVING: LIGHTGRY CONCRETE ND DRK GRNITE The idea is to develop the station area into a more urban environment. This is done by adding new mixed-use buildings around the station square, and also by re-designing the square and giving it a more urban touch. The new mixed use area close to the station will be attractive for both companies and commuters, situated within walking distance from the station. The ground floor in the buildings surrounding the new square will be reserved for smaller businesses, such as cafeterias, lunch restaurants, flowershops, kiosks etc. The square is also the perfect place for summertime outdoor lunches.
