1 SOC7170 Political Sociology Fall 2008, Tuesday 11:30-2:30pm, Desmarais 8143 Instructor: Philippe Couton Office hours: Tuesday, 2:30-4:30 pm Office: Desmarais 8102 Phone: ext Course website: WebCT Course Description: Note: In , this seminar is designated as one of two partial immersion seminars, for Anglophone students. Much of the seminar will be conducted in French, although readings and assignments are primarily in English. See below for details. This course presents some of the most important recent developments in political sociology, including empirical and theoretical studies of citizenship, power, nationalism, social movements, the state, transborder migration, and related themes. In addition to core readings in English, this course will also present a few texts in French, intended to help students better understand some of the important debates in French-language political sociology. Only a basic knowledge of French is necessary, but a commitment to improving it, if needed, is an absolute requirement. The general objective of the course is twofold. First, students should come away with a good knowledge of major and emerging concepts and authors relevant to the study of political sociology to inform their future research. Second, and perhaps more importantly, by the end of the semester, we should all have developed a better understanding of current debates at the intersection of the study of politics and society, through discussions, presentations, and readings. These debates include the future of the nation state, the transformation of political contention, the redefinition of borders, and the emergence of new collective political actors. Evaluation : - Two in class presentations, 10% each. Each student will present one of the books and authors discussed that week. One of these presentations should be on one of the Frenchlanguage works discussed. - Participation : 10% - Research proposal : 20% (2-4 pages) - Final paper : 50% (about 25 pages)
