3 District Citizens Advisory Committee (DCAC) Final Meeting The DCAC final meeting and thank you dinner will be Tuesday evening at Hope Street Academy. Dogs on the Lawn will feature grilled hot dogs, chips, salads and dessert for $5, followed by the Trojan Band on the Veranda concert which will feature the traditional classic 1812 Overture complete with howitzers. It s an opportunity for students to celebrate a successful school year, but also enjoy friendly competition, fresh air, and lots of healthy physical activity. Academy students attend HPHS but are by themselves without the distractions of peer pressure from upperclassmen. On Friday Academy students will have their crossover ceremony into the upper classes of HPHS. 7 Sunday, May 11 th Topeka High Music The Topeka High Jazz Band and Madrigals will both perform special Mother s Day concerts Sunday. The Jazz Band will perform at the Gage Park Amphitheatre while the Madrigals will hold their concert in the historic Topeka High Library. But few are aware that in the category of special needs, TPS serves a child until they are 21, with the ultimate goal of helping them become a productive citizen of the community. Several such TPS students with special needs are overcoming tremendous obstacles to accomplish remarkable things. One young lady defined as suffering from mental retardation is enrolled in Honors Government class. She is holding a B grade, with no extra help. She also works in the VIP program in which she works as an aide to surgical nurses at Stormont Vail hospital. Other former and current special needs students are working at Walgreen s. The results have been very positive. One young man with autism who rarely speaks to anyone is achieving success working through the Walgreen s program.
