Source: Department of Education Research and innovation The region boasts strengths in many fields of research: health and biotechnologies, the environment, chemistry and materials, digital technology, physics, nanotechnology, power, etc. Rhône-Alpes is involved in 15 competitiveness clusters of the 67 projects selected in France. Three of them are or will soon be on a worldwide scale. Rhône-Alpes is ranked tenth among the regions of the European Union for the number of European patent applications. 6 Economic fabric In terms of GDP, Rhône-Alpes is the second French region and the sixth region in the European Union. It has a solid industrial base as well as a substantial tertiary sector, with strong tourism activity. The region is well endowed with centres of economic decision-making, making it attractive to foreign capital. At the heart of the economic infrastructure, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry represent more than 246,000 industrial, commercial and service establishments. 11 Main industrial branches Rhône-Alpes is a major industrial area in terms of what it contributes to the value added of French industries as well as the welcome it gives to establishments in this sector. Its industry is diversified, with intermediate goods and equipment industries being highly represented, and is widely open to export. In 2007, a total of 4.74 billion euros was spent on civil engineering projects in the Rhône-Alpes region. The total turnover of the building industry amounted to 15.3 billion euros. Despite the tendency of business hubs to cluster, sales outlets are spread over a large area of the regional territory, strongly contributing to the quality of life of its inhabitants. 15 Main activities in the tertiary sector The service industries play a predominant role in terms of value added and employment. They represent more than one in two business creations. Rhône-Alpes offers companies a wide range of services (engineering, computer services, temporary work, etc.) linked to the density of the economic infrastructure. It is also one of the main French hubs for transport and logistics. Tourism contributes to the development of services to private individuals. It is the region of France most visited by the French themselves. The region offers a wide and rich variety of centres of interest catering for all tastes: sport tourism: Rhône-Alpes boasts the largest equipped skiable area in the world, with more than 150 resorts producing almost 80% of the national turnover in skilifts; green tourism, favoured by its 2 national parcs, 6 natural regional parcs and 35,000 hectares of lakes and other stretches of water; health tourism, with its 15 spas and 7 climatic resorts; urban, gastronomical and cultural tourism : with more than 480 festivals, the region offers a wide range of events; business tourism: with 30 congress towns, Lyon is the second best equipped French city for holding international congresses.
