5 SO WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DRUPAL? WHEN COMPARED TO PROPRIETARY ALTERNATIVES... PROPRIETARY DRUPAL VENDOR LOCK-IN If the Vendor ever goes out of business, bought, or the vendor relationship changes, there is a risk of being stuck with a website no one knows how to operate or maintain. There is no vendor lock in. If a Drupal company or vendor ever goes out of business or the relationship changes, there are a well qualified group of other vendors who can take over the project. FLEXIBILITY COSTS / LICENSING There are typically a handful of extensions to any proprietary CMS system such as Shopping Cart, Forums, etc. All generally involve additional licensing and customization costs. Costs range from affordable to very expensive With more than 1,800 available modules, the vast majority of your site s requirements can be addressed with Drupal CMS and the available addon modules (in a shorter period time). Drupal has zero upfront software and upgrade acquisition cost. Nothing is proprietary. COMMUNITY & UGC TOOLS UGC Tools offered by proprietary CMS to date are very simple or lag the market significantly. Innovative communities are challenging to build. Drupal is a social publishing platform. It was built to support community and UGC out of the box either on the website itself, or integration with third parties like YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

7 CONCERN #1: DOES DRUPAL SCALE FOR HUGE WEBSITES? YES. 8 CONCERN #2: IS DRUPAL SECURE? YES. Open source software is as secure or more secure (in general) than commercial software. A good summary of the relevant issues can be found in this article from IBM: The security implications of open source software. In fact, the increased security of using open source was cited as one reason the White House switched to Drupal. Drupal has a very solid track record in terms of security, and has an organized process for investigating, verifying, and publishing possible security problems. Drupal's security team (over 30 people) is constantly working with the community to address security issues as they arise and distributing vulnerability reports and security fixes. Compare that to proprietary software where exploit fixes often take weeks and months. SOURCE:

9 CONCERN #3: HOW FLEXIBLE IS DRUPAL? YES. Drupal is extremely flexible. Drupal has a modular architecture. The core modules and the extensive collection of over 1,800 contributed modules enable the platform to adapt to many different sets of business requirements and designs. Furthermore, Drupal s services module enables the creation of APIs so other devices and platforms can access the CMS data. For example, iphone applications, mobile optimized websites, ipad apps, Facebook apps and anything else that comes along.
