1 Title: Therapy in Spanish! Activity Type: Home-Study (web-based) CEU s & Type: 0.6 CEU s (6 contact hours). Type One: This workshop will teach therapists specific skills for evaluation and treatment intervention with patients or clients. Description: Evaluate and treat Spanish-speaking clients with confidence. The purpose of this workshop it to learn how to integrate into therapists practice relevant Spanish vocabulary, sentences, and phrases to provide immediate care to a client. In this workshop you will learn Spanish salutation and introductions, vocabulary for body systems (the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems), common phrases for evaluation and treatment (including complementary therapies), common phrases for precaution and safety, common phrases for client and caregiver education. Therapists will have an opportunity to practice using medical Spanish through guided labs, individual exercises, minidialogues, and case studies. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to: Identify key relevant rehabilitation-specific Spanish words, phrases, and commands for evaluation and treatment Review appropriate usage of rehabilitation-specific Spanish words, phrases, and commands Through practice in small groups articulate and respond to key rehabilitation words, phrases, and commands Use course tools and handouts to perform a therapy evaluation or therapeutic exercise session (UE/LE) Online Objective: Practice with video and audio guided resources for Spanish pronunciation & phrases Take and pass at 75% exam to receive certificate

2 Outline of Online Program Content: Section One (2.5 Hours) Introduction: Spanish basic pronunciation Basic Spanish greetings, closings and introductions Spanish alphabet, numbers, colors, dates, months, and time. Linking words Section Two (26.5 min) Basic anatomical terms and basic movement commands (verbs) The head Upper extremities Lower extremities Section Three (2 Hours 15 min) Basic Spanish evaluation terms and phrases (client profile) Greetings, introductions to self and other medical healthcare personnel Common evaluation questions client profile: age, past/current medical, health and surgical procedure history; pain (degree, intensity, & quality); reason for referral; prior level of function (including mobility devices); social background; occupational history, hobbies & habits Home environment Basic phrases and questions for caregivers during evaluation Basic Spanish evaluation terms, phrases and basic commands (performance skills) Upper extremity terms (including hand) Upper extremity terms (including sensory terms) ROM MMT Basic Spanish evaluation terms, phrases and basic commands (performance skills)

4 Section Six (13.5 Min) Basic Spanish for therapeutic intervention (safety awareness and precautions) Common diagnosis medical precautions & safety awareness Section Seven (13.5 Min) Basic Spanish for therapeutic intervention (LE seated exercises) Basic Spanish for therapeutic intervention (UE seated exercises) Basic Spanish for therapeutic intervention (Caregiver & patient education) Closing Online Quiz Instructional Methods: PowerPoint presentation, reading of written material, demonstration and practice opportunities as well as application of knowledge through sample case studies. There is also an online exam for each one-hour of the course. Content Focus: Domain of OT: Client Factors Physical & Occupational Therapy Process: Evaluation and Intervention Target Audience: Occupational and Physical Therapists; Occupational and Physical Therapy Assistants. Learning level: Introductory - Information for practitioners with little or no knowledge of the subject matter. The information provides general introductory information. Continuing Education credit: A certificate of completion for 0.6 CEU s (6 contact hours) will be awarded for attendance of entire workshop. Each attendee must successfully complete the web-based multiple choice test with a score of 75% or higher to obtain their certificate. Attendee will be able to immediately print out their electronic certificate. Test records will be retained in the approved provider records. Course Director: Sabrina Castaneda, M.S., MOT, OTR, CYTh, E-RYT500, Certified Pilates Instructor, has been a rehabilitation specialist for nearly twenty years. Sabrina is fluent in Spanish and French. Sabrina is a licensed and registered occupational therapist, certified yoga therapist and teacher and

5 certified Pilates instructor. Sabrina has graduate degrees in Human development & family studies with a minor in psychology, occupational therapy with a minor in psychology. She is currently completing her doctorate in occupational therapy. Post-graduate studies and minors include art therapy, writing, and neuroscience. She is the founder and director of Atha yoga and Pilates School which certifies yoga therapists and teachers and Pilates instructors. She is lead teacher at her studio in Dallas, Texas which provides a variety of yoga classes to the general public and director of continuing education for HealthLinkRx. Sabrina has created and presented a variety of workshops for stress management, health promotion and wellness at the corporate level and as a volunteer for underserved populations. Sabrina has found that through her programs many of her clients have found practical, natural, healthful practices enabling them to handle life s stresses in constructive and balanced ways.
