1 Mundo Verde Extended Day Program Team ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM Gloria Quirarte Extended Day Program Coordinator Gloria supervises Mundo Verde s Extended Day Programs including the Before, After & Evening Extension Services. Previously, she was Director of Operations at Multicultural Community Services & served as Executive Assistant to the Director at CentroNía. As a Program Specialist for Hispanas Unidas in Texas, she developed curriculum & taught in an after school program enhancing the selfesteem & life skills of middle school girls. By forging a partnership with the Southwest School of Art & Craft she integrated art workshops into the program. Gloria has an MA in social cultural anthropology from John Hopkins, a BA in political science from Swarthmore College, and in her spare time relishes in the art of making embellished boxes. Fatima Mohamed Front Desk Receptionist and Classroom Enrichment Associate Fatima served as a front desk receptionist and substitute at Mundo Verde this year. She is a native Washingtonian, Egyptian and Nicaraguan, and travel enthusiast. She is graduating from the University of Maryland this fall with a degree in American Studies. Miguel San Juan Front Desk Receptionist & Classroom Associate Miguel served as the front desk receptionist and occasional substitute during the year at Mundo Verde. He has two years of experience working with students in athletic and educational settings. He is a die-hard soccer player and fan, and a product of Wilson Senior High School. Christian Guevara Front Desk Receptionist & Classroom Associate Christian Guevara began serving as a substitute and front desk support toward the end of Mundo Verde s school year. Christian has three years of experience working with youth in Scouts and summer enrichment programming. His family is from Guatemala. He grew up around children while shadowing his mom, Mundo Verde s very own Ana Guevara! He currently attends the University of Maryland. His favorite sport is soccer and he s a huge fan of the Redskins! SPECIALS TEAM Paola Calderón Enrichment Photography Lead Paola Calderón is a native Washingtonian of Guatemalan & Salvadorian heritage. In her formative years, she attended Oyster Bilingual. She attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design in which she studied photography and fine art. Previously, Paola has volunteered and taught in Guatemala and at the Latin American Youth Center in DC. During the 2013 Summer Program, she served as Mundo Verde's photography teacher.
2 Atish (Taku) Chakravarti Bricks4Kidz Enrichment Specialist K-2nd Taku has four and a half years of experience working with high school and elementary aged students. He lived and worked in the Sierra North of Puebla, Mexico where he taught English and philosophy to high school students. Prior to joining Mundo Verde Taku also organized migrant laborers in California and worked in rural education in India. He has his bachelor s in philosophy from Swarthmore College. In addition to speaking English, he speaks Spanish and Bengali. David Hidalgo Enrichment PE Lead and Before School Program Manager David has 14 years of experience working with youth in various capacities as a tutor, athletic coach, and in community service settings, among others. He was previously a Playworks Coordinator at Tyler Elementary for 2 years and spent the last 2 years at Brent Elementary serving as the PE Teacher, Before Care Coordinator and 1 st Grade Instructional Assistant. He started Capitol Kicks, which teaches students the fundamentals of soccer. Rhiannon Landesberg Enrichment Yoga Lead Rhiannon is a certified children s yoga teacher who comes to Mundo Verde with experience as a yoga and dance educator. She has implemented movement and peace education programs through Dance4Peace in D.C., and taught children s yoga programs in public schools through YoKid, based in Alexandria, VA. Her positions as a teacher s assistant, aid, and camp counselor in D.C. and New York have nurtured her passion for working with youth. Rhiannon is a graduate of American University, where she has a bachelor s in international studies. Cherish Pennington Enrichment Art Lead Cherish is Mundo Verde s art teacher and has been with the school since summer of A graduate of the Corcoran College of Art + Design where she has a BFA in fine art photography, Cherish has also done coursework in art and early childhood development at Sierra College in Rocklin, California. She has taught students in various capacities for the past 17 years, five of which have been in school settings. She has spent the past several years in D.C. working with children and families. As an intern for the Youth and Family Program at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, she designed activities for the participating youth. She was also an assistant teacher working with preschool students at School For Friends. In addition, Cherish is a freelance photographer whose work has been part of exhibitions such as NEXT at the Corcoran: Class of 2012; Examinations in Light: PROject project; and Fotoweek DC International Art Festival, among others.
3 PRE-KINDERGARTEN ENRICHMENT TEAM Elizabeth Ayala Enrichment Associate Staff Elizabeth has four years working with children in early childhood settings. She has a natural ease grounded in her previous work experiences in several capacities at daycares and nursery schools in D.C., including the Summer Youth Program Daycare at Columbia Heights Education Campus, Love and Care Nursery, and David s Stars Early Childhood Center. Originally from Peru, she is pursuing her associate s in early childhood education from Central Texas College. Eduardo Castillo Enrichment Associate Staff Edward joined the Mundo Verde team as both an operations and after school associate in He has worked with VISIONS Service Adventures in Peru where he leads community service and cultural immersion programs for teenagers from the United States. Originally from Cali, Colombia Edward lived for 12 years in Barcelona, Spain before moving to Washington, D.C. in He enjoys spending time outdoors, traveling, music and animals. Karla Coyuchi Enrichment Associate Staff Karla s experience working with youth includes volunteer service with the National Park Service, a classroom assistantship at her church, and volunteer work at Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) where she attended. She is pleased to be part of the Mundo Verde team. Christian Guevara Enrichment Associate Staff See above Jennifer Hernandez Enrichment Lead Staff Jennifer has three years of experience working with early childhood-aged children. She served as an enrichment specialist for PK3 at Mundo Verde for the past two years. She was born in Washington, D.C. and her parents are from El Salvador. She is currently enrolled at Trinity University. Jenni Hakala Enrichment Lead Staff Jenni s professional background is in teaching and communications. She taught early childhood in her native Finland for 8 years. For the past two years, she has been serving as a volunteer tutor in a Spanish classroom at Bancroft Elementary where her two children attend. Jenni is originally from Helsinki, Finland. Ana Dilia Marquez Enrichment Lead Staff Ana Dilia has served as an Enrichment Specialist and Classroom Support staff at Mundo Verde since Originally from El Salvador, she has completed a Certification in Child Development and taken many courses at UDC and Montgomery College as well as art and fashion illustration classes. Ana has been working in the child development field for the past 14 years and has worked with newborns - 5th graders. Fatima Mohammed Enrichment Associate See above
4 KINDERGARTEN ENRICHMENT TEAM Nely Cameron Enrichment Associate Staff Nely has served as an Enrichment Specialist and classroom support staff at Mundo Verde. She has a child development certificate from El Salvador and has worked with children of early childhood ages for three years. Miguel San Juan Enrichment Associate Staff See above Elena Gomez-Morris Enrichment Lead Staff Elena recently joined Mundo Verde as an enrichment associate. She has worked with children in various capacities for nine years, seven with special needs children. Originally from Colombia, she independently moved to the US after high school to study ESL and later got her degree in Modern Languages and linguistics with a minor in music from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. For the last four years she has been working as an interpreter for the Johns Hopkins Hospital network and for the school system in Maryland. She enjoys spending time outdoors and travelling. Claudia Loayza Enrichment Lead Staff Claudia Loayza has seven years of experience working with early childhood-aged students. She has served as an enrichment specialist this year at Mundo Verde. She was born in Peru and came to the United States at the age of 20. She Volunteered at Cool Spring Elementary for 2 years and for one year at Cherokee Lane where her daughter attended school. She s currently studying Child Development at Montgomery County Community College. 1 st GRADE ENRICHMENT TEAM Natalia Carrillo Enrichment Lead Staff Natalia served as an enrichment specialist with PK4 during the year at Mundo Verde. She has a bachelor s in early childhood education from Inca Garcilaso de la Vega University in Lima, Peru. Currently, she is pursuing a bachelor s in human development at the University of the District of Columbia. Before Mundo Verde, she worked for four years as a Spanish Inclusion Teacher at DC Bilingual Public Charter School (CentroNía), and as a classroom teacher in Peru for five years. Viviana Chieme - Enrichment Lead Staff Viviana has worked with children for a total of eight years. She recently worked at E.W. Stokes as the physical education teacher with 1st-6 th graders. She then joined the Stokes after school team as the K-1st grade teacher prior to joining Mundo Verde s 2013 Summer Program and enrichment team. She has an international diploma as a yoga coach and is currently offering support services to children at Clínica del Pueblo. She has worked in a hospital in Thailand and Chang Mai, Bangkok and has her master s in mental health practice. Viviana is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
5 Joni Curtis Enrichment Associate Staff Joni has four years of experience working with children and youth. A native of Alameda, California, Joni relocated to Washington, D.C. and has been working in elementary education since Prior to Mundo Verde, she taught English as a second language to preschoolers at an international school in Virginia, volunteered as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and interned with 6th grade at Bay Farm Elementary School in California. Joni loves teaching children to cook and garden! David (Kike kee-kay ) Moya Enrichment Associate Staff Kike moved to the U.S. from Costa Rica in 2012 and is originally from Colombia. He has been working as a graphic designer and is continuing his studies in Digital Animation at the University of Maryland. This will be Kike s second year working with Mundo Verde youth. He is excited to be part of the Enrichment Team at Mundo Verde again this year, as the dual mission of supporting bilingual literacy and sustainability are very important as we teach children how to help form a better future for our world. 2 nd GRADE ENRICHMENT TEAM Paola Calderón Enrichment Associate Staff See above Ana Guevara Enrichment Lead Staff Ana has served in Mundo Verde s enrichment team and as the teacher assistant for PK4. She has worked at the National Institute of Early Childhood Education in her native Guatemala. She has completed coursework in teaching and child development at Fitchburg State College and UDC. She has a certificate in early childhood education and has worked with children and youth for 24 years, more than 15 of these as a teaching paraprofessional in DC Public Schools. Before coming to Mundo Verde, she worked at John Tyler, Seaton, and Bancroft Elementary Schools. Daphne Johnson Behavior Intervention and Classroom Enrichment Associate Daphne has four years of experience working with students. She previously served as a classroom fellow at Mundo Verde. Prior to Mundo Verde she served with AmeriCorps at Washington Middle School for Girls as a tutor, volunteer coordinator, service learning liaison and assistant extended day coordinator. Prior to that, she worked as a reading tutor in a D.C. charter school. She holds a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Concepción Roque Enrichment Lead Staff Concepción has seven years of experience working with children and youth. She served as an Enrichment Specialist at Mundo Verde during the year and as a classroom associate during the Summer Program. Prior to Mundo Verde, Concepción worked at CentroNia s Early Childhood Learning Center for six years as a paraprofessional with PK-Kinder. She has her CDA from CentroNía and is originally from Juleaca, Peru.
