1 Breast Cancer Awareness Ideas I'd recommend this website We did Dig for the Cure last season at the University of Colorado and plan on doing it again this fall. One way that helped with the promotion of our night was we got involved with a sorority on campus (ZTA) and they helped with passing out fliers, facebook events, and just talking about the event. We had our highest crowd on that night with just sponsoring with a sorority. I hope maybe that could help some! We ve done a lot for our Think Pink night. We got our local Breast Cancer research center involved and all the money raised that night went back to them. They also helped us promote the event to all their donors and get their patients involved. We had a breast cancer survivor sing the national anthem, Bank of the West provided pink tshirts to the first 3,000 fans, Crocs provided Pink crocs to the first 200 fans, our spirit groups got all dressed up in pink, both coaching staffs dressed in pink, throughout the night we had tidbits about breast cancer on the videoboard, during breaks our spirit groups walked up and down the stairs collecting money from our fans. We also gave out Pink balloons to the endzones. The Atlantic 10 and many other schools have a program called Dig for a Cure. The person who started it was the volleyball coach at Charlotte. I would suggest calling them. I did this event when I was at the University of Rhode Island and it raised a couple thousand dollars for the Susan G. Koman foundation and increased our attendance at that game. There might be some information on Charlotte s website. We did the Think Pink for basketball. I had the local hospitals invite their breast cancer survivors to the game for free. The hospitals also set up on the concourse with displays and passed out materials. There was a moment of silence before the game and we also had those survivors in attendance stand and be recognized. We made simple pink warm-up shirts for our basketball players with white logos and numbers. We auctioned off the game-worn warm up tees at halftime and the fans, especially parents, went nuts in the silent auction. We started the silent auction on Thursday at men's/women's basketball, and the silent auction ended at halftime of the Saturday men's game. We immediately began collecting the game-worn tees and distributed during the second half as winners came to the table and paid. We made a separate sheet for each player and had like 30 lines for names and bids to be written down. It raised quite a bit of money and was pretty easy. Any questions, let me know. Thanks! Last year was the first year that we did a Pink Out for volleyball and it went very well. We asked all fans to wear a pink shirt, and handed out pink shirts to the first 200 fans. Our hospital had a table and employees handed out informational pamphlets. I was able to get a local bank to donate money to the cancer society. For every fan that was in attendance, that bank donate that amount (it was our highest attendance of the year!) I also asked the student-athletes and coaches from BOTH teams to wear pink tees during warm ups and they did. Our dance team performed at halftime in pink uniforms. It was a huge success for us and we look to build on it this year! hope this helps
2 Visit our site (last year s release) for more information: In this release, there is a Dig for the Cure site, operated by our former volleyball coach, Lisa Marston. Here at Charlotte, we ve done it for a few years now and on game night we tie in the Komen foundation, student orgs., women from the business community, etc. I think Stanford is the only Pac 10 school to participate, but they may give you some ideas. We are going to participate in our second Dig for the Cure event this season. Last year we raised $2,000 for our local Komen affiliate and the event was great. We have a group of local healthcare providers that sponsor a Paint the Town Pink month in October so I have been able to work with them on this years event. It works well for volleyball because October is breast cancer awareness month and our fans really respond well. We promote our event as an opportunity to donate to the cause and everyone wears pink, we hand out pink rally towels and the event has gotten a lot of press. It wasn't as successful as our women's basketball event but its great for the size of our facility. I encourage you to work with local healthcare providers- hospitals, women's clinics, cancer society chapters, ywcas. Working through them to get in on their publications and be part of their newsletters, calendars and special events has been great for our events. They also provide speakers for us and with women's basketball we allowed them to set up tables in the concourse to promote themselves and their cause which was awesome. Those are my thoughts, good luck to you We did our event last year with Dig for the Cure. We held a silent auction with South Carolina gear signed by all head coaches, and got some gyms, restaurants, and spas in town to donate product or services. The Volleyball players filled up pledge sheets. they collected a $1 for every dig for that designated game. A local t-shirt company in town donated pink shirts and the first 250 fans got Free pink t-shirts. We promoted it on campus with a sorority whose philanthropy is Breast Cancer. For the public we got the coaches and athletes up to do some morning TV talk shows, radio shows and did ticket giveaways with our radio partners. We raised about $6k
3 BREAST CANCER FACTS AND STATISTICS Did You Know... Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women and the leading overall cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 20 and 59 In the United States, breast cancer is expected to be newly diagnosed every three minutes, and a woman will die from breast cancer every 13 minutes African American women have a higher breast cancer death rate than women of any other racial or ethnic population Eighty percent of all breast tumors are benign In 2007, it was estimated that there would be 178,480 new cases of breast cancer in women and 2,030 new cases of breast cancer in men. Of these, an estimated 40,460 women and 450 men will die from the disease The basic treatment choices for breast cancer are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy The most common risk factors of breast cancer are sex, age, personal history, family history and breast cancer genes The highest risk factor for breast cancer is being female with the disease being 100 times more common among women The risk of breast cancer increases as a woman grows older Women who have had breast cancer and women with a history of breast disease may develop it again The risk of developing breast cancer increases for a woman whose mother, sister, daughter or two or more relatives have had the disease Some women and men may be born with a change in one or two genes that are important for regulating breast cell growth. Those who inherit an alteration in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene are at an inherited higher risk for breast cancer The hormone Estrogen may also play a key role in the risk factors of breast cancer including having an early first period or menstrual bleeding, having a first pregnancy after the age of 25 to 35, having no children and the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy
4 Women who begin menstruating before the age of 12 are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer the more menstrual cycles a woman gets over her lifetime, the more likely she is to get the disease Early pregnancies may help to lower the chances of getting breast cancer, but these same hormonal changes may work in reverse and contribute to the incidence of breast cancer after age 35 Women who experience continuous menstrual cycles until menopause are at a higher than average risk for breast cancer Women appear to have an increased risk of breast cancer while they are on Hormone Replacement Therapy which continues for a short time thereafter There are several lifestyle choices that individuals can make to help reduce breast cancer risk including decreasing daily fat intake (especially saturated and hydrogenated), increasing fiber, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, limiting alcohol, staying active and not smoking The best available method to detect breast cancer early is a mammography screening Breast cancer is the most invasive cancer among women in the U.S. accounting for nearly one out of every three cancers diagnosed An estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to occur in 2007 *Sources: AstraZeneca getbcfacts.com American Cancer Society cancer.org
