A dense network of 1,695 km of motorways linked to the Swiss and Italian networks. Three major communities (Lyon, Clermont and Grenoble-Alpes universities) gather those various academic institutions. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has 305,000 students and 14.7% of French ingineers. 16.7% of the companies and 19.7% of research based French centers engaged into Industrial PhD programs (CIFRE) are located in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is involved in 15 competitiveness clusters of the 71 projects selected in France. Two regional projects of research and technological development (international technological innovation campuses), Lyon Bioaster and Nanoélectronique (Grenoble) have been selected for the national program Investing for the future. Companies in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes spend an average 6.5 billion euros (2013) in R&D, worth 14% of the national spending or 2.67% of the regional GDP. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is ranked fourth among the regions of the European Union for the number of European patent applications. 6 ECONOMIC FABRIC In terms of GDP, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the second French region and the fourth region in the European Union. It has a solid industrial base as well as a substantial tertiary sector, with strong tourism activity. The region is well endowed with centres of economic decision-making, making it attractive to foreign capital. At the heart of the economic infrastructure, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry represent more than 315,000 industrial, commercial and service establishments. 11 Main industrial branches Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a major industrial area in terms of what it contributes to the value added of French industries as well as the welcome intermediate goods and equipment industries being highly represented, and is widely open to export. In 2013, a total of 5.83 billion euros was spent on civil engineering projects in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The total turnover of the building industry amounted to billion euros. Despite the tendency of business hubs to cluster, sales outlets are spread over a large area of the regional territory (2,926 municipalities count at least one shop, corresponding to 70% of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes municipalities), strongly contributing to the quality of life of its inhabitants. 15 Main activities in the tertiary sector The service industries play a predominant role in terms of value added and employment. The region notably distinguishes itself by its production of quality wines, the richness of its orchards, its cereals production and cheese specialties. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has the second most important concentration of organic farms in France. 18
