1 Course Description Purchasing Management/AP Degree in Business, Design and Technology Common Core projects done by all students from all lines in the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd semesters TEKO project (1 st semester) The students are introduced to professional communicative tools and basic understanding of aesthetics and idioms. They are made familiar with contemporary well known designers and their characteristics. They learn to navigate in TEKO s facilities on campus, including IT systems, library, functional workshops etc. The project is interdisciplinary and is organized as group work. Lectures related to aesthetics and value philosophy to describe the characteristics of the players in the lifestyle industry are held during the project. Workshops with an introduction to term databases and presentation techniques are incorporated. A lecture showing creative interpretations of the influential designers is given. Team Building (1 st semester) Students should become able to recognize Belbin s team roles and to see the advantage of the different role profiles in a teamwork context. Students should become familiar with their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of the roles they play in a teamwork context. The project provides students with the opportunity of creating a network that involves students from other classes and teams. Value Chain (1 st semester) Students are introduced to the fashion and lifestyle industry, and acquire basic understanding of how a company works. Students should become able to communicate results. Style history (1 st semester) The subject gives the students an insight into stylistic periods during the 20 th century within fashion, architecture, art, design, and society from the Industrialization till today in order to understand the connection between the mentioned elements. Students learn through decoding, describing and visualizing the characteristics of the different stylistic periods. Brand ID & Product development (1 st semester) The students choose a company from another line of business. Product development for a furniture line should be made after they have decoded the company s image and values. The target group of the product must be described. Students should account for all the elements that are relevant to making good product design. They should use relevant style development methods and work out prototypes, and they should also develop and communicate the concept and the

2 function of the product in relation to brand and company. In addition they select and describe materials suitable for the final product. Finally they calculate the consumption of materials and work out relevant technical documentation for outsourced production. During the project students can choose between different workshops regarding product development and product manufacturing methods. Entrepreneurship (2 nd semester) Students should acquire knowledge and understanding of how to set up a business based on an idea. In addition, students should acquire knowledge of the method applied in the 1 st year exam. Work Experience (3 rd semester) The objective of the work experience period is to provide students with the opportunity of acquiring knowledge of the industry as well as an understanding of how to apply theory within the company s different functions the value chain. Students should be able to connect business practices and the theory learnt to as large an extent as possible. The work experience period should qualify students to analyse, assess, plan and carry out tasks/projects with their point of departure in practical issues. Sustainability (3 rd semester) Students should acquire insight into issues relating to sustainability and environmental impact. Electives (2 nd and 3 rd semester) The objective of the electives is to give students the opportunity to add an individual dimension to the compulsory study programme studied. Students can choose among a wide range of subjects; each elective may be of 1, 2 or 4 weeks duration. 1st semester Common Core subjects taught to all classes Design Students get a general introduction to design within the furniture and lifestyle business. Subjects: Technical working sketches Product specifications and materials Freehand sketching and colouring of designs Colour studies and international colour systems. Theory on graphic layout, collage techniques, and practical design exercises

3 Business Students should acquire understanding of the company in an interdisciplinary and supply chain context that focuses on business processes and areas. Global Communication Students should become able to communicate both in writing and orally in professional and industry-related contexts using reasonably varied and correct English. Students should develop their knowledge of issues relevant to their future profession and of issues in the industry and society in general. Students should obtain basic knowledge of terminology used in the industry. Material knowhow, fashion or furniture Students should acquire the background knowledge and understanding required to assess whether a material is suitable for a given product. Likewise students should become able to assess the structure, properties and application of a material. 2 nd semester Speciality subjects (only taught to purchasing-management students) Economics 1 Students become qualified to take an active part in the financial considerations relating to the purchasing of a product. Economics 2 Students become qualified to participate in and manage the financial aspects relating to the different parts of the purchasing process. This includes acquiring knowledge of the legal issues that relate to purchasing management. Economics 3 Students are introduced to how IT may be applied for analysis, calculation, budgeting, and simulation purposes etc. in different parts of the purchasing process. Purchasing 1 Students become able to establish and develop beneficial co-operation with suppliers taking into account the characteristics and supply requirements of the company, e.g. products and types of products the supplier market supply concepts (SOD etc.) production concepts (contract manufacturing etc.) the purchasing situation Logistics 1 Students acquire basic understanding of the concept of logistics and its main elements. In addition, they acquire basic understanding of the elements included in

4 handling logistics in a company. Furthermore, they become able to understand the logistics strategy of a company in the context of the company s overall strategy. The correlation between logistics and SCM is also explained to students, who also acquire competences enabling them to apply concrete tools necessary to work with logistics in a practical context. Material know-how: furniture Students acquire the background knowledge required to read and understand different forms of drawings and documentation such as hardware drawings, assembly instructions and parts lists. Material know-how: fashion Students acquire the background knowledge and understanding required to make an assessment of a textile product. The purpose is to make the students able to assess both the product in general as well as specific details of the product. The parameters applied for such an assessment will be quality and/or function and/or price of the product. Applied ERP Students become able to use an ERP system for performing tasks relevant to their future job function. In addition, they work with the value chain through their work with the different tasks and processes which a product is subject to from it is designed until it is sold. Seminar and Methodology Students train the process of working out written assignments; in the training assignment they are required to come up with suggestions for the solution to a purchasing management related problem. Students work independently using a methodological and systematic approach. Culture and Ethics Students acquire knowledge and understanding of cultural and ethical issues significant to their future jobs as purchasers in the global fashion and lifestyle industry. They become able to act in a cross-cultural context and to develop their ability to behave appropriately and accordingly in a globalized industry with many different views and approaches to culture and ethics. They are prepared to handle the specific communicative challenges that they will meet with in their future jobs as purchasers in the global lifestyle industry. 3 rd semester Controlling Fashion Students acquire knowledge of the process from order placement to product delivery at the company s warehouse. The purpose is to ensure that students will have the knowledge required to procure products of the right quality.

5 Controlling Furniture Students acquire the background knowledge and understanding required to assess whether a material is suitable for a given product. They are also become to assess the structure, properties, and application of a material. Purchasing 2 and 3 Students become able to take part in the tactical and strategic processes that are part of the supply chain. Collection Building 1 Students become able to take part in the tactical and strategic processes that are part of the supply chain. Purchasing Economics 4 Students become qualified to participate in and manage the financial aspects that relate to the different parts of the purchasing process. 4 th semester Material know-how 2: fashion Students acquire the qualifications required to communicate with suppliers in Denmark and abroad. Students learn the terminology necessary to describe factual concepts relating to different product types from fibre to finished product. Material know-how 2: furniture Students acquire the background knowledge and understanding required to assess whether a material is suitable for a given product. They also become able to assess the structure, properties, and applications of a material. Trend 1 Students become aware of the significance of a brand to the purchasing of products and the expression of such products in terms of colours and style. International Economics Students acquire a basic understanding of the economic mechanisms that control many aspects of our everyday lives. They acquire a toolbox that will enable them to understand the economic mechanisms that control our lives as individuals and citizens in society as well as international or global organizations or as citizens in a globalized world. Logistics 2 Students acquire conceptual understanding of the role of logistics in a company and in the supply chain. Students should be able to apply the most frequently used tools for logistics management and should have knowledge of a wide range of logistic methods and models. Furthermore, students should be able to understand the logistics strategy of a company in the context of the company s overall strategy.

6 Students should be able to carry out basic logistic analysis and prepare relevant improvement plans for the purpose of adapting the logistics strategy to the company s overall strategy. Marketing Students should become qualified to contribute to the development of a company s downstream activities with the company s supply chain as the main focus. In addition, students should become able to see which consequences a branding and marketing strategy may have on a company s supply chain. Organization and Management Students become qualified to participate in and manage processes with the aim of optimizing functions.
