In the years to come, we will have fewer institutions of higher education with better resources to take charge of their education and research. New institutional structures will be in place by But don t wait until 2012 to make your way here. We have a lot to offer already, as you will find on the next pages. Welcome to Finland! 21 University of Tampere A multifaculty university with a strong focus on both education and research The University of Tampere is one of the largest and most competitive universities in Finland. The city of Tampere itself takes pride in its lively cultural life, beautiful natural surroundings, and is also a major centre for new technology. The University maintains a close relationship with the city, its trade and industry and cultural circles, and with society at large. Our origins as a School of Social Sciences are still evident in our current curriculum, where social and communication sciences combine with other disciplines. To prepare students for a successful working life, we offer a flexible degree system in most fields, with a main subject and a free choice of minor subjects in the degree. We have been acknowledged for our teaching and research achievements in different fields both nationally and internationally. The recent recognitions include the European Research Council Grant for mitochondrial research. There are many options for international students to choose from, starting from a wide variety of course units taught in English and including a number of Master s degree programmes. Departments participate actively in curriculum development projects with their partner universities. The joint degree projects also include the Erasmus Mundus Master s Programmes in Higher Education, and Theatre and Drama Research. Such exchange programmes as Erasmus, FIRST, ISEP and Nordplus, and active international contacts with some 30 bilateral partner universities offer a world of opportunity to incoming students from all corners of the world. 22 University of Turku Ecological economists and entrepreneurial humanists for the future world The University of Turku is an ambitious, researchled university with internationally acknowledged expertise from humanities to medicine and natural sciences. We have six faculties and ten special units such as the Turku Centre for Biotechnology and the Turku PET Centre, both worldwide acknowledged in their fields of research. In 2010 the University of Turku will merge with the neighbouring Turku School of Economics. This will strengthen our national and international position as a significant multidisciplinary research university with outstanding curricula, extensive business competence and effective capitalisation of innovations. What is needed in the future world is creative problem-solving and thinking out-of-the-box. The aim and ambition of the new University of Turku is to provide students with a high-standard, multidisciplinary education which enables them to understand and develop the multicultural and multidimensional world around them. Our students are already able to tailor their personal study plans according to their future ambitions in business or in research. The University is located in the active student city of Turku and close to the unique nature and archipelago of Southwest Finland. The campus comprises both old and new buildings in the heart of the city. It provides a modern yet cosy learning environment where all the facilities and services are within easy reach. Thanks to the friendly atmosphere, outstanding student services and an active student union, students feel at home from the very beginning of their studies. This will strengthen our national and international position as a significant multidisciplinary research university with outstanding curricula, extensive business competence and effective capitalisation of innovations. In shaping the future, the Turku School of Economics produces and applies business knowledge and fosters entrepreneurship. We conduct both basic and applied research, and offer graduate, postgraduate and continuing education. Expert consulting services are a key part of our remit. Our core area of expertise is business studies, which comprises accounting and finance, management and organisation, marketing, international business, IT management, and economics. Other areas in which the School has specialist resources are European studies, small and medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurship, international business and logistics, and futures studies. A high standard of research is maintained not only by the departments within the school but also by the special units such as the Finland Futures Research Centre, Business and Innovation Development BID, the Centre for Research and Education CRE, and our Pori Unit.
