1 CER340: Soil Mechanics and Foundaion Design Ari Perez Westeros Design Project Introduction King Aerys of House Targaryen, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm having recently taken the Iron Throne wishes to reinforce the security of several important structures in his realm. To do so, he plans to build square, 4 story high stone watchtowers near the structures he wishes to protect (see Figures 1 and 2). However, as geotechnical equipment is very rare in Westeros, he lacks the necessary soil data to design the foundations for his watchtowers. As the rest of the design is complete, the lack of soil data is his only delay in completing his project. Maester Miles Traer of Stanford has produced a geological report and history of Westeros 1. With this as the only source of information, His Grace King Aerys has selected talented engineers to produce a foundation design. As one of those engineers, you have been assigned a structure to protect. Table 1 summarizes all the locations being protected across Westeros. Table 1 - Summary of Regions to be Protected with Watchtowers House Region City Stark The North Flint's Finger Tully The Riverlands Riverrun Martell Dorne Sandstone Salt Shore Arryn The Vale Mountains of the Moon In order to ensure quality work, King Aerys has sent you to The Citadel in Oldtown so that you may gain the knowledge necessary for the preparation of a final geotechnical report. Upon completion of the project, you will be inducted into the Westeros Holistic Engineering Design Operation Nation (WHEDON). The geotechnical report should contain estimates for all important geotechnical engineering properties (see Table 2) and a design for the watchtower foundation, as well as other information you deem appropriate. In order to support your estimates of the geotechnical properties, you need to keep a detailed record of your reasoning to arrive at these estimate values. You should keep this record in a design journal. WHEDON formatting requirements specify that design journals should be kept as a double entry journal. After finishing each lesson cluster, you should write a new entry in the journal, writing down your deductive process in the left entry and summarizing the geotechnical soil property value estimates in the right entry. This may be done using the left and right 1 Available at bin/wordpress/game- of- thrones- geology/ last accessed 4/Jan/2015.
2 pages of an open notebook, or with the Microsoft Word template provided (Figure 3). You will need to present this journal along with the final report. You may amend your initial journal estimates at any time if you wish to do so; however a journal entry will be required detailing the reason for the amendment and the updated estimate. This journal will be periodically checked for completion (but not for correctness). The checkpoint dates are listed in Table 2. His Grace wishes you the best of luck, and wishes to remind you that The Wall is always in need of engineers that have fallen out of favor in King s Landing to aid in repairs.
