2 Increase your potential with a Master of Arts in Teaching The Traditional MAT program allows eligible candidates to complete the MAT program and additional course work necessary for content preparation in their chosen certification area. You may also decide to pursue either the English as a Second Language (ESL), Preschool through Grade 3 (P 3), or Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD) endorsements while completing the MAT. The Accelerated MAT program allows eligible candidates to complete the master s program and certification in twelve months beginning in May in the following programs: elementary certification and secondary subject-specific certification in English, mathematics, science, social studies or Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade in art, Chinese, health and physical education, music, and Spanish. The accelerated MAT program with the English as a Second Language endorsement or Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement is an eighteen-month program beginning in January. A ttain a master s degree and teacher certification by enrolling in the Master of Arts in Teaching Initial Certification (MAT) program. The MAT program provides you with an opportunity to follow your dream of becoming a high school, middle school, elementary, or early childhood teacher. Whether you are a student who recently earned a bachelor s degree or someone seeking a career change, the MAT is your vehicle to becoming a fully certified educator. The latest in educational theory, technology, teaching strategies, and significant field-based experiences form the cornerstones of the MAT program. An exciting component of the MAT program is the early fieldwork requirement before student teaching. The early field experience provides supervised opportunities to visit schools and classrooms; observe students and teachers; and teach individuals, small groups, and large groups of students. Candidates must be available during days and times that schools are in session. Multiple endorsements can make you more marketable, including: MAT Secondary Track (9 12) Subject Specialization in biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, physical science, or social studies with English as a Second Language (ESL) (accelerated option available) MAT Secondary Track (9 12) Subject Specialization in biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, physical science, or social studies with Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement (accelerated option available) MAT Subject Specialization (K 12) Track in art, Chinese, music, or Spanish (accelerated option available) MAT Subject Specialization (K 12) Track in Chinese or Spanish with English as a Second Language (ESL) (accelerated option available) MAT Subject Specialization (K 12) Track in health and physical education For more information about these programs, visit specialization

3 Additional endorsements for MAT candidates MAT candidates may pursue additional endorsements for Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD), English as a Second Language (ESL), or Preschool through Grade 3 (P 3). A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution including a minimum of sixty liberal arts credits for elementary teacher certification or at least thirty credits in a coherent sequence of courses appropriate for secondary subject certification Satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see Web site for details) Two letters of recommendation Résumé Personal statement Evidence of substitute teaching license and an appropriate Praxis II test is preferred but not required Accelerated MAT Only: Evidence of the appropriate Praxis II test(s) for certification (prior to admission) A substitute teaching license is preferred but not required Application Deadlines Fall Semester: July 15 Spring Semester: November 15 Summer Sessions: May 1 invest in your future invest Graduate scholarship awards are available to matriculated students in all master s degree programs and are renewable for each semester of enrollment at Monmouth University. Award values are based on the total number of credits taken each semester and range from $800 to $4,200 per semester. Outstanding graduate students may be eligible for graduate assistantships. Partial-tuition scholarships are available to students who have completed a master s degree program at Monmouth University and who return to the University to matriculate for a second master s degree or certificate.
