APPLIANCE YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM THE APPLIANCE AS SURFACES CAN BECOME HOT TO THE TOUCH. Deep Fat Frying IMPORTANT Use a deep pan. Never fi the pan more than one-third fu of fat or oi. Never use a id on the pan. Important: Oi is a fire risk, do not eave pans containing oi unattended. In the event of a fire, cover the pan with a id and turn OFF the appiance. Smother the fames on the hob preferaby with a fire banket, rather than attempting to remove the pan to the outside. Burns and injuries are caused amost invariaby by picking up the burning pan to carry it outside. Do not hang cothes over the eft hand side of the AGA hand-rai, because the eectrica contros are behind the top eft hand door, and wi prevent easy access to the contros. 3

THE AGA COOKER This appiance is a heat storage cooker with a 13 amp eement which wi keep the temperature of the cooker constant when not in use and return it to constant temperature after use or in accordance with pre-set AIMS programme. The AGA EC3 cooker has three ovens, namey, the Roasting Oven, Baking Oven and Simmering Oven. Griing and frying can be done in the top and foor positions in the Roasting Oven. The AGA is suppied with the foowing accessories: 1 Large roasting tin with gri rack 1 Haf-size roasting tin with gri rack 3 Oven grid sheves 1 Pain shef 1 Toaster 1 AGA book 1 Wire brush A fu description of cooking with the AGA is given in the AGA Book. Fig 1 DESN A 4

OPERATING THE AGA Contros are ocated behind the top eft hand door. Fig. 2 DESN Switch on the AGA s eectricity suppy. Turn the right hand contro knob from the OFF setting to Norma manua contro setting. The cooker wi heat up unti it reaches its Norma operating temperature which is set by the temperature contro knob. (Turn cockwise to increase temperature). To obtain the required Norma Roasting Oven temperature, the contro knob wi need to be set just above hafway. After severa hours the heat indicator on the AIMS handset shoud be within the back band (See Fig. 3). It maybe necessary to adjust the temperature contro knob to achieve this. Aways aow the cooker to stabiise for 4 hours before attempting any further adjustment. When the heat indicator is within the back band, the cooker is at correct working temperature. The purpose of the heat indicator is to show whether the cooker contains the fu amount of stored heat when the cooker is in norma operationa mode. HEAT INDICATOR BLACK BAND - CORRECT AMOUNT OF STORED HEAT Fig. 3 DESN

We recommend that the cooker is run on the Norma manua setting for two days. During cooking the indicator wi drop back beow the band. This is norma and the heat wi be automaticay restored, this coud take up to 2 hours depending on the amount of use. Aso during AIMS LOW and SLUMBER setting, the indicator wi drop back outside of the back band. After the AGA has been Instaed When first switched on, the AGA wi emit an odour for a short whie. This is simpy due to protective oi burning off the hotpates. Wipe the inside of the ids whist the AGA is heating up to avoid a fim of this oi being deposited on the inside of the ids. Aso, condensation may occur on the top and front pate. This shoud be wiped away as soon as possibe. The foowing points are intended to hep in adapting to the AGA stye of cooking during the change-over from a previous non-heat storage cooker. The AGA Book provides a very usefu introduction to the cooker. For most effective operation of the cooker, the foowing points shoud be carefuy observed. 1. Cose the insuating covers whenever the hotpates are not in use. 2. Cean the hotpates reguary with the wire brush. 3. Utensis with fat bases must be used to make perfect contact with the hotpate. 4. Take care when cosing the oven doors, to ift them onto the catch. 5. Cook as much as possibe in the ovens, so that heat is conserved and cooking smes and condensation are reduced. The Roasting Oven can aso be used for griing at the top and shaow frying on the oven foor. Keep the insuated covers down when the hotpates are not in use, so that the heat stored in the cooker is conserved. For optimum cooking performance, use the AGA utensis and cast iron cookware. They have fat bases which give the best contact with the hotpates. The AGA pans can be stacked in the Simmering Oven. This is especiay usefu for steaming vegetabes and keeping sauces warm. Store the Pain Shef out of the AGA. Use it cod in the Roasting Oven to defect the heat from the top of the oven, creating a more moderate oven temperature underneath. It can aso be used as a baking sheet. A guide to AGA cooking is given on Page 7. Ask the AGA Speciaist for an invitation to an AGA demonstration. 6

BAKING OVEN WHEN USING ALL OF THE OVENS AND HOTPLATES TOGETHER FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME i.e. fu mea. In the above case, the Baking Oven temperature may rise, it wi therefore be necessary to adjust the cooking procedure, the foowing suggestions may prove usefu: 1. When pacing the food in the Baking Oven, ensure that the cod Pain Shef is set directy above the dish, for the whoe of the cooking time. 2. In addition it may be necessary to ower the shef position. 3. When baking food, such as very rich fruit cakes, which require a ong period of cooking time, pace the cake on the fourth grid shef position of the oven with the cod pain shef set directy above, for 3/4 hour approximatey. Move the pain shef to the midde of the Simmering Oven. Transfer the cake to this shef and bake unti cooked through. 4. Aternativey, aow the Baking Oven to coo for approximatey 4 hours before using. NOTE: A oose meta perforated pate is positioned in the top of the Baking Oven in order to optimise cooking performance. It must remain in pace at a times whie the cooker is in operation. GUIDE TO AGA COOKING As the AGA is heated differenty from an ordinary appiance, exact conversions are not possibe. Look in the AGA book for a simiar recipe. Beow is a quick guide to oven usage. 8 AIMS CONTROL HANDSET What is AIMS? The AIMS program is fexibe. In short, it means the AGA can seep when you seep and ony operate at norma when you need it. The technoogy is simpe to use and can resut in significant fue savings. The AIMS program can be pre-set, with one or two active periods each day. For exampe in the two event mode, your AGA wi be at norma temperature ready to cook breakfast in the morning, drop down to a ower temperature during the day and then return to norma temperature ready to prepare dinner in the evening. After dinner, the system automaticay enters Sumber mode - the owest temperature. The system can even be set to hoiday mode, which wi keep the AGA on either the owest energy setting Sumber (or off) during seected dates, before automaticay restarting in time for the famiy s arriva back. The AIMS program offers you: Fexibiity Two pre-set active periods each day Hoiday mode Override feature The handset is designed to operate within the kitchen area. When transferring the information from or to the controer aways operate the handset in front of the cooker, this gives the strongest signa. If the handset indicates OFFLINE, press the back button communication ink between the cooker and handset. firmy, this wi activate the Shoud the handset continue to show OFFLINE, aow one minute for the handset to automaticay, re-connect itsef with the cooker. If the above actions fai to cear the probem, refer to section Handset to Base Unit Signa Check on Page 15. Fig. 4 DESN The handset has 10 buttons and a dispay screen. 8

NOTE: If the AIMS handset is unused for an extended period of time, the dispay screen wi automaticay turn off to conserve battery power. REMEMBER: The handset is designed to be operated within the kitchen area. Press firmy any button on the handset to turn the dispay back on, and the Information (Main Menu) Screen is automaticay dispayed. The AIMS Controer handset has four dispay screens:- 1. The Information (Main Menu) screen 2. The Date/Time Setting screen 3. The AIMS Programme screen 4. The Hoiday Setting screen See each section for detais:- The AIMS has one or two programmabe events. The two events programme wi enabe the AGA to be at Norma in the morning, (i.e. to cook breakfast) drop to a ower temperature during the day, and return to Norma in the evening (i.e. to cook dinner) and drop to Sumber ater in the evening and throughout the night. The one event programme wi enabe the AGA to drop to Sumber during the night and return to Norma throughout the day. This wi be shown as Once; or Twice on the AIMS programme screen, (See Fig. 7). The Norma temperature for those two events can be set using the cooker temperature contro knob. The modes in between the events can be set at Low or Sumber depending on the persona preference. If a mistake is made when setting the date or time on any of the screens, use the go back to the previous setting. button to When the button is pressed the oven vent fan wi be switched on and a bue ight wi appear. Uness this shows, the changes wi not have been impemented Fig. 7 DESN This screen shows that the ovens wi be up at Norma temperature between 07:00 and 10:00 the ovens wi then go to the Low mode. The ovens wi come up to Norma once more in that day i.e. at 16:00 unti 19:00. After the evening the system wi automaticay enter Sumber mode its owest setting unti next morning. 11

The exampe on Page 11 shows a typica two event program. Pease note the interva period between the finish time of the first event (10:00) and the start of the second event (16:00) which adds up to a 6 hour interva. If setting intervas shorter than 6 hours ony a imited drop in cooker temperature wi be observed, thereby refecting the AGA heat storage capabiities. In these circumstances energy savings wi be sma and in some instances of cooking preferences, it is favourabe to ater the program to a singe event setting. Boost If cooking is required when the AGA is in the AIMS program i.e. Low or Sumber, you shoud boost the cooking temperature by pressing the button. Boost overrides the next set program and brings the appiance up to Norma temperature. The time taken to reach Norma temperature wi be dependent on the oven temperature at the time of the boost operation, and coud be a number of hours. IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ The AIMS program has to earn! To achieve your desired cooking program the AIMS wi guess the first heat-up time on a newy programmed events, this in most cases resuts in the cooker coming up to temperature ate at its first attempt. The AIMS wi then use this information to caibrate subsequent heat-up times and correct itsef. Any changes to events or norma cooking temperature wi go through the caibration procedure. Spasmodic changes to these settings on a daiy basis wi confuse the AIMS caibration resuting in faied heat-up times. AIMS POINTS TO REMEMBER 1. An AGA contains a arge therma mass of cast iron, consequenty the appiance wi retain its heat and there wi be a ong period of time before there is any noticeabe drop in temperature. For exampe, between morning and evening events it is unikey that an AGA wi fa as ow as the Sumber temperature. Between these two events seecting the Low settings is best. 2. OFF settings are intended for ong periods such as hoidays etc. It is not practica to seect OFF between daiy timed programmes. 3. There is itte advantage in setting two timed events coser than say 6 hours, and it is better to set a singe Norma timed event for the fu period. 4. Aways set the Norma period to match demand, If you are intending to cook for 2 hours, the timed programme must be for a minimum of 2 hours. 5. The AIMS contros earns based on the previous heating cyces. If programmes are constanty changed, it is ikey that AIMS wi not achieve temperature at the desired times. 6. Continuay turning the temperature contro knob up and down on the contro pate wi aso cause AIMS not to foow the programme. 7. When cooking outside the AIMS norma period, aways operate the Boost button or switch the AIMS contro knob to MANUAL. This wi avoid confusing the AIMS heat up timings. 12

AIMS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What do I do if I come home eary and I decide I want to use the AGA at Norma heat? If the AGA is on a Low mode, that is between Norma settings then you can do one of two things. 1. Press the thermometer button on the handset to bring up the Boost function. This wi override the current AIMS programme and wi bring the cooker up to norma working temperature. To remove the Boost function simpy press the thermometer button again. OR 2. Turn the contro switch on the base unit to Manua - but remember to turn it back to the AIMS programme afterwards. The AGA may take a number of hours to reach norma temperature, dependent upon the state of the programme. Cooking during AGA warm-up in AIMS mode This wi resut in the NORMAL target temperature not being reached at the programmed time, the AIMS woud then re-cacuate the warm-up start time thereby bringing the AGA up to the NORMAL target time eary on the next equivaent event. How do I know when the batteries are ow? The battery ife is shown up on the Handset, 3 dark pips indicate a fu battery. Battery ife depends upon usage. What happens if the batteries fai? If the batteries run out, do not worry, the memory settings for the cooker are contained in the Base Station, just put in new 4 x AAA batteries and the Handset wi soon show the correct settings. Does AIMS automaticay change when the cocks change? No, the Handset wi need to be adjusted manuay (See Page 10) each time the cocks change. The handset does not use time in the rea time technoogy. Does AIMS adjust for a eap year? No, the handset wi need to be re-programmed. What happens when there is a power cut? The Base Station memory of the time of day wi not be affected, but if the power cut coincides with the powering up of the AGA this wi be affected - an absence of eectricity means the AGA cannot power up to the mode required unti the eectricity is restored. With regard to the handset, the time and date settings may require re-setting, dependent upon how ong the cooker has been without power. Is the Handset covered by the 5 year warranty? The Handset is covered by the genera AGA 5 year parts warranty, apart from consumabe parts (batteries). If the handset is dropped or damaged, this is not covered. How much does AIMS save on the eectricity bi? Eectric tariffs vary consideraby, dependent upon suppier, however our fied experience has shown that using two Norma periods with Low in between and Sumber overnight, savings up to 20% can be achieved. 14

AIMS HANDSET CARE Operating Distance The Handset wi ony operate in the same room as the appiance and up to a maximum distance of 4 metres from the appiance.
