This system MUST be instaed by a competent person, conversant with domestic pumbing, heating systems and eectrica requirements. As the project wi be inconjunction with a heating appiance, the instaer shoud be registered with GasSafe, OFTEC or HETAS, as appropriate and foow the guidance of the Benchmark Scheme Code of Practice. Trade trraining is offered by AGA. REMEMBER: When repacing a part on this appiance, use ony spare parts that you can be assured conform to the safety and performance specification that we require. Do not use reconditioned or copy parts that have not been ceary authorised by AGA. 2
3 INTRODUCTION The Eco-Connect pane is a pumbing and wiring device to aow an inteigent ink up between a soid fue appiance on an open vented pumbing system, and an automatic appiance such as an oi, gas or peet boier on a cosed system. The soid fue appiance coud be a stove or wood-burning cooker. Priority is automaticay given to taking energy from the renewabe source. At the centre of the pumbing, is a she and tube heat exchanger which aoys heat transfer to take pace from the open vented to the seaed system. There are three pre-wired and pumbed motorised vaves and two pumps, which are powered on or off, to coect the heat from the required source of heat and distribute it to the desired zones (Fig. 1). OPERATION Vave 1 - Part of the open vented circuit. It directs the heat from the soid fue appiance, to either the gravity fow through the cyinder if fow temperature is beow 65 C (Fig. 2) or towards the heat exchanger under pumped circuation (Figs. 3 and 4), when above 65 C. Vave 2 - Part of the seaed circuit. This vave coects the output from either the heat exchanger, boier, or a mix of both. Where there is no demand for heating, but the soid-fue appiance is above 65 C. From port A and the heat exchanger (Fig. 3), or if there are demands for heating or hot water, soey from the automatic boier (when soid-fue appiance is beow 65 C) using port B (Fig. 5) or in a mid position, mixed mode (when soid-fue appiance is between C) using both ports A and B (Fig. 6) or soey from the soid-fue appiance, when it is above 71 C (Fig. 7), or the Eco function is seected. Vave 3 - Contros the pumped output to the domestic hot water cyinder. Pump 1 - Circuates the water from the soid fue appiance. Pump 2 - Extracts the heat from the heat exchanger into the seaed system. Both the pumps operate in parae, pushing water through the vented and seaed paths of the heat exchanger. At the heart of Eco-Connect, is a micro processor controed wiring centre with an LCD dispay to provide feedback to the customer. The wiring centre takes inputs from programmers and thermostats, for up to four heating zones and one domestic hot water zone and provides signas to the externa motorised vaves controing the fow to these heating zones. The wiring centre aso provides votage-free contacts T32, T33, giving a switch oop to command the automatic boier to fire as required. 3

8 Soid Fue Appiance SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS This can be a stove/roomheater approved to EN13240, with a maximum boier output of 12kW burning either wood or minera fue. It must incorporate a water-sensing thermostat and be instaed in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. Aternativey a woodburning cooker may be used, approved to EN12815, instaed in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. Automatic Boier Typicay this woud be a reguar oi or gas-fired boier, but coud be a centra-heating cooker where the boier output is fuy controabe, e.g. modes with twin burners. Certain wood peet boiers coud be used where these are fuy automatic. Appiances must be CE approved. Combination boiers are not suitabe. Such appiances shoud be simpe on/off products, requiring a singe on mains votage command signa, without sophisticated integra energy management contros. If in doubt, refer to AGA Trade Technica Hep-ine or boier manufacturer. There is no imit on the automatic boier output, but it shoud be matched to meet the demands of the combined heat and hot water demands. We recommend that the thermostat be set to approximatey 80 C. It must be an appiance designed to work on a fuy pumped system ony. Therefore a circuating pump (not suppied with Eco-connect package), wi need to be fitted to either the boier fow or return pipe. Where pump overrun faciities are required by the manufacturer, the circuation pump must continue to be controed from the boier. In this case, a suitabe pump by-pass pipe between the boier fow and return must be provided, fitted with an automatic pressure vave. The mains eectrica suppy to the boier must be fed from the same isoator as Eco-Connect. The appiance manufacturers instaation instructions must be adhered to. Hot Water Storage Cyinder The cyinder must be of the open vented type, seaed or unvented types are not suitabe for use with Eco- Connect. It must be abe to accept an input by gravity circuation from the soid fue appiance. The cyinder must have manufacturers appied insuation. A thermostatic bending vave shoud be fitted on the draw-off suppy to the taps. Two basic types of cyinder can be considered suitabe. Muti-coi indirect or Therma store. Storage capacity wi depend on a number of factors, such as size of househod, number of bathrooms and the number of energy sources. Typicay 200 itres coud be considered as the minimum, but shoud be increased if say, Soar therma panes are aso to be incorporated. Refer to equipment manufacturers instructions. Feed and Expansion Tank (Soid Fue Appiances) As with any soid fue appiance instaation, the F and E tank may have to cope with a boiing over or Pitching situation, particuary in the event of a power-cut, when temperatures of 100 C coud be experienced. Consequenty it must have a minimum capacity of 200 itres, be heat-resistant (>110 C), adequatey supported and incorporating a copper foat and overfow pipework. The soid-fue appiance must have its own F and E tank, cod-feed and open vent pipe with no intervening vaves. Pumbing - Genera New and existing pumbing systems must be fuy fushed out and refied with an appropriate corrosion inhibitor. Inhibitor eves shoud be checked at 5 year intervas. Excessive amount of PTFE thread tape shoud not be used, and care taken not to aow strands to enter the Eco-Connect pipework. Where possibe pipework shoud be insuated to conserve energy, particuary in the vicinity of Eco-Connect. 8
9 System Design (See Figs. 9 and 10) These show typica system ayouts, athough for carity certain components are ommited, such as drain vaves, hot water feed-tank etc. In a cases the pipework between the Stove, Eco-Connect and the cyinder must be aid out so as to permit gravity circuation for sumbering conditions. A minimum vertica rise of at east 1 metre between the stove and Eco-Connect shoud achieve this. A pipe connections on Eco-Connect are 28mm. Up to four heating zones can be controed. Zone 1 is aso automaticay used as the heat dump in the event of the soid fue appiance overheating. An underfoor heating circuit is idea for zone 1, or if radiators are used, they shoud be be abe to hande 50% of the soid fue appiance output. Ony ockshied vaves shoud be fitted in this circuit. Direct cod water injection is not acceptabe as a safety measure. Fig. 9 shows a Muticoi indirect cyinder, with a woodburning stove inked to an automatic oi-fired centra heating cooker, optionay aso served by Soar therma coectors. The stove is vented with its own F and E tank and the cooker/boier is on a seaed system A is the optiona coi from the soar coectors on a seaed circuit with its own pump sensors and contro station. B Is the gravity coi from the stove under sumbering conditions. C Is the pumped coi served by the stove (through the heat exchanger) and/or automatic boier. D Is the thermistor T3. It is operationa when pumped circuation is taking pace, but with no DHW and imits the cyinder temperature to a maximum of 65 C. It shoud be ocated approximatey one-third of the way down and ideay fitted in a pocket or snugy under the insuation. E Is the reguar cyinder thermostat (not suppied with Eco-Connect). It shoud be ocated immediatey above the pumped coi. F Are the optiona sensors for the soar input H Is the automatic boier system pump (not suppied with Eco-Connect). Fig. 10 shows a typica Therma store cyinder using heat from a wood burning cooker, and an automatic oi or gas fired boier with Soar input. A Is the optiona coi from the soar coector on a seaed circuit with its own pump sensors and contro station. B Is the pumped coi served by the stove (through the heat exchanger) and/or automatic boier. C Gravity connections, using the main body of water in the cyinder to absorb heat under sumbering conditions. D Is the thermistor T3. It is operationa when pumped circuation is taking pace, but with no DHW demand and imits the cyinder temperature to a maximum of 65 C. It shoud be ocated approximatey two-thirds of the way down and fitted in snugy under the insuation in contact with the wa and the cyinder. E Is the reguar cyinder thermostat (not suppied with Eco-Connect) It shoud be situated above the pumped coi, approximatey one-third down. F Are the optiona sensors for the soar input. 12 Eectrica Suppy See Figs. 11 and 12. Wiring externa to Eco-Connect must be instaed by a competent person in accordance with current Nationa Wiring Reguations and any oca reguations. The appiance is suppied for 230V 50Hz and is fitted with an interna fuse rated at 3 amp. A pre-wired mains inet cabe is provided for connection into an adjacent fused doube poe switch having contact separation of at east 3mm. This shoud be fused at 3 amp. We woud recommend that the suppy be protected by a 30mA Residua Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB). As the switching of the automatic boier is achieved internay through Eco-Connect, it is essentia that the mains eectrica feeds to the boier, any anciary contros and equipment and Eco-Connect must be taken from the same isoator to avoid the danger of eectrica shock. An additiona isoator wi normay be required adjacent to the automatic boier. Externa Contros (See Fig. 11) Heating - Separate time and temperature contros with appropriate motorised vaves shoud be provided for each heating zone, wired back to the Eco-Connect Pane. Hot Water - Time contro shoud be provided and a cyinder thermostat wi be required, typicay set to 65 C for a norma cyinder or 80 C for a therma store. (This is in addition to the cyinder temperature thermistor suppied with Eco-Connect). No DHW motorised vave is required as this is aready fitted on the Eco-Connect Pane. The demand to fire to the automatic boier is provided votage free contacts T31, T32 on Eco-Connect. Eco- Connect therefore provides Boier Interock. If the automatic boier requires pump overrun faciities, the system pump shoud be wired directy to the boier. Fig. 11 shows the schematic arrangements. 14 Method of fixing thermistors Fig 13 Fig 14 Fitting of thermistor sensors The unit is suppied with four thermistors, that monitor the temperature of the key water suppy pipes to and from the unit, thus aowing the main processor to divert heat through the reevant vaves as required. The thermistors are positioned and secured as foows (refer to Figs 12, 13 and 14). The thermistors are coour-coded to aid connections. T1 (RED) - Fow pipe on soid fue unit (as cose as possibe to the unit). T2 (BLUE) - Return pipe on soid fue unit (as cose as possibe to the unit). T3 (BLACK) - Against cyinder snugy under insuation, two-thirds down. T4 (WHITE) - Fow pipe to heating and cyinder immediatey after vave 2 (Factory Fitted). For best performance TH1 and TH2 shoud be ocated, as cose as possibe to the soid fue appiance. The thermistors are suppied with a 1.4 metre ength and can be extended, using standard heat resistant 0.5mm 2 eectrica cabe, with a connection made using a strip connector (cabe consists of two cores with no particuar poarity or orientation to connecting the cores). Each thermistor is suppied with a mounting bracket, that cips over the water pipe hoding the thermistor against the pipe, this bracket is to be secured in pace using the O- Ring provided. The cip shoud then be wrapped tighty in a piece of auminium foi tape to provide best therma transfer from the pipe to the thermistor. INSTALLATION It is important that a fu site survey be carried out to confirm the suitabiity for Eco-Connect. Instaation and commissioning must be by competent persons. Reference must aso be made to the specific requirements contained within the boier and stove manufacturers instructions. Athough the instaation of Eco-Connect is not a notifiabe work to the oca authority, the instaation of the associated appiances wi be. 1. Location and Mounting the System Before mounting the Eco-Connect system, consideration shoud be given as to the exact ocation to aow for the foowing: 14
15 Sufficient space shoud be aowed for access and to ensure adequate air fow over the unit. Adequate room for fitting of unit and anciary pipework - The unit measures 800mm high x 500mm wide and it is recommended to provide a 1200mm high x 1000mm wide area for fitting of the system to aow for adequate room for working on the unit. Soid wa construction to mount system which is capabe of supporting its weight (18.5 kg). Provision for connection of water pipes to soid fue appiance so that the gravity feed circuit to the cyinder from the appiance is not affected. Provision for connection of water pipes to automatic boier. Provision for connection of water pipes to desired zones & cyinder. Provision for connection of eectrica feeds to automatic boier. Provision for connection of eectrica feeds to zona heating contros. Provision for routing of thermistor probes. Wherever possibe, adjacent exposed pipework shoud be insuated. Positioning of Eco-Connect is critica in reation to the soid fue appiance and the hot water cyinder so as to ensure gravity circuation. A minimum vertica rise of at east 1 metre, between the stove and Eco-Connect shoud achieve this. This means that Eco-Connect wi be at east 1 metre above the stove, but this may need to increase if there are ong runs of near horizonta pipes. The connection to the gravity coi on the cyinder must be at a sufficient height, i.e. above the outet from Eco-Connect V1, to aow gravity circuation and if necessary an air-reease vave may be required or an additiona open vent pipe. To make it easier to accommodate the pipework connections, Eco-Connect can be handed by turning the unit over. To do this, requires the contro box to first be unfastened from the heat exchanger (four screws accessed internay) and the box re-mounted upside down. The position of the PCB dispay wi aso have to be reversed, by unscrewing the two pastic screws securing the dispay to the PCB. The dispay can then be carefuy unpugged and fitted into its new position on the aternative row of terminas. Re-secure with the pastic screws. The unit is mounted to the wa so that it is oriented with the pumps beow the wiring centre with it fixed to the wa using three raw pugs and fixings screws using the three fixing points on top and bottom edges of the wiring centre case and side of heat exchanger. The unit is aso suppied with three pipe support brackets which can be fixed to the water pipes for added support. The brackets are mounted to the wa using the section of threaded bar suppied, with the bar being cut as required for each bracket. 2. Pumbing New and existing pumbing systems must be fuy fushed out and refied with an appropriate corrosion inhibitor. Inhibitor eves shoud be checked at 5 year intervas. Excessive amount of PTFE thread tape shoud not be used and care taken not to aow strands to enter the Eco- Connect pipework. There are seven separate water pipe connections to be made to the Eco-Connect unit, Fow and return to soid fue unit Fow from automatic boier 15
16 Fow to radiator circuits Fow to coi of cyinder on seaed system Fow to cyinder coi or thermastore on open system. (This provides gravity circuit from soid fue unit to cyinder) Return to heat exchanger. Coupes to radiator return, cyinder return and boier return pipes. Sumber Conditions In the event of the fow temperature from the soid fue appiance exceeding 65 C heat is transferred through the heat exchanger and is pumped to the DHW cyinder. If the DHW temperature exceeds 65 C, this route is cosed and the heat is dispersed into heating Zone 1 by defaut. When designing the heating system, this defaut heat dump shoud be borne in mind and Zone 1 is idea to serve an underfoor heating zone. A zone serving a singe radiator is unikey to prove sufficient for a heat dump. Typicay the Zone 1 heat dump shoud be capabe of handing at east 6 kw, but this wi depend on the rated output of the soid fue appiance. Radiator vaves on this circuit must be of the ock-shied type to avoid accidenta cosure by the owner. Direct cod water injection is not acceptabe as a safety measure in the UK. Fi and test system for water eaks. COMMISSIONING Check that the Eco-Connect pumps are set to the medium speed and that the isoating vaves are fuy opened. Check that temperature sensors are in position. Check that cabe strain bushes are tight. Press and hod the Eco button for 20 seconds. Eco-Connect wi go through a short sequence of checking the reay and pump operations, with an appropriate dispay. Light soid fue appiance and with no demands for hot water or heating confirm that gravity circuation takes pace to cyinder. Aow fow temperature to increase unti automatic pumped circuation commences at 65 C. Hot water shoud then be pumped to cyinder. Ca for hot water and heating, check that mixed mode occurs and that the auto boier fires. Expain operation to owner, stressing the importance of correct operation of the soid fue appiance and not aowing over-firing to take pace. Leave user s instructions with the owner. Eco-Operation The operation of the Eco-Connect is automatic, biased to take energy from the renewabe source, topped up from the automatic boier. This can be overridden by pressing the Eco button. Press the Eco button once and the automatic boier is hed OFF for 6 hours. Press the Eco button twice in quick succession, and the automatic boier is OFF permanenty unti the Eco button is pressed again. The automatic operation is aid out in the fow chart beow To return to automatic operation, press the Eco button once more. This feature is usefu for when it is anticipated that, heat energy wi subsequenty become avaiabe ater in the day. e.g. from a soar pane or that the stove wi be it in the afternoon/evening. 16
17 Safety In the event of a power faiure or circuating pump faiure the water in the stove coud reach temperatures up to 100 C if the stove s thermostat aso mafunctions or the appiance is not operated correcty. At these temperatures pitching wi take pace through the feed and expansion tank. If this occurs, check the stove thermostat is working correcty to so as to cose off the air-suppy. Aow the fire to go out, unti power is restored. On resumption of power, Eco-Connect automaticay resets itsef without user intervention. Controer Logic * Is there a ca for heat to hot water or heating? A ca for heat is present when 230V is received on Termina 3, 7, 11, 15 or 17. * Is there usabe heat in the stove? There is considered to be usabe heat in the stove when T1 and T2 exceeds 65 o C. The ca for heat from the stove remains present unti T2 exceeds T1 or unti T1 and T2 are both ess than 45 o C. * Can the stove suppy the overa demand? The stove is considered to have adequate suppy of heat when T1 is greater than T4, with T4 greater than 70 o. * Is there excess heat in the stove? Excess heat is present when T1 exceeds 85 o C. Reay Functions - See Fig. 14 To test reay operations. Press and hod in the Eco button, then switch on mains suppy. Each reay wi operate in turn. There are 8 reays ocated on the PCB, each controing separate functions of externa components. An LED iuminates when the reay is operated and is usefu for faut finding. As these checks require the power to be turned on, take care of exposed terminas. Reay 1 drives Vave 1 to the mid-position. Live on T20, White wire. Reay 2 drives Vave 1 beyond mid-position to the fuy open position. Open to port A. Live on T21, Grey wire. Vave 1 routes heat from the soid fue appiance towards either the gravity feed to the cyinder or through the heat exchanger. Consequenty both reays 1 and 2 shoud operate together as there is no need for Vave 1 to stop in the mid-way position. These ony operate when the stove fow is above 65 o C. Reay 3 drives Vave 2 to the mid-position. Live ON T23, White wire (Mixed mode). This occurs when there is a timed demand for heating and/or hot water and the stove is above 65 o C. Reay 4 drives Vave 2 beyond mid-position to the fuy open position Live ON T24, Grey wire (Renewabe source ony). This occurs when there is a timed demand for heating and/or hot water and the stove is above 70 o C, or the Eco function is seected. Reay 5 drives Vave 3, for the pumped hot water circuit. Live on T26. This occurs if the stove is above 65 o C, cyinder beow 65 o C, OR time-cock is caing for hot water. Reay 6 contros the Eco-Connect pumps. They are wired in parae and so come on together. Live on T28 and T30. This occurs whenever the stove is above 65 o C. 17
18 Reay 7 contros the Automatic boier, cosing the oop between T32 and T33. Whenever there is a demand for heating or hot-water and the stove is beow 70 o C. Reay 8 is the dumped contro. This puts a ive feed to the heating zone 1 externa motorised vave on T2, overriding any other time or temperature contro on this zone. It ony operates if the cyinder is satisfied, yet there is sti heat to be ost from the soid fue appiance. Fig 14 18
