Instructor Phone Course Information Course Description This course is designed to develop skill in the use of transcription equipment including transcribing recorded communication quickly and accurately on the microcomputer. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary building, proper punctuation, spelling, letter styles and placement, proofreading, and grammar. Student Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, the student will: Use standard Transcribing Techniques Operate transcription equipment Be familiar with the fundamentals of sentence structure and language principles Be able to use several document formatting styles Demonstrate the ability to format special letter parts, punctuation styles, and special notations Use specific rules of English usage, punctuation, and capitalization Transcribe spelling words that appear in the dictation Transcribe sentences applying the English usage and punctuation principles

2 presented Transcribe letters, memos, two-page letters and memos, and letters with special features Transcribe business and formal reports, minutes of meetings, news releases, tables, etc. Transcribe from office-style dictation Apply correct language arts skills in the preparation of business documents Interpret and apply proofreading marks Demonstrate productive work habits. 3 If this course requires the use of a computer, these are general recommendations for accessing any of the services that Southwest offers on the Web (e.g. My.Southwest, etc.). minimum Pentium IV or higher processor (recommended) SVGA monitor, minimum resolution 800x600 (1024x768 strongly recommended) CD-ROM or DVD drive floppy drive, zip drive, or CD-RW drive Mouse or compatible pointing device at least 512 MB of RAM (recommended) (optional) printer Software Requirements The software listed below is recommended for any student accessing Southwest services through the internet. Your course may have specific software requirements. Windows 7, Vista, XP Mac OS X (up to 10.6) (OS 10.6 recommended) Linux with a Supported Browser Microsoft Edge+ IE 10 & 11: some issues+ Firefox (latest)+ Firefox ESR+ Chrome (latest)+ Current Anti-Virus protection Reliable Internet connection (broadband recommended but not required) Many instructors may require assignments to be submitted using Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word. To learn how to obtain discounted software from Microsoft, visit Assessment and Grading Method of Evaluation Midterm: 25% (test taken on campus); Final Exam: 25% (test taken on campus); Chapter Dictation: 30% - (Ch 6-20, Sec 3, 2% each Chapter); Assessing Essentials Parts I & II: 15% - (Ch 1-20); Assessing Essentials Part III: 5% - (Ch 1-5).

4 Grading Scale below 60 Testing Procedure / Policy There will be a Final Exam which will consist of timed transcription of business documents. There will also be 15 chapter dictation exercises, 5 proofreading exercises and 20 chapter quizzes. Tests and Chapter Assessments may include essay, multiple-choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank and/or other types of questions and production problems. Make up tests are not normally allowed. If a make up test is requested for medical reasons, the instructor may ask for documented proof of why the scheduled test date was missed. Your grade will consist of: Chapter dictations: 40% Quizzes 30% Proofreading 10% Final 20% Major Assignments Assignment Schedule: (The following weeks and assignments are subject to change.)
