1 SREENIDHI INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, GHATKESAR, HYDERABAD SECTION ONE: Unique context, mission, size and shape Sreenidhi Institute of Science & Technology (SNIST) was established by Sree Educational Society in the year Over the last 11 years the institution has developed into a well performing one and is the only institution under the jurisdiction of J.N.T. University, Hyderabad, chosen for World Bank assistance under TEQIP. There are more than 300 Engineering Colleges in this region. SNIST started with a modest intake of 260 in 5 U.G. courses. At present, the annual intake is about 1100 into 7 U.G. and 8 P.G. courses. In the admission process, based on the choice of the students it is the second most preferred Engineering College among 628 Engineering Colleges in the State. Our college is rated in the top 2% of Engineering Colleges in India based on the surveys conducted by National s like Outlook, Week and Competition Success Review in the last 3 years. College records its deep sense of appreciation to World Bank, NPIU and SPFU for the financial assistance and guidance provided under TEQIP. Enrolments: Bachelor of Engineering (B.Tech) level offering 7 courses with intake of 840 students Master of Engineering (M.Tech) level offering 6 courses with intake of 228 students Ph.D with current enrolment of 26. Degree levels Bachelor of Technology Master of Technology, M.B.A. and M.C.A. Doctorate in Engineering, Business Management, Sciences & English. Degrees granted: No. of students who were awarded degrees in the year 2008 Undergraduate - 55 Masters - 99 Doctorate - 10 Teaching staff: Total of 273 including 35 Professors, 55 Associate Professors, 178 Asst. A parent nominated by College SECTION TWO: Decision authority Enrolments: Admissions to B.Tech Courses is based on EAMCET, a State Level Entrance Examination Conducted by A.P. State Council of Higher Education, Govt. of A.P. The intakes are as per AICTE approvals. 30% of the seats are filled by the management of the institution and 70% by the Convenor appointed by APSCHE. Admissions to M.Tech courses is based on GATE Score and PGECET, a state-wide entrance examination conducted by APSCHE, Govt. of A.P. The intakes are as per AICTE approvals. Admission to Ph.D is based on entrance examination conducted by concerned University and an interview as per the guidelines of UGC/AICTE Staffing ratio: All India Council for Technical Education fixed the staffing ratio as stated herein: Faculty for UG courses: 1:15 Cadre ratio 1:2:6 for Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors) Faculty for PG courses: 1 Professor and 2 Assoc. Professors, or 2 Professors and 1 Assoc. Professor The non-teaching staff is of two types technical and non-technical. The norms for non-teaching staff are also satisfied. 2
3 Budget allocation: The tuition fee for engineering colleges is fixed by the Fee Fixation Committee appointed by the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh in pursuance of the orders of Honorable Supreme Court of India. This takes care of salaries, maintenance and development. Academic structures, curriculum, delivery and use of technology: The College has applied to UGC for Deemed to be University Status The syllabi is framed by BOS constituted by J.N.T. University with academic, industry and R&D experts. College has membership in Board of Studies and provide inputs. The syllabi is revised every two years to take into account the latest developments. The same is approved by Academic Council a higher body Academic and Financial decision are taken by Head, guided by the Principal and in turn guided by Governing Body. Quality assurance/standards (including assessment of student work and teachers performance): The College is reaccredited by NBA of AICTE some courses for 5 yeas and others for 3 years. The college is applying for NBA re-accreditation. The College is following the Credit system in all the branches of four year B.Tech Programmes from the inception compatible with global practices. A Rigorous evaluation system is in force to evaluate the performance the students. A Performance Appraisal is in force, i.e by students, by the superiors and best teacher awards re given every year to those who have excellent feed backs. Adjudged 30 th position in 2006 among 1500 self financing Engineering Colleges in India by Outlook Adjudged 30 th position in 2007 among 1800 self financing Engineering Colleges in India by Outlook Adjudged 30 th position in 2008 among 2000 self financing Engineering Colleges in India by Week Adjudged 25 th position in September, 2008 among 2100 Self financing and Government Engineering Colleges in India by Competition Success Review Adjudged 2 nd position in September, 2008 among 640 Self financing and Government Engineering Colleges in A.P. by Competition Success Review. Links with industry and local communities: The College established a close linkage with Engineering and IT industries in and around Hyderabad. Four weeks internship is offered at Second Semester of Third Year B.Tech. during Summer Vacation. The following are the industries with which the college entered into MOU 1. Cherlapalli Industries: ECE, ECM, EEE, Mech, CSE, IT & Biotec Association with 400 Industries 2. There are a number of industries with which each dept. is associated for R&D and consultancy activities. Structure of the Governing board, recruitment and TOR of governors: As given at Section 1 item.5. Responsibilities/decision making areas of the Governing body? To hold, control and administer the TEQIP funds of the college. To administer all funds placed at the disposal of the college for specific purposes. To define the duties of Faculty /staff of the College assigned for the purpose. To delegate any of its powers to the Secretary/Correspondent or Principal or to a Committee from among its own members or to any teaching staff member of the College. SECTION THREE: Recent reforms related to governance Constitution of Governing Body: 3
4 The Board of Governors was constituted for dealing with various activities of the institution. Govt. of A.P. nominated two officials for this committee and besides this, the Principal, the Director, the Dean (Acad. & Admin.), the Chairman, the Secretary / Correspondent and 3 others nominated by the Society are the members. The aspects such as procurement of goods, civil works, faculty development, staff development, formal and non-formal networking, services to community and development plan for weaker sections of the society such as SC, ST, BC and Women categories. Constitution of Curriculum Development Advisory Committee Constitution of R&D Advisory Committee Constitution of Industry Consultancy Centre Establishment of permanent services to Community Centre Decentralization in the functioning of different Schools of the college The various units that are functioning are: School of Computer Science and Informatics School of Electronics School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering School of Biotechnology School of Mechanical Engineering School of Management Studies School of Sciences & Humanities The above schools are being given the following powers, similar to the powers given to Constituent Colleges of Universities: Administrative Office Co-ordination Committee for Academic and Examinations. Staff Council R&D and Consultancy Committee Curriculum Development Committee Games, Sports and Cultural Events Committee Technical Events and Seminars Committee Finance Committee SECTION FOUR: Lessons for other institutions: The changes taken place in SNIST after it was short listed for financial assistance under TEQIP are as given below: 1. The college has improved enormously with regard to effective instruction and quality research due to the funds received under TEQIP. Thus high quality teaching and high quality research are ensured. A number of research papers are published during the TEQIP period. A number of research projects are internally funded leading to bigger projects, which were submitted to various funding agencies such as AICTE, ISRO etc. 2. Autonomy to different Schools of College: The following schools are given autonomy with regard to administration, academic, examination and finance. School of Mechanical Engineering School of Computer Science and Informatics Engineering School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering School of Electronics Engineering School of Biotechnology School of Management Studies 4
5 3. This is resulting in more effective management of various schools to make them more effective for teaching, research and consultancy. 4. The college has started new programmes in PG and had increased intakes in UG programmes. 5. Faculty Development Programs: The college has conducted about 40 refresher courses for the benefit of teachers of various schools before its entry to TEQIP. By now another 70 courses are added. The number of times teachers who were deputed to undergo training programmes in India and abroad during the TEQIP period is 406. This has helped in improving the capabilities of the teachers for more effective teaching. 6. Establishment of Advisory Committee for Curriculum development and Research and Establishment of Industry Consultancy Centre: Establishment of Entrepreneurship Development Cell: Establishment of Technology Development and Test Centre: Establishment of Innovation and Incubation Centre: 7. Accreditation of all eligible programs: After going into TEQIP, all UG and PG courses which are eligible for submission of application for accreditation were accredited which is a very rare achievement. In fact this was done in pursuance of the provisions of TEQIP and this has helped the institution to get strengthened enormously. 8. International activities: Due to the image the SNIST has built over a period of time and after coming into TEQIP, a number of foreign Universities have visited the institute for collaboration and to enter into articulation agreements. The most significant articulation agreements are given below: a. IIT, Chicago has entered into a comprehensive agreement for exchange of students and faculty. All the graduates who are pursuing for MS at this University are given 50% tuition fee waiver, which is leading to a large number of bright students joining IIT, Chicago. There are many students at UG level who have moved over to IIT, Chicago with scholarship to pursue their BS programs. b. Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, New York, a 76 year-old institution offering graduate programs in the aviation related courses has entered into MoU with Sreenidhi for offering B.S. programs in EET (Avionics option), BS Airline Management and BS Airport Management. In pursuance of this agreement Indian students can study all the 4 years with us as per the curriculum of Vaughn College and get B.S. Degree from this University in U.S. The tuition fee charged for these courses is about one-sixth of the tuition fee charged in Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, USA and also 25% of the subjects are taught by the specialists in some core subjects related to the above three programs. Indo-US Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE): - An organization established for faculty development of Indian Engineering Colleges has appreciated this agreement and they wanted such collaborations to be emulated by other institutions in India. 5
