2 Is a sustainability strategy a luxury, a necessary cost of doing business, or a profit driver for your company? Especially in challenging times, it is tempting to focus on short-term profitability and cost cutting but a business focussed on sustainability may be better positioned to seize strategic opportunities and realise lower costs. Effective sustainable strategies differ enormously depending on the industry, corporate culture, and other factors. With this in mind, we have developed this executive programme using a wide range faculty, mentors, and peers which can help you determine the right strategy for your situation. Companies such as Dupont, Unilever, and IBM save money and increase profitability by taking a proactive approach to sustainability. More importantly, they are leading a change in global industry standards. Smaller companies have the advantage that they are more flexible in adapting business practices that are inherently flexible. What can we learn from them? Only time will tell which strategy will be most successful, yet recent history is full of examples of firms folding because of a relentless drive for today s return rather than tomorrow s market. As societal demand for responsible business and the cost of natural resources continues to rise, companies are stretching to think of new business models that are sustainable in the long term and strengthen the organisation today. Therefore sustainable innovation plays a key role in determining the strategy for the future. You will discover successful sustainable business models pioneered by industry, how it was done, and the effect on the bottom line. You will also discover why some firms failed in implementing sustainable business practices. Mastering Sustainable Business The five-day Mastering Sustainable Business executive programme gives you tools you can use to identify opportunities for developing innovative, sustainable products or services that complement and add value to your current product portfolio. You will learn how to create and embed sustainable business practices into your organisation s core business processes and the development of your own sustainable business case tailored to your organisation and built from available means. It is a highly interactive and action-oriented programme, using proven conceptual frames, case discussions and small-group exercises. When you complete the programme you will also carry a roadmap for implementing your ideas, under the supervision of an expert coach. Our executive classroom is the unspoiled environment of the dunes overlooking the North Sea in Noordwijk. Because sustainability practices affect all parts of the organisation, the programme is aimed at general and functional managers, as well as professionals in development for business, products and services, plus strategy, procurement and sales. You will be asked to choose a mentor in your organisation who will act as a coach to assist you in implementing your business model innovations resulting from the programme.

His field of expertise is the development process of new products and services in firms. By studying innovation in such firms as ING, ASML, Philips and Unilever, Jan s research group develops new knowledge in topics such as the effects of personal networks in the front end of innovation, the proper balance between freedom and control in innovation activities, and innovation activities in service firms. Thomas Blekman MSc teaches at Corporate Effectuation & Strategy at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, is partner at De Beukelaar Groep, former Dean of Corsendonk College, and is a successful serial entrepreneur. He stands with one foot firmly in the academic world and the other in daily practice. He has recently published his second book, Orchestration of Effectuation; his first, Corporate Effectuation, also on the subject of effectuation, was a bestseller in the Netherlands.

4 Faculty Andy Hall BSc, his position at the forefront of sustainability innovation draws heavily on Andy Hall s technical background in materials science, engineering and product development. Since graduation from Brunel University in the UK, Andy has held various technical and commercial positions with international companies such as Philips, Denso and Fokker. A close working relationship with Michael Braungart and the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA) lead Andy to be invited to contribute to the development of the new Cradle to Cradle certification standard for complex products. Dr Steffen Giessner is Associate Professor in the Department of Organisation and Personnel Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. There is no argument that leadership is important in every society, but it needs answers to specify conditions under which leader-ship can be good or bad, meaningful or meaningless and influential or not influential. Studying leadership and understanding how it can be respectful, ethical, and sustainable is his passion. Dr Frank Wijen is Associate Professor in the Department of Strategic Management and Business Environment at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. He holds a PhD in management from Tilburg University, where he also worked as a Senior Researcher. His research interests include institutional processes, globalisation, and corporate and national environmental management. He is also academic coordinator of Sustainable RSM. He was marketing manager of a globally operating textile recycling company and is owner-manager of an international trade firm. Dr Marc Baaij is Associate Professor of Strategic Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. In addition, he is academic director of RSM s Executive Master of Science in Management Consultancy programme. Marc has published international scientific and professional books and articles about analytical methods and techniques for problem-solving, management consulting in general, and the international dispersion of corporate headquarters of multinationals. Marc previously worked for The Boston Consulting Group as a management consultant and a research manager. Dr Patrick Reinmoeller is Professor of Strategic Management at Cranfield School of Management and a core member of the China Business Research Centre at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Patrick teaches in customised executive programmes and MBA and Executive MBA courses on Strategic Management, Competitive Strategy, Knowledge Management and Strategies of Multinational Corporations. He has lead executive education programmes for Atos Origin, Barr, GSK Biologicals, IAEA, Interpipe, KPN, Philips, Shell, Schlumberger, and other major companies. Patrick s research interests include strategic management, organisation theory, knowledge and innovation, and international strategy. Machiel van Dooren MSc started organising learning journeys in 2002 and founded EsteamWork ( a year later as a social venture focussing on creating sustainable partnerships between businesses and NGOs. Another social venture followed in 2006 when Machiel co-founded OCO2, a company all about reducing and compensating carbon emissions that merged with Climate Neutral Group (www. climateneutralgroup.com) in Today Machiel primarily works with non-profits and social enterprises looking for business model innovation and social venture creation, acting as a social entrepreneur and impact investor. He holds an MSc, International Business from Maastricht University. Bruce Haase MSc, with more than 20 years experience in international business, Bruce Haase brings a deep understanding of business sustainability issues and hands-on experience implementing sustainability strategies within commercial organizations. His business experience includes 10 years at Canon Europe, where he served as CSR Director for EMEA. As Head of the Climate Business Engagement Unit within WWF, Bruce was responsible for the prestigious Climate Savers program. He holds an MSc, Sustainable Development (dist.) from University of Exeter with a focus in business leadership.
