1 Northampton Madras Universities Partnership course on M.Sc International Environmental Management 2 - year part-time On-line course On The Indian Subcontinent is a region that is currently experiencing considerable climatic change. According to the Department for International Development (DFID), environmental considerations such as climatic variability play a key role in humanitarian work, as they can make the environmental hazards worst and can also impact upon humanitarian operations and long-term recovery. In addition, as the fourth largest emitter of green house gases in the world, and with close links between management of the environment and the health, well-being and economic prosperity of the country, environmental management has been identified as a priority area by the Government of India. In a unique collaboration, the Universities of Madras and Northampton have developed a Masters degree programme in Environmental Management. M.Sc in International Environmental Management provides an exciting and unique opportunity to benefit from a modular part-time programme of studies, and gain a degree from a UK university. The learning and teaching is primarily delivered via a Virtual Learning Environment, fully supported by Module Learning Packs and academic tutors from both Universities to provide web, , text, telephone and face-to-face week long workshops held twice annually at the University of Madras. The part-time nature of the awards allows the balancing of the demands of family and the workplace, with the attraction of gaining post-graduate qualifications. The Masters programme is supported by the Higher Education strand of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). MSc International Environmental Management and associated interim awards have been specifically designed to meet the needs and ever growing sustainability demands of a rapidly developing modern India Delivered at the University of Madras in a range of formats (part-time, full-time and blended learning) it aims to provide students from a diversity of backgrounds with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge at postgraduate level that will enable them to become effective environmental managers. The aim is for students to develop the critical, analytical skills associated with postgraduate training as well as acquiring a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental management, and be trained to undertake the research required to tackle environmental issues. In addition to the acquisition of subject-specific skills and knowledge, the programmes of study will equip its graduates with a range of transferable skills.

2 We offer three levels of study in the programme: The Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) The Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) The Masters (180 credits) Delivered via the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), students undertake either three (3) (Certificate level), six (6) (Diploma), or seven (7) (Masters) modules to complete their programme of studies. Module content is delivered via the VLE, and is supported by Module Learning packs which contain text, videos, Power Point slides, academic papers and other electronic resources. Within the VLE, students can communicate with staff and fellow students. A University and portal allows access to a wide range of personal development skills resources. A Specialist librarian also supports the students in obtaining the best use of the ever increasing wealth of web-based documentation, including a large range of academic e-journals and e-books. The teaching team will also support students using telephone and face-to-face meetings and workshops. Programme Aims The overall aims are: to provide an advanced vocational course in environmental management, suitable for both graduate students from a range of first-degree backgrounds and disciplines, and professionals to meet the needs and demands of the Indian subcontinent; to enable students to develop an understanding of an integrated approach to environmental management in accordance with Indian governmental and international policy statements on sustainability; to enable students to have a broad understanding of the environmental, economic, ethical and social implications of environmental management; to provide comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles and policies which underpin wastes management in the Indian subcontinent; to enable students to develop the skills required to assess, analyse and offer practicable sustainable solutions to environmental issues such as climate change;

3 to enable active and autonomous learning to be developed through the use of real problems and case study materials; to develop key skills including problem-solving abilities, practical competencies, critical appraisal and communication skills; to develop qualitative and quantitative skills in research methods; to analyse, interpret and present data in subject-specific conventions; to develop awareness and understanding of ethical issues and risk management in research; to provide the opportunity for students to undertake and report upon an advanced practical project in a topical area of wastes management of their choosing (MSc only) What and how do you study? The module at Certificate and Diploma level are worth 20 credits and each take 12 weeks to complete. This includes time specifically set aside so that you can focus on working on assignments. The course has a modular structure with each module covering specific areas including: A. Research & Analytical Methods B. Climate Change and Risk Management C. Much of your study will involve working in your own time, following a structured programme of work delivered in a Virtual Learning Environment. But you will not be studying alone. Communication with fellow students and tutors through , discussion boards and online seminars are just some of the ways we encourage interaction. Students also get to meet tutors at workshops held at the University of Madras. On average, most students need to study for about hours per week, although it may be more or less depending on your background and study experience. Flexibility is a unique characteristic of the awards you choose where and when to study home work, daytime, weekends, evenings. Teaching & Learning Methods by Distance Learning The Course will be delivered in a range of formats - intensive block teaching and distance learning. Irrespective of the mode of delivery all students will have online access to easy-to-follow Module Learning Materials containing many stimulating activities. Candidate support includes and telephone access to tutors, access to internet based academic journal databases and to the University of Northampton and University of Madras libraries.

5 Assessment All modules that are assessed by coursework alone, with no examinations. The coursework itself takes a variety of forms, and there are between two and three items of assessment for each module. Assessment methods include: reports, data analysis/interpretation, case studies, audits and essay, research dissertation (MSc only) and time constrained tasks. The module assessments are designed so that students can demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes. Attendance The course consists of a series of modules studied independently through a carefully structured programme of work supported by a weeklong workshops held twice annually at the University of Madras. You study one module at a time, taken simultaneously with other people on your course enabling you to interact with other students. Each module takes 12 weeks to complete. Career opportunities Graduates of this programme will typically find work or will already be working in: government ministries and related agencies, performing environmental planning and/or policy analysis work; private companies and consultancies, providing an environmental analysis of work being undertaken; corporations implementing programmes to meet goals of social and environmental responsibility; research and educational institutions involved in environmental management and sustainable development; international and non-governmental organisations concerned with economic development and environmental change; charitable trusts and organisations carrying out conservation and educational field work.

6 About us The partnership between the University of Northampton and the University of Madras at Chennai, India, was established in It brought together the established expertise of e-learning and environmental management from the University of Northampton, and the strengths of University of Madras in specialist areas like sustainability and Geo-informatics. The University of Madras, established in 1857, is one of a handful of universities in India to have been awarded the top-rated 'five star' accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC), and has been identified as one of five Centres of Excellence by the Indian University Grants Commission. The University of Northampton received full university status in 2005, though it had to convince the Privy Council that a Royal Decree signed by King Henry III in 1265 following the Battle of Lewes, which banned the establishment of a university in Northampton, should be ignored. It offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees with over 250 courses as well as foundation degrees, diplomas and a variety of postgraduate opportunities up to Ph.D. level. It is one of only a handful of universities in the UK that is able to offer two-year fast-track degrees (currently for management and marketing only) though it also offers four-year extended degrees that include a year's placement in industry. The University is internationally renowned for Environmental Science and Wastes Management education and research. Other centres of excellence include Centre for Children and Youth (childhood and Children's Geographies), Transpersonal Psychology, Leather Technology and Lift Engineering. Facilities Infrastructures and Facilities at Partner Institutions The Department of Geography at the University of Madras has excellent technical facilities in laboratories for Geographical Information Systems, Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing connected through WINDOWS 2003 SERVER (alternative LINUX). The Department is equipped with hardware and software resources for scanning maps for data conversion, GIS Applications, Digital Image Processing and Advanced Statistical Analysis and GPS Surveys.
