The Nobel Prize is an international award administered in Stockholm. Four researchers from Stockholm University have received the Nobel Prize and a fifth has been awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. In 2011 Stockholm University alumnus and honorary doctor Tomas Tranströmer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Several of the University s researchers participate in the Nobel Committees, which decide the laureates of the Nobel Prizes. 4 Fees Citizens of countries within the EU/EEA, and Switzerland are exempt from both application and tuition fees for higher education in Sweden. Applicants do however need to submit a certified copy of their passport in order to prove citizenship. Citizens from countries outside the EU/EEA, and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees to study at Swedish higher education institutions. The application fee is SEK 900 for applicants with a citizenship from a country not within the EU/EEA, or Switzerland. The tuition fee for full-time studies for students with a citizenship from a country not within the EU/EEA, or Switzerland varies from SEK 90,000 to SEK 140,000 per year depending on the subject. Scholarships Stockholm University administers a number of scholarships aimed at talented students from countries outside the EU/EEA, or Switzerland. These scholarships are in effect a tuition fee waiver. Students with citizenship from a country not within the EU/EEA, or Switzerland may apply for various government scholarship schemes. The Swedish Institute administers a number of these scholarships, all directed at different parts of the world outside the EU/EEA, or Switzerland. Cost of living and accommodation Students are responsible in finding their own accommodation and should do so prior upon arrival. Quality of life in Stockholm is high and as a consequence of this the general cost of living is quite expensive. Be prepared to pay a higher price for food, drinks, clothing, and electronics.
