2 NEEDS ASSESSMENT This course is designed to increase the clinical knowledge base of anesthesia, trauma care and perioperative healthcare providers. Course participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment surveys have identified the need for cutting edge information about perioperative healthcare. Topics to be covered include recent advances in anesthesiology and its major subspecialties including ambulatory, pediatric, regional anesthesia, acute pain management and trauma care. Lectures will address the economic impact and cost savings of regional anesthesia, regional anesthesia and perioperative pain management, perioperative hemostasis, updates on trauma resuscitation, and the impact of health care reform on anesthesia practice. This year s conference will specifically address these identified educational needs and provide practitioners with state-of-the-art tools to deliver improved treatment options for their patients. Faculty presenting and interacting with participants at this activity have been selected on the basis of their comprehensive clinical experience and academic excellence. ENROLLMENT Please register early space is limited. Tuition is $595 for physicians and $520 for all others. Confirmation of registration will be sent within two weeks after receipt of enrollment form. The fees will increase after September 9, Tuition includes continental breakfasts, refreshment breaks, electronic syllabus, and a certificate of attendance. Duplicate certificates are $10. Tuition may be paid by check, American Express, Discover, MasterCard or VISA. Cash is not accepted. UC Davis Health System and UC Davis School of Medicine volunteer faculty, alumni, faculty, and staff are eligible for tuition discounts. See enrollment form for details. Refunds must be requested by October 26, 2012 and will be subject to a $75 service charge. Program materials cannot be guaranteed unless enrollment is received by October 29, The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine reserves the right to cancel this program. In such a case, a full refund will be given. Registration forms received without payments will not be processed until payment is received, and payment must follow within 10 days. Early discount rates are honored if payment is received by the date noted on the enrollment form. After that date, the late fee is applied. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the end of the program, participants should be able to: Recognize the areas of perioperative care that can be positively affected by regional anesthesia techniques Develop a strategy to utilize regional anesthesia in your daily practice Identify the techniques suitable for continuous regional anesthesia Recognize the barriers to using perineural catheter techniques List the regional anesthetic techniques appropriate for total knee, total shoulder & total foot arthroplasty Describe the current treatment guidelines for local anesthetic systemic toxicity Discuss the indications for regional anesthetic techniques in the trauma victim Discuss the appropriate use and interpretation of platelet function assays List the many classes of non-opioid analgesic agents Discuss options for regional anesthetic techniques for trauma care Discuss risks and strategies to reduce dangers associated with compartment syndrome, pre-existent nerve damage, and LAST Discuss the mechanisms of antithrombotic therapy Describe the optimal care of the trauma patient who has both a head injury and pelvic fracture TARGET AUDIENCE This activity is designed to educate healthcare professionals caring for patients in the perioperative setting following various surgical procedures. Emphasis will be placed on care of the trauma patient, multimodal anesthesia techniques and regional anesthesia, operating room emergencies, coagulation problems and concerns about the economic issues surrounding the delivery of healthcare in the 21st century. Anesthesiology and pain medicine physicians, nurse anesthetists, nurses, physician assistants, research staff, anesthesiology residents and fellows are encouraged to attend. CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY: A refund of tuition, less $75 administrative fee, will be allowed if requested in writing by October 26, No refunds will be provided after this date. SYLLABUS The electronic syllabus will be available to pre-registered attendees online prior to the meeting for downloading and printing and onsite on a flash drive. 3 ACCREDITATION The University of California, Davis Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CREDIT DESIGNATION Physician Credit: The University of California, Davis Health System designates this live activity for a maximum of 22.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM acceptable for interprofessional team members Nurse: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits (report hours of credit and fill in CME Category 1 for the provider number). Physician Assistant: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) states that AMA PRA Category 1 Credits are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification. ADDITIONAL CREDIT DESIGNATION Nurse Anesthetists: This program has been approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for 21 CE Credits: Code Number ; Expiration Date 11/11/12. CRNA s must pay for and attend all optional sessions to receive 21 CE credits. PAIN MANAGEMENT California Business and Professions Code (Section ) requires physicians and surgeons to complete 12 hours of mandatory continuing education on pain management and the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients. Physicians licensed prior to January 2002 were to have completed this requirement by December 31, Physicians and surgeons licensed on or after January 1, 2002 must complete this requirement within 4 years of their initial license or by their second renewal date, whichever occurs first. CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT All continuing medical education (CME) courses with patient care components are required by California State statute to include curriculum on cultural and linguistic competency in the practice of medicine (California Business and Professions Code, Section ). Those who have developed this UC Davis CME activity have been encouraged to address cultural and linguistic differences for a diverse patient population related to this topic.
