This college has the mission of empowering women students from economically and socially backward communities, irrespective of caste and creed providing education of the highest quality that these women may led responsible and purposeful lives and transmit their achievement for the betterment of society. True to the motto of the college, Learning is Light from God, in the five decades that have sped by since the inception of the college, approximately 82,000 women have passed out with honours through the portals of this College. The J.B.A.S. College for Women offers its students innumerable opportunities and facilities on campus. Today there are 13 Undergraduate and 6 Postgraduate departments in the Forenoon Session of which 4 departments are of the Research level. Besides the regular courses, 11 Career Oriented Programmes are funded by the UGC. The College also has a Placement Cell with an excellent record of campus recruitment, a UGC sponsored Centre for Women's Studies, a Health Centre with two doctors on campus and a counselling centre with an on-campus counsellor. J.B.A.S. College for Women is one of the reputed autonomous colleges in the country which is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India (NAAC) as an outstanding college with 'A' Grade. The College holds the first position amongst the Women's Colleges in Chennai City. The college holds the following accreditation by the NAAC in three cycles 1999-Outstanding Five Star Status 2007-Outstanding A Plus Grade 2013-Outstanding CGPA of 3.61 (out of 4) at 'A' Grade About the Department of Zoology In the year 1955, the department functioned as Department of Natural Science and in 1965, it was established as Department of Zoology. In 1989, M.Sc. Zoology was introduced and in 2001 it was upgraded to a Research Department offering Ph.D. Research degree. From 2005 onwards there has been a bifurcation of UG course into Zoology (with Vocational Biotechnology) and Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology. M.Phil was introduced in the year The department also offers an

3 interdisciplinary add-on certificate course in Bioinformatics. There are seven well-equipped labs which include a Biotechnology, Bio-informatics and Research lab. The Department imparts quality education at UG & PG level and strives to establish Research of high calibre. The Research areas include Environmental Toxicology & Environmental Biotechnology, Neurotoxicology, Nano-toxicology, Aquaculture, Plankton diversity, Animal Physiology and Public Health. The Department aims to provide an excellent academic environment and focuses in nurturing and transforming the young minds to face the challenges ahead. Humans are altering and polluting the environment thus encouraging out breaks of vectors which subsequently causes disease. This conference focuses on vector-borne diseases as an important threat with an increasing impact on human health. Public Health is defined as an interdisciplinary multilevel approach that deals with questions of preventing diseases at the population level. Vectors are organisms that transmit infections from one host to another. Common biological vectors are arthropods but many domestic animals too are important vectors or asymptomatic carriers of parasites and pathogens that attack human or other animals. Arthropods form a major group of vectors which include mosquitoes, sand flies, lice, fleas, ticks and mites transmitting a huge number of diseases. Many such vectors are haematophagous, which feed on blood at some or all stages of life. Nearly half of the world s population is affected by Vector Borne Diseases, resulting in huge morbidity and mortality. Vector borne diseases have gained an upper hand in recent times threatening the human population with severe casualties.
