6 Part II Invited Keynote Speeches Keynote Speech 1: Advances in Wetlands for Water Pollution Control Keynote Speaker: Prof. Dr Miklas Scholz, The University of Salford, United Kingdom Time: 08:35-09:10, Sunday Morning, July 24 Location: 2 nd floor, Guangdong Hall Prof. Miklas Scholz, cand ing, BEng (equiv), PgC, MSc, PhD, CWEM, CEnv, CSci, CEng, FHEA, FIEMA, FCIWEM, FICE, Fellow of IWA holds the Chair in Civil Engineering at The University of Salford. He is the Head of the Civil Engineering Research Group. Prof. Scholz has shown individual excellence evidenced by world leading publications, postgraduate supervision and research impact. His main research areas in terms of publication output are as follow: treatment wetlands (20%), integrated constructed wetlands (ICW, 10%), sustainable flood retention basins (SFRB, 9%), permeable pavement systems (8%), decision support systems (6%), ponds (6%) and capillary suction time (6%). About 50% and 41% of his research is in water resources management and wastewater treatment, respectively. The remaining 9% are in capillary processes and water treatment. His research has led to the incorporation of findings into national and international guidelines on wetland and sustainable drainage systems. The greatest impact has been made in the area of ICW in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. Prof. Scholz contributed to the design guidelines of wetland systems as a research consultant. The guidelines assist designers and managers in all aspects of ICW planning, design, construction, maintenance and management. Moreover, specific guidelines were written for ICW used by farmers to treat farm yard runoff in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Ireland. These guidelines are specifically mentioned in national legislation. Abstract of the speech: Constructed wetlands are increasingly seen as an established technology for water pollution control. Recent technological advances in treatment units and scientific progress in areas such as molecular microbiology will be highlighted. Furthermore, the subject area has been broadened to account for more multi-disciplinary approaches such as the ecosystem services concept to solve engineering science challenges with a holistic angle. Broad water and environmental engineering aspects relevant for the drainage and treatment of storm water and wastewater are outlined, providing a descriptive overview of complex black box treatment systems and general design issues involved. The fundamental science and engineering principles in wetland engineering are explained. Standard and novel design recommendations for predominantly constructed wetlands and related sustainable drainage systems are provided. The presentation deals comprehensively not only with the design, operation, maintenance and water quality monitoring of traditional and novel wetland systems, but also with the analysis of asset performance and modeling of treatment processes and performances of existing infrastructure predominantly in developed but also developing countries, and the sustainability and economic issues involved. Solutions to pressing water quality problems associated with constructed treatment wetlands, integrated constructed wetlands, farm constructed wetlands and storm water ponds, and other sustainable biological filtration and treatment technologies linked to public health 6

7 engineering are explained. Case study topics are diverse: wetlands including natural wetlands and constructed treatment wetlands; sustainable water management including sustainable drainage systems; specific applications such as wetlands treating hydrocarbon and piggery wastewater. The research projects are multi-disciplinary, holistic, experimental and modeling-orientated. 7

He has received the Achievement Award of the Society of Toxicology of Canada in 1983, the Achievement Award of the Society of Toxicology in 1986, the ICI (Zeneca) Traveling Lectureship Award in 1991, the US-China Foundation Award in 1995, the Colgate-Palmolive Visiting Professorship Award in 1997, and the Public Communications Award of the Society of Toxicology in He is the author of over 150 papers, reviews and book chapters with emphasis in general toxicology including renal, hepatic and pulmonary toxicology. Abstract of the speech: Flame retardants (FR) are used to mitigate fire risk by increasing ignition resistance of polymeric materials and delaying fire growth. FR are employed to prevent fires and predominantly are found in printed circuit boards, electronics electrical equipment, construction materials, furniture, appliances, transportation (e.g. seats on buses, trains or airplanes), and automotive parts. The importance of FR in our society is well-established through the ubiquitous presence of these chemicals in consumer products that result in the significant number of lives saved. In particular, this presentation will focus on 2,2,6,6 -tetrabromo-4,4 -isopropylidenediphenol (tetrabromobisphenol A: TBBPA) a high production volume and efficientcompound used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards. In addition to the efficacy of FR, considerable information regarding their potential hazard is available. Hence the toxicology related to FR has undergone comprehensive testing. In bacterial mutagenicity tests, two mutagenicity tests in Saccharomyces cerevisiae D3, a mammalian chromosome aberration assay using human peripheral lymphocytes and an unconventional in vitro Sp5/V79 and SPD8 recombination assay TBBPA produced negative responses. In a multi-generational study with TBBPA there were no marked effects on fertility, reproductive capacity, development, growth, behavior, neurotoxicity and pathology in rats.similarly in a 90-day oral toxicity study in rats with TBBPA at doses of 0, 100, 300 or 1000 mg/kg/day there were no significant changes in mortality rate, body and organ weights, clinical chemistries, histopathology and a functional observational battery tests for neurotoxicity. The only change at 1000mg/kg was an increase in serum thyroxine (T4), the inactive form, but this change was accompanied by no marked alterations in T3, the active form, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) as well as histopathology. Similarly treatment with TBBPA for 2 generations in rats with doses of 0, 10, 100 or 1000mg/kg/day produced no significant changes in all parameters examined except for an elevation in serum T4; butthis was not associated marked alterations in T3, the active form, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) as well as histopathology. Although a study found evidence of increased incidence of uterine tumors in rats exposed to 1000 mg/kg/day for 2 years, it needs to be emphasized that a dose of 1000 mg/kg/day is not biologically relevant and would not be encountered by humans or wildlife in the environment. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that exposure to TBBPA does not present a risk to the environment and human health whilst its use as FR to stop fires protects lives, property and the environment. 9

10 Keynote Speech 3: The Applications of Zero Water Discharge (ZWD) Systems for Environmental and Ecological Management Speaker: Prof. Walter W. Loo, Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA Time: 09:45-10:20, Sunday Morning, July 24 Location: 2 nd floor, Guangdong Hall New Mexico Tech, PhD Graduate Hydrology Studies, Oklahoma State University, M. The achievement of ZWD will provide conservation of water, soil and energy and provide drastic increase in Gross Domestic Products (GDP). Our society s engine need a major tune up --- it is sputtering. ZWD is achieved in world s space stations no toxic air emission and the water is total recycled and solid wastes all come back to earth. This is all done with solar power. These are all achieved under extreme temperature, pressure and zero gravity in space. ZWD can be achieved on earth under much less fluctuations in temperature, pressure and normal gravity environment. ZWD systems are not expensive and will have multiple beneficial returns on investment both financially and environmentally acceptable. The paper will include successful case histories since the mid-1970s. 10

11 Keynote Speech 4: The Perfect Irrigation Water without Toxic Pesticides and High Agricultural GDP Return Speaker: Prof. Isen Wang, Principal Hydrogeologist, Environment & Technology Services, USA Time: 17:30-18:00, Sunday Afternoon, July 24 Location: 2 nd floor, Guangdong Hall National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, B.S., Geology, 1972 Washington State University, M.S., Geological Engineering, 1980 Washington State University, Post Graduate Studies, 1982 REGISTRATIONS Licensed Soil Cleanup Supervisor, Oregon Registered Environmental Assessor, California and Washington Engineer- - in- - Training, Washington PROFESSIONAL HISTORY China Ministry of Environmental Protection, Expert Consultant, Present Environment & Technology Services, Pricipal Hydrogeologist, Present Riedel Environmental Services, Inc., Manager Remediation Te chnologies, AWD Technologies, Inc., Senior Geohydrologist, Tetra Tech, Inc., Geohydrologist, Applied GeoSystems, Inc., Senior Hydrogeologist, Ecova Corporation, Geohydrologist, McKesson Environmental Servic es, Inc., Geohydrologist/Geophysicist, Boeing Computer Services, Groundwater Modeler, Abstract of the speech: The PRC calls for new innovations in farming practice while increasing the GDP per acre. The new irrigation water will increase the GDP per acre increase by 3 folds. The open door policy for the last 30 years brought in toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers from the west and caused serious damages to human health and farmlands. The new irrigation water consists of nano-bubble gases like activated oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. These are all natural fertilizers. The nano-bubbles penetrate into seed and plant tissues easily and cause at least 100% increase in crops, vegetables and fruits yields per acre. The activated oxygen in the irrigation water also remediate residual toxic pesticides. It also kills insect larvae in soil which make the farm products into organic grade which increase the value by 300%. 11

We will depart from Guang Dong Hotel at 8:00 to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and then to the The Expo of China Pavilion, and will be back to the hotel at about 17:30 on July 26th (p. s. Remember to take your Tour Card) 1) Huangpu River Cruises The Huangpu River (Huangpu Jiang) is the city's shipping artery both to the East China Sea and to the mouth of the Yangzi River, which the Huangpu joins 29km (18 miles) north of downtown Shanghai. The Huangpu's wharves are the most fascinating in China. Cruising on the Huangpu River starts from the Bund to the south of the Bund will take one or two hours. As the ship heads north, downstream, it passes Huangpu Park across from the Peace Hotel, still considered by many to be the loveliest piece of architecture in Shanghai. Others prefer the architectural perfection of the Jin Mao Tower on the opposite shore, now flanked in the back by the even taller World Financial Center. Also on the Pudong shore are the can't-miss Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai International Convention Center with its twin glass globes, and a slew of hotels, offices, and malls of the Lujiazui Financial Area. 2) Oriental Pearl TV Tower The Oriental Pearl Tower stands by the bank of Huangpu River. It is in the center of Lujiazui, opposite to the Bund which is famous for its grand buildings of various architectural styles. The tower is 468 metres high. It is the highest TV Tower in Asia and is the third highest one in the world. The designers magically set the eleven beautiful spheres of various sizes up from the green grassland to the blue sky with two giant spheres shining like two rubies. The whole design is rich in poetic and pictorial splendor, which gives the tourists the impression that pearls of various sizes are dropping onto the emerald plate. The Oriental Pearl Tower consists of three big columns which are 9 metres in diameter, the space 23

24 module, the upper sphere, the lower sphere, five small spheres, tower base and the square. In the tower, there is a double-decked elevator which can hold fifty people at a time and two speed elevator which can run at speed of 7 meters per second. These two elevators are the only ones of their kinds in China. The tower is equipped with three-dimensional lighting installation, which makes the whole tower very colorful and beautiful. 3) The Expo of China Pavilion The China Pavilion is located in the projecting area near the main entrance of Pudong Site, within the Zone B of the Enclosed Area. It comprises the Chinese National Pavilion, Chinese Provinces Pavilion and Pavilion of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The contour design of China Pavilion is based on the concept of Oriental Crown, which is to express the spirit and disposition of Chinese culture. Since Chinese people always believe that red represents happy, joyous and solemn, the theme color of China Pavilion is bright red, the traditional and sacred color, which intends to reflect the festive atmosphere. The exhibition in China Pavilion follows the principal line of Search & Found. The three exhibition areas, namely The Footprints, the Dialogue and The Vision, lead visitors to find and feel Chinese wisdom in its urban development. 24
