Students work on one design concept, learning how to identify their specific market and creating 2D presentations and prototypes as part of the development process. On the basis of existing skill levels, students choose to present their concept through hand sketching, digital visualization, or prototyping of a 3D mock-up created from an existing sample. At the end of the New York City experience, students will have captured their concept development and research in the form of a process journal and a complete presentation. the art of luxury: processes, products, and strategies (June in New York and June 30 July 4 in London) PCSP 1004 Today the word luxury is applied so liberally to dwellings, holidays, fashions, and food products, to name just a few things that the term has become almost meaningless. Barely any product or service sector is untouched by the appellation. In this workshop, students consider the meanings of luxury and exclusivity and find working definitions of luxury experience. They acquire the practical tools needed to develop new premium brand positions and opportunities and build relationships between the brand and the consumer. The course introduces emotive brand positioning factors that influence the development of brand values and presents examples from existing enterprises. It also offers students insight into factors companies should consider when attempting to build emotional connections with their customers. transatlantic trend spotting (July 7 11 in New York and July in London) PCSP 1007 This course helps students gain an understanding of the structures and patterns of trend development, the tools available for identifying emerging trends, and a framework for researching, presenting, and forecasting broader trend themes. Students learn how to analyze cultural data to identify patterns and make projections for new products and branding strategies. strategic design management: managing innovation, making ideas real (July 7 11 in New York and July in London) PCSP 1003 Make a business idea a reality. Students begin the course at Parsons and spend the first two days brainstorming business ideas in small and large groups. Examples of successful (and failed) startups are presented, along with a variety of small business structures and approaches drawn from three site visits to New York City s Silicon Alley. Students spend the third day presenting ideas to a panel of visiting entrepreneurs, who serve as a selection jury that chooses four or five winning ideas. Groups are then formed to develop the winning ideas through concept stages and into actual business models, with definition of products, markets, and organizational structure along with a fiscal plan. The week culminates with final presentations and critique. fashion communication and promotion (July 7 11 in New York and July in London) PCSP 1005 Explore the business of communication design in the fashion industry, studying fashion brands, products, and services. With an emphasis on fashion and lifestyle messaging, this course helps students explore key strategies that retailers and designers employ in selling online, from merchandising, distribution, and supporting technology to social communication strategies and tools. New media have created space for Web-based publications, new business models, and immediate global reach for brands. Learn how the changing face of retail is meeting the instant demand and evolving culture of communication technology. Explore the relationship between the creative processes and media that promote them. fashion design, process, and practice (June 23 July 3 in New York and July 8 18 in London) PCSP 1101 The course introduces students to design principles and creative standards in apparel design. In New York City, students focus on concepts, research, and visual presentations. In London, they learn about fashion construction, pattern cutting, draping, and sewing. Learn principles of fashion design and apply methods of designing fashion that will help you achieve successful results. Refine your vision as a fashion designer by learning to find and use sources of inspiration, discovering how strategic use of fabric and color can strengthen a designer s viewpoint, and developing ways of creating dynamic fabric stories that form well-merchandised groups. Find out what you need to be prepared for the professional world, including putting together a portfolio, writing a CV, and perfecting your interview techniques. urban design: reshaping the city street experience (June 23 July 3 in New York and July 8 18 in London) PCSP 1102 Ever wonder why a bus stop in New York City is different from one in London? This course looks at the design of urban artifacts as they take unique shape in a city environment. Understanding world-class cities, their inhabitants, and the part design plays in this process is a key focus of this workshop. Students explore and develop a specific typology of street furniture first in a New York City neighborhood and then in London. Students investigate and explore conditions in each city, then make a sitespecific design proposal on the basis of their observations. The iterative design process is accompanied by lectures and visits to prominent design studios, museums, and galleries in each city. DECORATIVE ARTS SEMINAR IN FRANCE the period room as curatorial practice graduate (July 7 25) PGHT 5732 Section A In this three-week intensive, students consider the origins and critical issues surrounding the period room and curatorial practice. The course begins with the relationship of the period room to the Panorama, the diorama of the Natural History Museum, and the nationalistic displays of the World s Fairs. Special attention is given to the history of the period room in French museums and historic houses. The period room raises many significant issues about museum display, but no less important are those concerning methodologies of social history and the history of decorative arts. Topics under consideration include the question of authenticity, the presence or invisibility of the curator, the notion of a period style, and the disjunction between the chronological moment of production and the moment of presentation. Each student chooses a period room from the mezzanine at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs or another significant interior from a museum or historic house in Paris such as the Musée Nissim de Camondo, the Musée Jacquemart-André, or the Musée and Château de Rueil Malmaison as a case study to critique. The course brings this discussion to the present and takes up the question of whether a modern period room can even exist. Although students may have the 30 Register at

17 opportunity to choose as their object of study a period room that suits their area of interest, they should keep in mind that this course is concerned primarily with curatorial practice rather than the history of decorative arts. DECORATIVE ARTS SEMINAR IN SCANDINAVIA scandinavian design: stockholm and helsinki graduate (June 23 July 4) PGHT 5731 Section A Students in this course examine the main features of Scandinavian design and culture from the 17th to the 20th century, focusing on built environments and the elements they contain, including architecture, interiors, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, industrial design, and glass. The course is held in Stockholm and Helsinki, capitals that share a long tradition of decorative arts and design. Coursework includes in-depth study of works by the noted Swedish architects and designers Gunnar Asplund and Carl Malmsten. Students visit sites and collections in and around Stockholm, such as major art and design museums, Drottningholm Palace, Skokloster, and the Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum. They travel to Dalarna and visit the Carl and Karin Larsson home in Sundborn. In Helsinki, the 2012 European Design Capital, students take advantage of the city s many cultural offerings and design activities. They visit important Finnish collections and sites such as the National Design Museum, Alvar Aalto s home and studio, Marimekko fabric printing workshops, and the Arabia factory and museum. On a day trip to Noormarkku, students visit Aalto s iconic Villa Mairea and Paimio Sanatorium and Erik Bryggman s Resurrection Chapel to experience design in situ.
