Before spending another dime, healthcare executives should read this book and learn how it s possible to take as 40% of the building cost out before a shovel ever goes in the ground. John Toussaint, MD, CEO, ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value ( taken from the book Lean Led Hospital Design written by Naida Grunden and Charles Hagood/published in 2012) ThedaCare is a community health system consisting of seven hospitals in Northeast Wisconsin and one of the pioneers in the application of Lean thinking in healthcare. Since 2000 ThedaCare has seen quality improve, costs decrease and was just named the health system with the lowest cost and the highest quality of all of the ACO s in the United States. ThedaCare has also applied Lean thinking to the design and build of it s facilities, including a hospital, clinics and now a Cancer Center. To Whom? 3 The presentation of our key speakers: Helen Zak serves as the President and Chief Operating Officer of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value, a not for profit educational institute with a mission to create a healthcare marketplace that rewards providers for delivering value. Helen has 30 years of lean leadership experience in a wide range of industries, including automotive, capital equipment and high tech. Formerly, COO of Lean Enterprise Institute for 11 years, Helen worked with Jim Womack to spread the topic of lean throughout the world and to every industry. Helen has contributed to 16 published works on the topic of lean as well as numerous educational programs and is a frequent speaker on the topic. Helen helped to establish the Lean Education Academic Network, The Lean Global Network and the Healthcare Value Network. Helen is on the Shingo Institute Advisory Committee, New England VERC Advisory Board, Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership Board of Directors and a Steering Committee Member of the Lean Education Academic Network. In addition, Helen is faculty for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and faculty and coach for the Master of Business of Operational Excellence Program at Fisher College of Business at Ohio State. Helen received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University and a MS in Operations Management and MS in Manufacturing Management from Kettering University. 3
4 Albert Park, AIA, EDAC, Vice President Facilities Planning ThedaCare, INC, 1818 North Meade Street, Appleton, WI Albert Park is Vice President of Facilities Planning for ThedaCare, a healthcare system in Northeastern Wisconsin comprised of hospital, clinic, and ancillary services in more than 50 locations, employing more than 6,800 people. These locations include seven hospitals, 34 physician clinics, 3 Ambulatory Care Centers, home health, and senior services. Albert is a licensed architect with twenty- five years of experience in healthcare project development and construction. Current responsibilities include corporate real estate, facilities management, sustainability, and facility design and construction. Significant efforts have focused on lean transformation and its role in facilities management and collaborative facility design and construction. Kurt Spiering PRINCIPAL- IN- CHARGE AIA, ACHA As principal- in- charge of HGA s Healthcare Practice Group, Kurt oversees master planning, programming and the design process. He has been instrumental in reinventing the design process to transform traditional healthcare delivery systems using Lean design to build in flexibility. He applies universal design concepts to complex situations, delivering facilities that are operationally and cost efficient, aesthetically pleasing and designed for the future. A team builder, Kurt steers a collaborative design process that maximizes staff, physician and administrative input. collaborative facility design and construction. 4
5 Paul Reiser has over 30 years industry experience in project management, preconstruction management, construction management, project controls, quality, estimating and executive leadership. Paul is a team builder and process innovator. He is recognized for innovative development and implementation of new project delivery processes with a focus on minimizing waste in the delivery process and maximizing value for the customer. He has been at the forefront of applying Lean principles in project delivery since Paul s career at The Boldt Company began in 1987 in estimating and project management. Today Paul is an Executive Vice President at the Boldt Company and his responsibilities are focused on the operational implementation of innovative project development and construction solutions. In a corporate role Paul has worked to help lead improvement throughout The Boldt Company in the areas of production management, productivity, project scheduling and planning, project financial management, quality assurance, Integrated Project Delivery, and Lean implementation. From 2007 through 2013 Paul served as Project Executive on the $1.2 billion Sutter Health Cathedral Hill Hospital Project and $300 million St. Luke s Hospital Project in San Francisco, CA. Both projects are recognized in the industry as examples of leading edge implementation of Integrated Lean Project Delivery. Paul s leadership on these projects helped project teams improve their performance through deep collaboration and the implementation of integrated Lean processes. Paul is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology. Paul has served on the Board of Directors of the Lean Construction Institute and has been instrumental working with LCI in developing the application of Lean principles and processes in project delivery. 5
