5 TEACHING PHILOSOPHY By Ashley Chisholm Art is a vital part of a student's curriculum and unleashes the richness of life. A truly complete education must include art in order for a student to become a well rounded individual. Art encompasses many elements of learning including creative problem solving, critical and conceptual thinking, technical skills, criticism, interpretation, expression and sensitivity to culture and society which surrounds us. In turn, while art allows students to learn through exploration of these various areas, students may also develop qualities such as self-confidence, and independence. In order for my students to experience the valuable aspects of an art education, it is imperative that I plan my lessons to be effective on many levels. When this is done correctly, students may learn and experience all of the elements of learning and the richness and beauty of art. In my lessons, I try to integrate ideas of self-identity, ethnicity, world issues and social justice while teaching technical skills as well as art history and appreciation. It is also critical to connect with what the students are learning in math, science, social studies, English, and music. As a teacher of art and a lifelong learner, it is important that I continue my own work as an artist alongside of my teaching. Producing my own artwork will always be one of the most valuable aspects of my life. It is vital to my students that I am always exploring possibilities within art, whether I am creating my own or examining how artists create. Students need a teacher who shares this important information so that the learning process is continually taking place. Art is une of the greatest areas of exploration in life. We should ensure that all students have the opportunity to discover if they are gifted in this area. Students need the chance to learn how it improves their lives, their world and helps them grow as individuals and as members of society. For students who struggle in other academic areas and are halted in their growth from a sense of failure, art might help them gain the confidence needed to tackle other subjects. As a teacher, my goal is to help students reach their full creative potential and the visual arts provide this priceless learning experience.
