1 . Data Sheet Cisco Configuration Assistant Configuring a Small Business s Routing, Switching, Wireless, Security, and Voice Network with a Single, Easy-to-Use Tool Today s businesses depend more than ever on network-based applications and communications tools. However, modern business networks can encompass a wide range of wired and wireless networking, security features, and voice technologies. Making sure the network is configured and operating properly is a complex, costly, and timeconsuming task. For value-added resellers that support small business customers or smaller organizations with limited IT resources, configuring all of the routing, switching, wireless, and voice solutions in the network for optimal security and performance can be especially challenging. Cisco has created a comprehensive, easy-to-use network configuration tool that addresses these challenges. Cisco Configuration Assistant simplifies the task of configuring, deploying, and administering Cisco small business network solutions. Designed specifically for small business networks serving up to 100 users, this PC-based application with a simple graphical user interface (GUI) discovers all devices in the network and can help configure the Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series, Cisco 500 Series Secure Routers, Cisco Catalyst Express and ESW 500 Series Switches, and Cisco Mobility Express wireless access points and controllers. After the network is deployed, Cisco Configuration Assistant can generate status reports, synchronize passwords, and upgrade software across all of the Cisco small business network devices. Together, these capabilities improve the security and performance of the network and substantially reduce the time the system administrator must devote to deploying and configuring the network. A Comprehensive Communications Solution Cisco Configuration Assistant is an integral component of the Cisco Smart Business Communications System (SBCS). This integrated system of voice, security, and wireless networking products provides an affordable, comprehensive communications solution that is easy to deploy and use while allowing for business growth. With the Cisco SBCS, even smaller organizations can provide employees and customers with highly secure anywhere, anytime access to the information they need to communicate and interact more effectively. The solution is complemented by award-winning support and flexible financing options delivered through local Cisco partners. Cisco Configuration Assistant provides comprehensive configuration, deployment, and ongoing network management support by the system administrator for the entire line of products in the Cisco SBCS. (For a list of all supported devices and limits, see Table 1.) Simplified Configuration A single configuration error in just one device in the network can impede the performance of essential business applications and leave a business vulnerable to a damaging security breach, so proper device configuration is critical. However, even a small office network can contain numerous routing, switching, wireless, and voice solutions. Manually configuring all of them can be tedious and time-consuming. Cisco Configuration Assistant simplifies this process through an easy-to-use GUI. This integrated approach encompasses: 2009 Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. 3 Switch configuration: Cisco Configuration Assistant provides a quick and easy way to configure LAN ports on the Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series, Catalyst Express and ESW 500 Series Switches. The tool enables dynamic VLAN assignment of voice and data traffic and simplifies activation of QoS, security, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) features. The Smartports feature in Cisco Configuration Assistant allows each switch port to be customized to match the device that is connected, whether it is an IP phone, PC, access point, router, or LAN switch. Cisco Configuration Assistant Features Cisco Configuration Assistant provides the following features and benefits: Multiple network views: Users can view the status of devices and monitor the network from three perspectives: the System Dashboard, Topology View, or Front Panel View. The System Dashboard (Figure 1) is an intuitive, Flash-based view for displaying common system metrics. The System Dashboard comes with a drag-and-drop palette that allows you to select which metrics to show or hide. Displayable metrics include system status, event notifications, and CPU, memory, PoE, flash, or voic storage utilization. The rich Topology View graphically represents the types of devices in the network as well as providing detailed information about device status, physical connections, and various monitoring capabilities all in a single view (Figure 2). The Front Panel View displays all switches and routers in the network simultaneously, along with the state, duplex, and speed of ports. The Front Panel View also allows users to apply settings across multiple ports or switches when configuring features such as VLANs. In addition, users can verify optimal ongoing network performance by generating comprehensive, real-time reports of network inventory and health. Figure 1. 4 Figure 2. Topology View in Cisco Configuration Assistant Dynamic discovery: Cisco Configuration Assistant s unique discovery capabilities provide users with total control when discovering network devices to create a community. Users can discover devices by entering a seed IP, a range IP, a subnet IP, or a single IP address. This feature provides flexibility and time savings when designing the topology. Improved network visibility with continual monitoring: Users can quickly assess the status of switches and routers, including packet errors; temperature; PoE status; and bandwidth, CPU, memory, and ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) usage all from a single window. Users can select the specific health categories to monitor. For each category selected, the switch with the highest usage is displayed in the quick view. Users can access a more comprehensive view by clicking the Details button. Simplified network reporting: Users can print easy-to-read reports, such as bandwidth utilization reports. The enhanced print option even allows users to fit the Topology View or Front Panel View onto one page. Enhanced security for configuration and monitoring activities: Cisco Configuration Assistant provides a secure connection between the Cisco Configuration Assistant client and each connected device in the network to safeguard all sensitive information. Drag-and-drop upgrades: The drag-and-drop Cisco IOS Software upgrade feature simplifies the process of upgrading the software on a Cisco SBCS device. Users can download the latest software version simply by dragging the update s icon from the PC desktop and dropping it onto the icon of the target device depicted in the Topology View. This process eliminates the need to specify the Cisco IOS Software filename or select a specific TFTP server IP address when performing updates. This process can also be used to deploy Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express images, phone loads, music on hold files, and language packs onto the router Cisco Systems, Inc. 5 Dynamic application updates: Users can stay up to date on the latest versions and security patches of Cisco Configuration Assistant through dynamic application updates. With this function, users can be assured that when a newly purchased Cisco device is added to the network, it is automatically supported and secured. Users have the option of updating at application startup, or checking at weekly or monthly intervals. Notification of issues: The event notification feature alerts users if a potential problem arises with a device in the network, if a configuration change is required, or if a new version of Cisco Configuration Assistant is available for download. A dialog box provides all necessary information regarding the event, including the time, description, and, if applicable, suggestions for resolving the problem. Event notification messages also appear on the System Dashboard. Internet access for guests users and Web based VPN access: Cisco Configuration Assistant s guest port feature allows businesses to easily configure guest access ports on their switch, providing visitors with Internet access and allowing them to establish VPN connectivity to their company resources. Guest port users are separated from internal network traffic so that confidential internal access only information and services remain secure. The SSL VPN feature on the 500 Series Secure Router also allows for clientless, web browser based access to specified applications on the internal network. Network synchronization: This feature detects inconsistent settings in the network, such as VLAN mismatches, incorrect time settings, and problems with security policies. Working with the Troubleshooting Advisor, users can detect and fix these inconsistencies easily. Error notification messages also appear on the System Dashboard. Simplified troubleshooting: Embedded in the application is the Troubleshooting Advisor, which simplifies troubleshooting by automatically identifying potential network problems and documenting them with a graphical trend chart. Examples include cabling problems, configuration errors, and other potential network problems. Users receive an explanation of the issue and can often correct the problem with a simple mouse click. If additional support is required, Cisco Configuration Assistant can consolidate all the system logs required into a single archive with one button press. This archive can be sent to Cisco technical support for troubleshooting. For troubleshooting basic network connectivity, Cisco Configuration Assistant supports common utilities such as ping and traceroute, which can be run from a Cisco SBCS device. For the Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series, Cisco Configuration Assistant also supports voice diagnostics for testing inbound and outbound dial plans, without the need for actually making test calls from an IP phone. For advanced troubleshooting, Cisco Configuration Assistant can enable commonly used Cisco IOS Software debug commands and include the output from these commands in the troubleshooting log, which can be sent to Cisco technical support for further troubleshooting. Comprehensive online support: A detailed, transparent help function embedded in Cisco Configuration Assistant provides an extensive glossary and powerful search engine that help users quickly and easily find the information they need to apply specific settings. With these online help features, users often can troubleshoot and resolve problems without having to call for technical support. Online resources such as Cisco Small Business Support Community can also be accessed directly from the Partners Connection link in Cisco Configuration Assistant. Intelligent port configuration: Cisco Configuration Assistant includes the Cisco Smartports Advisor, which discovers devices connected to the network and recommends appropriate configurations for security, availability, and QoS features on switch ports (Figure 3). This feature saves time by proactively recommending configurations that reflect Cisco best practices, thus helping network administrators avoid the need to consult detailed design guides or documentation. It allows network administrators to configure ports more quickly, eliminates human error, and helps ensure that the configuration of the Cisco SBCS device is optimized for the business s applications. This feature is also supported with Cisco ESW 500 Series Switches Cisco Systems, Inc. All rights reserved. This document is Cisco Public Information. Page 5 of 10

6 Figure 3. Cisco Smartports Advisor Simplified network security settings: Users can centrally configure security and access for Cisco SBCS devices simply by choosing the desired level of security (low, medium, or high) on the security slider in Cisco Configuration Assistant. The low setting (default) provides port security and protection against broadcast storms. The medium setting adds MAC address authentication. The high setting adds IEEE 802.1X authentication for media-level access control, providing the ability to permit or deny network connectivity and control VLAN access based on user or machine identity Cisco Systems, Inc.
