3 Danish Bid for 2011 Goalball European Championships Men and Women The Danish National Paralympic Committee hereby seeks to host the 2011 European Championships, combined for Men and Women. 4 Hosting the European Championships in Denmark The Danish tradition for Goalball has been very strong both on the female and male side. Denmark would like to move this legacy on to the next generation of Goalball players in Denmark, and the 2011 IBSA Goalball European Championships is an important step in this development. Denmark has a growing number of very young players to whom it will be a great experience to attend these championships and find encouragement to pursue a sporting career in Goalball throughout their lives. The goals of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) are therefore quite clear: - Ensure the legacy of Goalball in Denmark is preserved among the youngest players - Boost the recruitment of new Goalball players. - Give the young Goalball players of Denmark an experience for life. The LOC will furthermore arrange a completely new side event to the European Championships. A youth camp were new advanced training techniques will be tested. All the participating nations will have the chance to send a youth team to this event which will take place near the European Championship venue. Please see appendix 1 and 2 for more detailed information about this fantastic new initiative. The 2011 Championships will have a strong partner within the Danish organization for the visually impaired (DBS). DBS is an independent private organization, organized and led by people who are blind or severely visually impaired. The association s purpose is to protect and support blind and partially sighted people s strong interests, to ensure equality with other citizens in society and the possibility of self-determination over their own lives. In 2011 DBS will celebrate its 100 Year jubilee. Therefore the NPC Denmark sees the 2011 European Championships as an additional and fantastic opportunity to run a well organized and successful goalball event that will help create awareness and understanding for DBS daily work. All together it is the goal of the LOC to establish a well and efficiently arranged 2011 IBSA Goalball European Championships, which will stand as a foundation and an example for later championships in Goalball. 3

5 Proposed dates and competition schedule NPC Denmark would like to host the 2011 European Men and Women Championships in the period 17 th October to 23 rd October The teams will arrive on the 17 th of October and departure on the 23 rd of October. These dates, week 42, are during the Danish school autumn holiday and are therefore, for numerous reasons, perfect. It is easier to find volunteers and competition officials, the accommodation is cheaper outside the high season and the courts of the venue are not occupied and can be used at a cheaper rate than normal. Moreover many of the spectators will have the days off and will therefore have plenty of time to enjoy the games. Proposed competition schedule: Dates Activity 17 th of October Arrivals 18 th of October Classification, training, opening ceremony 19 th of October 2 pool games for each team 20 th of October 2 pool games for each team 21 st of October Quarter- and semi-finals 22 nd of October Bronze and Final game, 5 th -16 th place matches and closing ceremony + dinner 23 rd of October Departure Transportation arrangements For means of transportation to and from the European Championships in Denmark there will be two easy options for the participants. Denmark s second largest international airport, Billund, is situated approximately 100 km from the venue in Assens. The LOC will offer well planned transport service between Billund Airport and the venue at an additional cost. If the participants would prefer to fly into Copenhagen Airport there are comfortable fast trains departing directly from the terminal of the airport and arriving at Middelfart station two hours later where the LOC will offer transport service to and from Assens. The LOC will provide staff to guide the participants at Copenhagen Airport for a continuously efficient and easy travel. 4

6 Location - venue and facilities The Championships will be held in the town of Assens which is situated on the Danish island Funen in the middle of Denmark. The town is well known for its magnificent surrounding nature with water, forests and beaches and has the attractions of a cultural active and historic old town; museums and monuments, cafés, restaurants and also the charm of a small country village with lots of fresh air and idyllic atmosphere. Assens has it all and is therefore a very popular holiday destination for Danish as well as for foreign tourists. The LOC is convinced that the 2011Goalball European Championships will be perfectly situated in Assens. The municipality of Assens has in cooperation with the venue assured that the venue is available on the preferred dates and that they will be honoured to conduct the games. Venue The Championships will be held at the, at the time, newly build sports complex called Assens- Idraetshus. The construction of the complex is ongoing and is set to be finish at the beginning of May Assens-Idraetshus consists of two separate playing courts (both on 1100m2) under the same roof which will assure an easy and efficient conduct of the Championships. The wall separating the two courts is sound proof and will prevent any sound disturbances coming from the other court. The courts will have impressive new wooden surfaces and electronically scoreboards making the venue excellent for team and ball playing sports. Moreover the complex consists of a training court (400m2), two minor courts (100 and 150m2), cafeteria, fitness room, theatre etc. We believe that Assens-Idraetshus will be a top class venue for the European Championships. The Director of Assens-Idraetshus will be the same person who is administrating the old arena where the 2010 IBSA Goalball European Men s B Championships is being held in October. 5

7 Accommodation We guarantee suitable accommodation for all participants. The recommended accommodation will be located close to the competition venue. The players and staff will be accommodated in holiday apartments. The apartments are top modern 110m2 wooden/stone houses in 2 floors which includes 3 double rooms, kitchen with stove, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer. A bathroom containing washing machine, dryer and a spa bath. Not only have the apartments got great interior, they also have a fantastic sea view and less than 100m to the beach. It will be possible to order two extra single beds to the apartments. Nations who want to make use of this offer will get a reduction in the tournament fee. The apartments are situated 1.5 kilometers from the sport venue. (Please see appendix 3 for pictures of the holiday apartments). The officials and referees will be accommodated at Marcussens Hotel which has got the same owner as the holiday apartments. Marcussens Hotel has got 40 rooms, for two to four people, that all includes bathroom, working desk, TV, telephone and wireless internet. The hotel is situated 1 kilometer from the sport venue and 500m from the holiday apartments. (For more information on Marcussens Hotel please visit The LOC will supply shuttle bus service between the accommodation facilities and the venue. Safety The Danish health system is well-established, efficient and reliable. In case of an emergency, medical assistance will be supplied by the Danish Hospital system. The participants of the 2011 IBSA Goalball European Championships never the less has to make sure to be covered for medical assistance within their own insurances. Denmark is a very peaceful and safe country and therefore it will not be necessary to enhance any security levels or facilities. The local police will have no problems meeting the security requirements. Organizing Committees Denmark has a long and strong tradition for Goalball at both club and national team levels and because of this there are many people involved in Goalball in Denmark. Denmark will be competing with both a male and female team at the upcoming World Championships as a result of this tradition. The Danish international success is due to a long lasting work from the volunteer based Goalball Committee of Denmark and the Danish NPC. Goalball in Denmark holds a large number of people coaches, referees, officials, physiotherapists - who have many years of international experience including preparation and participation in several Paralympics and World Championships. Within the field of referees Denmark has 3 referees with extensive international experience. In addition to the existing LOC two full-time employees will be hired by the NPC Denmark. The two people are Gregers Lehrmann Bruun - Paralympic Sports Manager and former Head Coach of the Danish Male Goalball National Team, and Mette Holstein Event Manager with experience in international events, latest being in charge of the hosting of the 2009 EC in Wheel Chair Rugby as well as the upcoming 2010 IBSA Goalball European Men s B-Group Championships. Based on the years of experience with Goalball the LOC can therefore provide a very thorough up- 6

8 to-date knowledge about the sport and the demands of competition arrangements. Volunteers at the Championships The LOC will engage a large group of volunteers to assist at the Championships. Part of this group will be recruited from the extensive club network of Goalball in Denmark including coaches, team leaders and people in close connection to the teams and clubs all contributing with a thorough and personal knowledge of the sport. Another part of the volunteer group will be found amongst the local population through our cooperation with the local part of the organizing committee Sport Event Fyn and the municipality of Assens amongst others the sport clubs of Assens-Hallerne. All of the volunteering staff will be fluent in English. Local, regional and national support When hosting the 2011 IBSA Goalball European Men and Women Championships NPC Denmark want to make sure that everyone experiences a very successful and well organized competition. To ensure this we are cooperating with the regional non-profit organization Sport Event Fyn. Sport Event Fyn is part of a Danish sport event networking group, which includes Sport Event Denmark. Sport Event Fyn has a broad and positive cooperation with all the different Danish sports federations. Currently, Sport Event Fyn has 10 employees who all work with organizing and hosting different sport events. The organization has several years of experience in hosting major national and international sporting events such as: - Eurogym, gymnastics, July World Cup Grand Prix, dressage, October European Match Race Sailing Championships, August Super Series Badminton, Denmark Open, October Griffin Masters Challenge Tour, golf, May U20 B World Championships in ice hockey, December th. International conference on strength training, October European Championships motocross, June European Championships petanque, August Senior European Championships water polo, august European Championships Wheelchair Rugby, august World Championships Bowling, February World Championships team squash, October 2002 World Championships trampoline, July and August 2001 NPC Denmark is looking forward to contributing with the above strengths and experiences and in conjunction with the know-how and experience of the IBSA Goalball Committee carry out a successful and efficient Championship. 7

9 Proposed Budget The following table shows the proposed budget at the current planning stage. Below are listed comments and remarks on details that may be altered during the further planning. Team entry fee = 1500 DKK (200 Euros) + athlete and staff competition fee = 4725 DKK (630 Euros) pr person. The LOC continue to work on increasing the funding further than listed in the budget. 3 Accommodation is expected to be 47 Euros pr day pr person (6 overnight stays). Catering is expected to be 20 Euros per day per person. 8

10 Local Organizing Committee The local organization committee is responsible for the whole event and will be in charge of all planning and completion of activities while involving the assistance needed. The following two lists show the specified tasks and responsibilities within hosting the 2011 IBSA Goalball Men and Women European Championships. More people may be added at a later stage as the planning progresses. 11 Classification and Referee Committee Specific personnel for classification and referees will be appointed by IBSA Goalball. The LOC will appoint people to be responsible for arrangements and planning within classification and referee issues. Funding Plan Sport Event Fyn together with the municipality of Assens is the main local support to NPC Denmark during the planning and hosting of the 2011 IBSA Goalball Men and Women Championships. Sports Event Fyn will together with Sport Event Denmark support the Championships financially both directly with a fixed amount, and indirectly by providing very affordable deals with the accommodation facilities and venues. The municipality of Assens is supporting the event by providing access to the sporting facilities required during the Championships and is furthermore contributing with a fixed sum. Sport Event Fyn s consultant group will also provide advice and assistance at the event. They will be able to supply important know-how in how to conduct major events, establish connections to local contacts, e.g. contact to local volunteers or efficient local bus companies including negotiating cheaper prices where this is relevant. 10

15 Appendix 1 - Younggoal - Promoting new ways of thinking goalball for children and youth The Danish Sports Organisation for the Disabled (the DSOD) have a vision to secure and promote the best conditions in our sports and for our athletes. Goalball has great traditions in Denmark and the DSOD wish to facilitate development in goalball for children and youngsters. Younggoall is the first training and competition manual with focus on children. By developing and adapting new ways of training and new ways of thinking, goalball for children with focus on their physical and bodily strengths and development, the DSOD hope to encourage more children to play goalball. At the EC 2011 and EC Youth Camp 2011 the DSOD present our new Younggoal concept, which have both biomechanical and physiological considerations of the game in cohesion with developing stages of children. By developing Younggoal the DSOD wish to facilitate children s technical and strategic skills, and most of all to facilitate a greater enjoinment in the game of goalball. Younggoal is planned and carried out in cooperation between the DSOD our goalball national team coaches and specialists in sports development. 14

16 Appendix 2 European Championships Youth Camp 2011 The DSOD invite all participating countries to join the first European Youth Camp in Denmark. The Danish Sports Organisation for the Disabled has a common goal to promote cohesion between our athletes and our activities. The EC Youth Camp 2011 is aimed at promoting cohesion between the elite and the young talents in goalball. The EC Youth Camp 2011 aim to promote a strong developing goalball event for everybody, and to secure the consistency of developing goalball in Denmark and other countries. The EC Youth Camp 2011 is the very first Joint European goalball training camp. We expect to promote great synergy and inspiration to goalball talents and coaches. The EC Youth Camp 2011 runs parallel with The EC 2011, and aim at youth delegations from all participating countries in the EC The EC Youth Camp 2011 aims to promote different training programmes and principles, and include coaches from the participating countries. A special social programme and participation in the final games at the EC 2011 is part of the EC Youth Camp Participating countries cover the expenses of their own EC Youth Camp 2011 delegation. The DSOD will host and organize the event, social programme and the inclusion of coaches in training. 15
