4 From Chef de Mission The Finnish Olympic Committee proudly presents the Finnish Team in European Youth Olympic Festival in Vorarlberg & Liechtenstein: 33 individual top athletes and a World-class boys ice-hockey team. Since 1991, Finnish athletes have won 53 medals in EYOF winter games. 17 Finnish EYOF participants have later quali- ed to the Winter Olympics, and 12 of them have won Olympic medals. Naturally, we want to win ever more medals and improve our overall success, but simultaneously we feel that participating in this wonderful event is a goal as such. We want to send strong teams to EYOF competitions, support our teams with the best possible expertise and inspire participating athletes to pursue their dreams in sports. I wish good luck to all the participants and delegations, Finnish team look forward to share great festivals with you in Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein. Peter Brüll Chef de Mission Team Finland 4

5 Message from Finnish Olympic athletes The best feelings and memories of international top athletes are often related to participating to an international multi-event competition, where athletes from around the globe meet, compete and celebrate together. All the excitement is there, all the expectations are there, and yet you re not alone, but part of a team that carries you, no matter if you fail or succeed. EYOF is one of these events. It offers you a unique chance to reach the joy of sports and togetherness, just like you did as a child when playing outside with your friends. EYOF is an exciting competition, an important milestone at the beginning of an international career. But it is also a chance to enjoy the Olympic spirit and have a good time with people that share a common love for sports. We encourage all the participants to cherish this opportunity and live along these unforgettable days. Be strong, dream big! Saara & Tanja Saara Niemi is a twotime Olympian and Olympic bronze medalist in women s ice-hockey. Tanja Poutiainen is a ve-time Olympian and Olympic silver medalist in women s giant slalom. They both travel to Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein to work as team of cials and sports ambassadors in the Finnish team. 5

7 Wintersports in Finland Finland is covered by snow and ice for ve months in a year. This makes Finland a natural winter sports country. Finnish athletes have won medals at every Olympic Winter Games since their beginning in In the all-time Winter Games medal table Finland currently occupies tenth place with 161 medals 42 gold, 62 silver and 57 bronze. Cross-country skiing has always been considered a national sport in Finland. No wonder then that many of the most successful Olympic athletes have been skiers, such as Veikko Hakulinen, Eero Mäntyranta and Marja-Liisa Kirvesniemi, all three-time Olympic gold medallists. In Sochi 2014 Finland won three Olympic medals in cross-country skiing. Finnish ski jumpers have enjoyed Olympic success since the 1950 s. Matti Nykänen won four gold medals in is Olympic career, including all three in Calgary In Nordic combined Samppa Lajunen won three gold medals in Salt Lake City In Alpine sports Finnish successes have been fewer, which is not surprising for a land with no mountains. Finland s only Olympic medal in Alpine skiing so far is Tanja Poutiainen s silver in women s giant slalom in Finnish freestyle skiers and snowboarders have been more successful. Janne Lahtela won gold in men s moguls in In Sochi 2014 Enni Rukajärvi took silver in women s snowboard slopestyle. The most successful Finnish Olympic winter sports athlete of all time was Clas Thunberg, who won a total ve gold medals in speed skating. Finnish speed skaters have in the past few years returned to the fore at World Championship level. The same holds true in gure skating and biathlon. Ice hockey is the most popular spectator sport in Finland. It is also the only team sport in which Finland has enjoyed medal success. Finland has won two men s World Championship titles (in 1995 and 2011) as well as six men s and two women s Olympic medals.
