11 INDUSTRIAL DESIGN COURSE DESCRIPTIONS MUST COURSES 1ST SEMESTER: INDD 109 Basic Design 1 (2-4-4) 6 The content of this course includes the introduction of basic design principles and the exploration of light, color, shadow, points, lines, textures, shapes, materials, spaces, proportions, dimensions, balance, coherence, rhythm and unity. It is also aimed at enabling students to develop analytical thinking and creative problem-solving skills through two- and three-dimensional exercises. INDD 105 Introduction to Design 1 ( 2-2-3) 5 The content of this course includes the methods of idea exploration, idea development and transforming ideas into 3D designs. It consists of exercises of three-dimensional thinking related to product design; comprehending basic geometrical shapes; sketching; abstract thinking on two- and three-dimensional relations; improving physical 3D modeling; and experiencing various modeling techniques with different materials. INDD 111 Technical Drawing (2-2-4) 3 The content of this course includes the introduction and applications of universal technical drawing techniques that are essential to express designed products and for sending these products to manufacturing processes. Introduction of drawing tools and teaching students the skills of using them; conveying the principles of drawing of basic geometrical shapes starting from points and lines; orthographic drawings of designed products; drawing plan view and sectional view; and giving information on scale and dimensioning will be covered. INDD 107 Basic Computer (1-2-2) 2 The content of this course includes preparing presentations in basic computer programs; giving information about softwares and hardware used for designing, drawing and modeling; and their applications. INDD 113 Freehand Drawing 1 (2-2-3) 3 The content of this course includes the exercises of freehand drawing techniques, which improve sketching skills and knowledge to be used as a communication tool in the design process. It consists of theoretical information and applications of drawing sections and views by following the Fundamentals of scaling and dimensioning; improving the perception of the third dimension through different kinds of perspective and drawing techniques; and the methods of emphasizing drawings with shadows and hatching while transforming objects into 3D on the plane. 12 The content of this course includes the introduction of the contents and usage of software programs appropriate for designing, drawing and modeling techniques. It consists of theoretical knowledge and basic applications in order to make use of the computer technology in the design process. INDD 116 Freehand Drawing 2 (2-2-3) 3 This course includes the applications of freehand drawing techniques, which improve sketching skills and knowledge to be used as a communication tool in the design process. It is the continuation of INDD 109 Freehand Drawing 1. It aims to internalize the methods of design thinking and creative thinking. During the course, the following issues will be covered theoretically and practically: 1. Definition of design problem 2. Design practice-oriented research methods 3. Creative idea exploration and development methods 4. User-oriented design methods 5. 2D and 3D designing techniques 6. Methods of form and function analysis in product/service/conceptual design 7. Application of the knowledge in design, materials and production techniques 8. INDD 209 Materials and Production Techniques 1 (2-2-3) 4 The objective of this course is to teach students the materials that are used for product design and related production techniques theoretically and practically. The influences of chosen materials on design in the design process and the relationship between material selection and production techniques will be covered in the course. INDD 213 Computer Aided Industrial Design 1 (1-2-2) 4 This course consists of the introduction two-dimensional drawing and three-dimensional modeling software; and the exercises of AutoCAD, Rhinoceros and other CAD programs. INDD 215 Ergonomics (2-0-2) 2 The content of this course covers the anthropometric, physiologic and biomechanical data of human-environmentproduct relationship in the design and project processes. INDD 217 Visual Representation Techniques 1 (2-2-3) 3 The objective of this course is to enable students to gain improved skills of visualizing ideas (sketching and rendering techniques etc.) and presenting them in the design and project processes. INDD 219 Model Making 1 (2-2-3) 3 This course aims at conveying physical 3D presentation techniques and principles in the design process. It includes practices of transforming design ideas into 3D objects with form and function, and modeling and prototyping with different materials and techniques in an atelier environment. INDD 207 Design History 1 (2-0-2) 2: The content of this course includes the examination of the historical development of design throughout history in terms of different socio-cultural structures. It is the continuation of INDD 212 Model Making 1 with advanced practices. INDD 214 Computer Aided Industrial Design 2 (1-2-2) 4 This course consists of the introduction two-dimensional drawing and three-dimensional modeling software; and the exercises of AutoCAD, Rhinoceros and other CAD programs. It is the continuation of INDD 213 Computer Aided Industrial Design 1 with advanced practices. INDD 208 Design History II (2-0-2) 2 The content of this course includes the post-industrial period of the historical development of design. Understanding of design in the 20th century, its effects on recent understanding in design and contemporary design issues will be covered. INDD226 Office Internship (2-2-3) 3 The objective of this internship is to enable students to participate in a professional design process in a design studio in order to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment during 30 work days. Reporting the experiences to the department is required. 5TH SEMESTER: INDD 301 Industrial Design Studio 3 (2-6-5) 9: This course includes the 3rd year-level design projects. It aims to internalize the methods of design thinking and creative thinking. During the course, the following issues will be covered theoretically and practically: 1. Definition of design problem 2. INDD326 Atelier Internship (2-2-3) 3: The objective of this internship is to enable students to participate in a manufacturing process in a production facility in order to gain hands-on experience in production and atelier environment during 30 work days. VCDS Visual Perception (elective) (3-0-3) 5 ECTS As a branch of experimental psychology, visual perception aims to understand how the visible world becomes understandable in the brain, with the help of certain principles and illusions. This course will focus on examples of these visual principles and illusions, how they are explained and how they may be applied to the practice of communication design. PRAD Event Management (2-2-3) 5 ECTS The overall aim of this course is helping students to understand and practice the planning process of events and all aspects required to plan and implement one. At the end of the lesson, to plan and execute an event -which are an important part of the marketing communication activities- are expected from the students who learned these practices via the workshops and case studies. Within the course, the students will be informed about how to create successful events, the steps of the event management, how to use research methods prior to plan events, sponsorship, how to market the event, risk management, other creative elements, catering, the keys of entertainment, technical support, logistical considerations and other useful information on topics including what must happen on the day of the event, designing event chart, flow of communication, code & safety compliance and follow-up.
