2 TEACHING AND RESEARCH SINCE : teaching begins at the Technical School of Helsinki The first director: chemist Anders Olivier Saelan 1872: the Polytechnic School 1879: the Polytechnic Institute 1904: there are over 400 students of technology 1908: University status is granted, renamed Helsinki University of Technology 1955: the move to Espoo begins 1964: the main building is completed (Alvar Aalto) 2008: TKK celebrates 100 years as a university
3 MISSION The basic task of Helsinki University of Technology - TKK is to conduct scientific research to provide top-level teaching linked with research and to promote education in science and the arts. TKK fosters freedom in science, art and teaching. It operates in fields in which research has both scientific and technological significance, and its activities support Finland s success in the international economy.
