Dossier 1: Le Front national Dossier 2: Les Trois Affaires du Foulard (The two dossiers will be circulated to students in the course of the semester.) Film Fabrice Généstal, La Squale (2001) STRUCTURE OF COURSE The course will be divided between weekly sessions with the whole group and fortnightly seminars in smaller groups. The whole group will meet at 4 p.m. every Monday at a location to be arranged. The seminars will meet fortnightly at either 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. on Tuesdays in a room/s to be arranged. Precise details of seminar groups will be organised in the first week of teaching. ASSESSMENT This module will be assessed by: one coursework essay or commentary of approximately 2,000 words in length (50% of the final module mark), and one 90-minute exam in the Summer Exam period (50% of the final module mark). The deadline for the coursework essay is as follows: 12 noon on Friday 18th March MODULE OUTCOMES 1.Knowledge & understanding - An overview of different traditions in French nationalism and different conceptions of French national identity, as they developed from the C19th, particularly. (A4) - An understanding of the ways in which mass immigration to post-war France has challenged the notions of French national identity contained in political traditions ranging from the extreme right to the republican left. (A4) - Awareness of techniques of textual analysis appropriate to the study of both political discourse and the images and representations of immigration and national identity more generally.(a5) 2. Intellectual Skills - Development of reading and interpretative skills acquired and reinforced in Years 1 & 2. (B1) - Reading and interpretative skills appropriate to the study of political discourses. (B3) - Critical analysis of primary and secondary materials. (B2, B4, B5) - Understanding of complex ideas in their socio-historical context. (B3) - Ability to develop arguments in discussion and in writing. (B6, B7, B8) 3. Professional Skills - Reading and critical evaluation of sophisticated texts in French. (C1, C3) - Commentary and essay writing. (C3, C4, C6) - Independent work on primary and secondary sources. (C5) - Use of library resources. (C5) 4. Transferable skills - Oral and written communication skills. (D1) - Critical evaluation of texts. (D2) - Independent study. (D4) - Time organisation; meeting deadlines. (D7) - Production of word-processed course work. (D8) - Self-reliance, self-confidence. (D10)

Wk 10 La Squale & stereotypes of the banlieue. Attendance is compulsory. Students should inform tutors in advance if they have to miss a class for bona fide reasons, and in such cases are responsible for finding out what work they have missed. Students should come to tutorials fully prepared, having completed all reading and tasks set in the previous class. N.B. In line with the University of Nottingham s policy to ensure good practice and the highest standards of teaching, the Department operates a scheme of Peer Review of all staff. From time to time you may note the presence of another member of staff in the classroom. The function of that person is only to observe your lecturer. The observer is in no way involved with the process of assessment of students. COURSEWORK ESSAYS (2,000 words approx.) YOU MUST ANSWER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1) Discuss the contention that the numerous measures taken by successive French governments since 1974 to control immigration have either been flawed, contradictory, or fundamentally racist. 2) Account for the increasingly high political profile acquired by the politics of immigration in France since the 1980s. 3) Identify and analyse the constituent elements of the Front national s current political programme. To what extent do these various elements express a single coherent political ideology? 4) Write a critical commentary on one of Jean-Marie Le Pen s speeches. (copies of the speech with guidelines on writing a commentary will be circulated separately). Deadline for submission of essays: 12 noon on Friday 18th March EXAM FORMAT The exam will last 90 minutes during which time you will have to answer ONE question from a choice of four. There will be 2 questions on the affaire du foulard (one commentary question and one essay question), and two questions on La Squale and representations of the banlieue (both essay questions).
