1 Faculty of Health Sciences PhD Programme Admission Information

2 THE UNIVERSITY Chartered in 1983, the Aga Khan University (AKU) is an international private university that currently operates in South and Central Asia, East Africa and the United Kingdom. AKU occupies a pivotal place in the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of development agencies working under the leadership of His Highness the Aga Khan, and contributes in major ways to social development. AKU prioritises higher education and research initiatives relevant to the problems of the societies in which it operates, generally in the developing world. Through on-going partnerships with prestigious institutions worldwide, AKU brings international expertise to bear upon the establishment and enhancement of its current and future programmes and services. With a growing programme offering, in addition to our existing five campuses spread over three continents, we are planning three new faculties and seven graduate schools to deliver a range of educational choices in an environment that respects cultural diversity. Our merit-based, transparent admissions process and need-based financial assistance programme attempts to ensure that a diversity of high calibre students are able to attend the programmes at AKU. PHD PROGRAMME A PhD programme is the backbone of meaningful and scholarly engagements in any university. It is also crucial for the development of new generations of researchers, teachers, and leaders. The PhD programme in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at AKU is central to its mission of producing research-based knowledge that is relevant to the developing world and which will have impact. With this aim in view, a graduate programme in Health Sciences was implemented at AKU in October The PhD programme is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programme in health sciences with four specialities/streams. Biological Sciences Clinical Sciences Nursing Population and Public Health A brief description of these streams has been given below: 2

3 Biological Sciences: Research training within this discipline will include studies in the fields of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology. Candidates will be expected to undertake a novel doctoral thesis project in one of the above-mentioned fields. Clinical Sciences: Clinical research involves interactions with patients, diagnostic clinical materials or data, or populations in the following areas: (1) disease mechanisms (etiopathogenesis); (2) clinical knowledge, detection, diagnosis and natural history of disease; (3) therapeutic interventions including clinical trials of drugs, devices and instruments; (4) translational research; (5) behavioural research. This may also include health services research, including outcomes, and cost-effectiveness. Doctoral-level training in clinical sciences will strengthen candidate knowledge in a specific clinically important area with applications of research methodologies for conducting diverse clinical research. Nursing: The focus of this stream is to provide candidates with a rigorous training in research that is offered through coursework and mentorship with the aim of developing clinical scholars and faculty members capable of scientific inquiry for innovative practice and knowledge development for human health caring. Candidates will be required to produce an original piece of research that is important for human health from the perspective of nursing. Population and Public Health: The programme is designed for a wide variety of candidates, such as epidemiologists and biostatisticians, social and behavioural scientists, environmental scientists, health professionals and health administrators with an interest in population health. The principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioural sciences, environmental health and health policy and management will form the core of this discipline. Through course work, students would acquire a broad knowledge of population and public health; they would be required to pursue an in-depth study in an area of specialization within the population health framework. The University s PhD Programme in Health Sciences is accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). 3

A candidate may identify up to two potential research projects along with the supervisors who would be principal investigators of those research projects. However, the 500 word statement presented in the application should be based on the candidates top priority project. The second project serves as an option t to be admitted into the PhD programme in case the Primary Supervisor of their first priority project is unable to accommodate more than one student. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND DESIGN The PhD programme will be based on a total of 18 credits of coursework to be covered in the initial phase of the programme and followed by a period of three to four years assigned for original research. Upon completion of the coursework, confirmation for PhD candidacy will be based on passing the comprehensive examination and successful defence of the research proposal. The year-wise pattern and other details of the PhD programme for full-time students will be as follows: Year 1 Compulsory 14-credit Core Courses and Laboratory / Field experience. 4-credit Electives. Preparation of a presentation on the proposed research and its evaluation by a committee. Comprehensive exam. Written and oral presentation of the thesis synopsis and its defence in an open forum. Confirmation of PhD candidacy based on obtaining a minimum CGPA of 3.0 in the PhD coursework; passing the comprehensive exam; successful thesis synopsis defence; and completion of other requirements as per AKU policy. Year 2 Six-month extension to students not able to complete any of the above requirements for admission to the PhD programme by the end of Year 1. Research on the approved project. Years 3 and 4 Completion of Research Work and Thesis, as per AKU policy. 7

8 Coursework The coursework will comprise of: i) Compulsory Core Courses: These will be based on eight credits and will be offered during the winter semester. These are essential for all students; performance in these courses will determine confirmation of the PhD candidacy. ii) Discipline-specific Core Courses: These will be based on a minimum of six credits and will be offered during the winter, spring and fall semesters. These courses are essential for all students in that discipline. Like the compulsory core courses, performance in these courses will determine confirmation of the PhD candidacy. iii) Elective courses: Different elective courses will be available to students from which they can choose the ones related to their interest/specialty. These minimum four credit elective courses will be taken during the spring/fall semester. However, students may take core courses of other disciplines as their electives, which would need to be taken as and when offered by the concerned department. Research Work The basic research work for the Thesis will proceed in parallel with the Core and Elective coursework. Hence, at the time of enrolment the student will select a Principal Thesis Supervisor, and formulate a research project during Year 1. When developing the protocol / proposal, approval from the Ethics Review Committee will be required for research on human subjects and/or animals. The research project of a PhD (Health Sciences) student, leading to a thesis and the award of the PhD degree, will follow the AKU policy. MENTORSHIP In the PhD programme, mentoring will be a custom-built feature, and each student, will be assigned a mentor, who would in all likelihood be a senior faculty member. PLACEMENT SERVICES In cases where students require placements, i.e. to attend other institutions and work places for specific research exposure, data collection, laboratory or field-based work, etc., the primary responsibility will remain with the principal thesis supervisor and the student. The arrangement, however, will need to be approved by the FHS-PhD committee and communicated to the Board of Graduate Studies. 8
