3 Introduction The Cisco Smart Designs provide network solution implementation best practices to help streamline the installation process and reduce deployment risk. Cisco Smart Designs are created to assist partners in serving small business customers with a broad range of Cisco products packaged in purpose-built solutions. The flexibility of the overall Cisco Smart Design architecture facilitates the deployment of solutions in a phased approach, thereby ensuring investment protection. This bill of material document covers the Cisco Secure Network Foundation (SNF) solution, and the Cisco Unified Communication and wireless LAN solutions that are built on SNF. These solutions improve business productivity by providing Internet access, communication among employees/business partners from anywhere anytime, and secure network access to business servers to encourage business process automation. Secure Network Foundation (SNF) 2.5 Instead of providing a monolithic and all-encompassing network, SNF 2.5 implements a network having the most commonly used secure network capabilities, with options to further enhance them with additional capabilities for advanced deployment. The SNF 2.5 solution is based on wired networks, and includes routing, switching, security, network address translation, network quality of service (QoS), and virtual private networks (VPNs) to support mobile workers. It can be expanded, as the need arises, to incorporate a wireless network, voice services, and video applications. This solution already includes the foundation technologies such as security and QoS necessary to support such enhancements. More information can be found at the following URL: Network Topology The network topologies for the solution includes a WAN router, an aggregation switch, and up to four access switches, as shown in Figure 1. If a single access switch is sufficient to connect all devices connected to the network, a separate aggregation switch may not be necessary. However, even in that case, an aggregation switch may be used to aggregate traffic from multiple access switches to simplify cabling efforts. Figure 1. 4 Solution Functionalities The following functionalities are supported by SNF 2.5: Internet access Fast Ethernet or xdsl WAN connectivity Other WAN connectivity options (T1/E1, ISN) require different routers with appropriate integrated WAN ports, or appropriate network interface modules. Locally hosted servers accessible from the Internet (available in the 100 Users solution) Infrastructure security (protection against network attacks) Firewall security LAN security (Port Security, BPDU Guard, Storm Guard) WAN QoS Advance LAN QoS (available in the 100 Users solution) Mobile worker connectivity via Easy VPN or SSL VPN Configuration and management (Cisco Configuration Professional and Cisco Network Assistant) Voice ready Wireless ready Video surveillance ready To further simplify the deployment, SNF 2.5 has three solution options designed for different sizes of small businesses: 25 users, 50 users, or 100 users. Wireless Networking The Cisco WLAN Solution seamlessly integrates with Cisco Secure Network Foundation 2.5. It is capable of supporting up to 250 users. Using this solution, Cisco partners and resellers can help small businesses take the full advantage of wireless technology by deploying a reliable and secure Cisco Unified Wireless Network. The design guides and implementation guides for the following solutions can be found at the following URL: Network Overview The Cisco SNF solution includes systematic design considerations that result in minimal network interruption and ensure maintaining QoS when incrementally adding solution components, such as the Wireless LAN Solution Cisco Systems, Inc. Page 7 of 17
8 Depending on the business requirements and environmental characteristics, small businesses can choose one of two deployment models: standalone access point (AP)-based; or Wireless LAN Controller (WLC)-based. Figure 2 shows two topologies. On the left, the WLAN solution with standalone-aps integrated with a SNF network. The standalone deployment is for small business customers with up to 100 wireless client devices located in any site. The solution introduces intra-site wireless connectivity by simply adding wireless APs to the SNF architecture with the capability for future migration to the WLC-based solution (shown in the figure on the right) for additional functionality, such as roaming across subnets and guess access. When your business evolves, a WLC-based deployment can be chosen for enhanced functionality. A WLC is a Cisco device that centrally manages lightweight APs and wireless LAN data traffic. Key enhancements include: Improved scalability Allows expansion to support more users within one location Inter-VLAN roaming Permits roaming among different subnets (Layer 3 roaming) Secure guest access Provides guests with limited access to the WLAN (for example, public Internet access) while keeping the network secure 2009 Cisco Systems, Inc. The design guides and implementation guides for the following solutions can be found at the following websites: Solution Options This section discusses the high-level business requirements for Cisco Unified Communications solutions and provides guidance to help partners select optimal solutions. Factors affecting the selection of design include total number of voice users, number and types of business locations, and the level of control required at branch office locations. The most common scenarios for small business Unified Communication requirements include the following: 2009 Cisco Systems, Inc. Page 9 of 17
10 Smart Business Communications System (SBCS) Small businesses with up to 104 voice users; features up to five major business sites, and 6-10 remote office and mobile workers per site.
