Research and innovation Source: Department of Education Among Rhône-Alpes specialities: computer science, electronic, life sciences and health (biotechnology), chemistry and materials, physics, mathematics... Rhône-Alpes is involved in 16 competitiveness clusters among the 67 projects accepted by the government in july competitiveness clusters in Rhône-Alpes obtained an international label. Rhône-Alpes is the Region with the ninth largest number of patents in high-tech sectors filed in the European Union. Patents: 2,106 or 12.2% of the total for France. ANVAR grants: 38.8 M or 15.3% of the total for France. Transport - Communication Sources: ANVAR and INPI 2004 At the crossroads of Europe's main communication routes, Rhône-Alpes is serviced by the following excellent facilities: Lyon-Saint Exupéry international airport (6.22 million passengers in 2004, 76 regular lines in winter and 74 in summer) and the Annecy, Chambéry, Grenoble, Saint-Etienne and Roanne airports; 14 TGV (high speed train) stations and seasonal services (22.9 million passengers in 2004); a dense network of 1,337 km of motorways linked to the Swiss and Italian networks. 5 Economic fabric In terms of GDP, Rhône-Alpes ranks second in France and seventh in the European Union. The Region has a sound industrial base, a rich tertiary sector and a thriving tourist industry. The regional economy is also characterized by a structural foreign trade surplus. With close to 3,300 head offices of large and medium-sized firms, Rhône-Alpes can be considered as an economic decision-making centre. It is particularly attractive to foreign firms. The Rhône-Alpes CCI s represent more than 210,000 industrial, commercial and service businesses. A quarter of the regional added value derives from this sector, five points more than the national average. The Region is a leader in several growth areas, including digital technology, health, materials, environmental protection and energy. In 2003, a total of 3.34 billion euros was spent on civil engineering projects in the Rhône-Alpes region. The total turnover of the building industry amounted to billion euros. Rhône-Alpes counts 2.83 million of houses and appartments. More than half of all start-ups are in this sector. Rhône-Alpes has an extensive offer of services for business (engineering, computing, temporary work, etc.), owing to the density of its economic fabric. The region is also one of France s main centres as regards transport and logistics. In terms of number of visits, Rhône-Alpes is number one in tourism in France. Tourist attractions includes: the largest skiing area in the world with over 200 resorts (77% of the national turnover for the ski-lifts); rural tourism: 2 national parks, 6 regional nature reserves and 35,000 hectares of natural and artificial lakes; health tourism:16 spas and 7 health resorts; urban, gastronomic and cultural tourism, with 200 festivals, the largest number of events of this kind in the country; business tourism, with 30 towns and 700 hotels with conference facilities. Lyon ranks third in France as regards hosting of international conferences.
